It is a truism that the older you get, the more of your hero's die. I thought a thread to notify us of the deaths of people we admired is a good idea..so here it is.
To start it off, the death of Kiki Djan, keyboard player with one of my favourite '70's bands, Osibisa: A tragic death
"Ghana's music fraternity is in a state of mourning after the death of one of the country's biggest stars.
Kiki had wasted away after years of drug abuse
Keyboard player Kiki Djan, 47, was found dead in a toilet inside a church, with the equivalent of 70 US cents in his pocket.
For a man who made more than $1m before the age of 18, had hung out with Elton John and Mick Jagger, played for Britain's queen and cruised on champagne-drenched luxury ocean-liners to island-hop in the Caribbean, it was a particularly ignominious way to cross life's finish line.
Kiki died of Aids and drugs-related complications.
"Right now, I'm sad. Very sad," said Mac Tontoh, trumpeter and joint-leader of Osibisa, the erstwhile London-based Afro-rock group with whom Kiki first found fame in the early 1970s.
"I'm sad, not because Kiki's dead - he was suffering too much; I saw him every day. I'm sad because he should've died with dignity."

My parents have got an Osibisa album. Has that song "There's an awful lot of coffee in Brazil". Still rates as one of my favorite songs from my youth

As no-one else seems to be bothered, I think I will fill this with my dead heroes! Played guitar on some of the coolest records ever made. And as an original member of the Voidoids all you punks out there should be in mourning; in fact anyone with taste should be..it's not everyone who plays with people as diverse as Tom Waits, Marrianne Faithful and Brian Eno:
Robert Quine
The relentless, agitated, angular guitar-playing of the rock guitarist Robert Quine, who has been found dead in his Manhattan home aged 61, was both highly original and influential. While Quine never enjoyed great commercial success, his ability to mix dissonance with melody made him the guitarist of choice for singers as different as Richard Hell and Marianne Faithful.

Old news - was posted here (http://www.kleph.com/blog/archives/2004_06_01_index.html) almost a month ago (scroll down to his entry for June 8) ... and while you're there, donate a bit of cash to the guy - you know it makes sense!

So who the fuck is this "kleph" person anyways and why wasn't I advised that I should have read something on his website almost a month ago?
If you don't know who kleph is, then you can't have been at ZGeek very long...

Shit! Last time I looked (OK, a coupla months ago) he sounded as if he was doing OK! Hope he hasn't been at the old Peruvian marching powder ;) .
As I am on benefits at the mo' I probably get less than him BUT having been stuck, skint in foreign countries myself I will try and do something, I know it feels very isolating to say the least.
And Tikdoph...look at Klephs - 100 top albums here. (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5970)
I may not agree with all choices but it is a well written, eclectic and challenging thread. Was one of the first threads I followed whilst lurking for a while at first :D
And it has turned me on to a LOT of good music and reminded me of much more I had forgotten (Husker Du etc).
Could be a bit of lamer sometimes but meh so what!
As soc said, give the man some fucking money! NOW:grr:

I've posted a little news item about kleph on the front page (with his permission, of course) ... I agree with you about his top 100 albums list - I don't agree with ALL his choices, but, as I learned when visiting him last year, the man sure knows his music!

= Footinmouth syndrome. This is not to be confused with the similar, more severe and often mistaken syndrome: Headupownarse.
I hugged a tree on my way in to work this morning, and it made me feel all warm and squishy inside ... :D

Getting this thread back on topic ... there was a rumour going around this morning that Marlon Brando had died ... turned out to be untrue, but he's still really, REALLY fat.:p

BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER! We heard the rumour this morning at work (Evening Standard) but couldn't get confirmation so it didn't make the paper ... *sigh* ... suppose I'd better go and make a front-page post then... the poor, fat old (dead) bastard :(

don't mean to bring the thread down & shit, but the obituary thread is a pertinent place for the 9.5th year of my best friend David's death (falling off the edge off a cliff if you must know)
back to the program, who wants pie?

As good a use as anything else...it was for people to post obituaries of others, whoever they may be.
But, 1 rule I didn't add; It would be nice if it was an obituary rather than just so&so died sometime..
Steak and Kidney, please

I dunno, the thing I remember about the times were obscure cultural references, helping and watching him learn about tech stuff, an adventurous spirit, curious and bombastic, always pushing the envelope. Best Friend is not a term I would ever use lightly, but he was and always will be, despite any faults (didn't speak to his father from the around 14; died right on 19); he had the spirit of independence and all the trappings to make it work, until the end.
I still don't know what happened on that cliff, I know he would have come up with something better if he topped himself; sometimes I still think he tried to climb down and went too far (prone to that before)... the only report isa fisherman who heard a yell as David fell.

"Campaigning journalist Paul Foot has died aged 66.
The former Private Eye, Daily Mirror and Guardian journalist was known for his left-wing politics and campaigns against miscarriages of justice.
"He was a one-off, and we'll miss him terribly," said Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger.
Mr Foot, the nephew of former Labour leader Michael Foot, is understood to have died of a heart attack, said Private Eye editor Ian Hislop."

The great steeplejack, engineer, steam-engine man, television presenter and all round good bloke Fred Dibnah has fallen off this mortal coil. He'd just finished an interesting series on the UK's Industrial Heritage, but I guess, on the bright side, we will have a fair few repeats of his different series. I don't know if he is known in Australia but he will be missed here.
"TV steeplejack Fred Dibnah, 66, has lost his three-year fight against cancer only weeks after filming his final television series.
Bolton-born Mr Dibnah, who became an unlikely celebrity, spurned treatment to tour the UK on a traction engine as part of a 12-part BBC Two series.
Mr Dibnah cancelled all engagements in September after he was taken ill during filming Made In Britain.
He died on Saturday surrounded by friends and family at Bolton Hospice.
Mr Dibnah's television career took off in his early 40s when he starred in the BBC TV documentary Fred Dibnah Steeplejack"

Former England and Liverpool captain Emlyn Hughes has died from a brain tumour at the age of 57.
Hughes earned 62 caps for the national team and led Liverpool to a string of honours while at the Anfield club.
He helped the club to four league titles, two European Cups, an FA Cup victory and two Uefa Cup titles.
Hughes was the first player to lift the European Cup for Liverpool after the victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach in 1977. "
