View Full Version : attn: car audio types
what i need in a head unit:
* detachable face
* aux input or adapter for the ability thereof (i understand that the adapter i'd need for most kenwood head units costs around $70)
* ability to play mp3 would be nice
what i don't need in a head unit:
* huge price
* shitty brand
can anyone help me out here?

I just got one of these
http://www.strathfield.com.au/product.asp?ProdID=555
its on layby but I was allowed to check it all out first and it has everything you want, I'm pretty sure.
now the price there is pretty good, but if you go to 'superhceap' auto they have them on special this week for $299, but when they scan it, it shows up as $269
pretty good deal, I'll be picking mine up this weekend.

Sub, Other AMP....blah blah.
I have an independant Sub with it's own AMP.... None of this piss weak 600 watts PMPO.... 600 watts RMS total power Duel Magnet 12" sub. Although it seems to be slightly wasted due to me not listening to anything other than hard rock and metal.
oops, thought it said output

Cray - I know that if the sony ones have a CD stacker input you may be able to use this, they have 2 cables for it, one for power and control, and two RCA inputs i assume that you don't need to plug the control one in and you might be able to run the Ipod from a stereo jack to RCA converter, and just by selecting the CD stacker input should be able to run it that way.
Might need to ask someone at a car audio shop though, just an assumption.

see this is the type of shit i need to know. i've been to 4 different car audio stores in the last few days and spoken to 6 different guys, and they all either seem uninterested in actually helping me or they sound like they just have no idea what the fuck they are talking about.

Yeah i know it sucks, unless your going to buy what they want you to buy, there not really helpful.
"Oh yeah we've got this great deal on these subs, we have them over stocked so we have to sell the dirt cheap"
"I've got subs already im after so and so with this feature"
"Yeah that would go great with these new subs"

I find that a good Jcar manual helps....They dont have big name brand stuff like Clarion, Pioneer or Alpine but they do rate thier speakers in true quality and rating (RMS) I found that most of the stuff there really kicked the ass off of anything Strathfield or other audio places have... Plus they are openly willing to test and give all specs on any speakers/amps/subs they have in stock.

Yes Jaycar are good for speakers, im gonna swap my subs for Jaycar ones simply cause for the price they kick serious ass.
But back on topic now

There you go, this is in USD but for $170 it shouldn't break the bank, has Auxillary input in the rear of the head unit, can be used to hook up MP3 Players and stuff.
Buying car audio stuff from America is the way to go, even though you might get a fair whack of import tax if you bring a lot of stuff over, it still works out cheaper. In my brothers car he has these alpine speakers that are still $1200 bucks a pair over here, in the USA he could have gotten them for around $300 AUD.

Alpine has released an interface for their AINet infrastructure that lets you plug the iPod into the controller unit. I am so very, very tempted.....
Probably well outside of your price range, but having tried to use my iPod with a tape adapter (and aux in) I'd be far happier with a solution where I can navigate / control my audio collection from the head unit's controls, as well as not dicking about with cables everywhere.

Nice to see Apple, being the OEM snobs that they are, not supporting the aftermarket.
First seamless integration of iPod and automobile, huh? What about Alpine's (http://www.alpine.com.au/) addition (http://www.alpine-usa.com/company_info/press_release/010804_ipad.html) to their AI-Net system bus?
With a simple one-cable connection, iPod users will be able to operate key playback features from the Alpine receiver's buttons and have display of playlists, album, artist and songs on the head unit. The iPod can then be safely stored in the glove box or console because it acts like a portable hard drive connected to the head unit through Alpine's powerful Ai-Net system bus.
Alpine has engineered a unique interface box that takes advantage of the iPod Accessory Protocol allowing audio, track information, and control signals to be communicated over the Ai-NET system bus to the in-dash receiver. This seamless integration provides emulation of the iPod's controls through an Alpine head unit using both the front panel buttons and the wireless remote control.
