dunno if it was the same guy but in the 19th century some railway construction worker got a 22 inch railway spike thru his frontal lobe, changed his personality a bit after that. (he survived and is now a psychological textbook case)

It depends on what you define as "worse" sure having a pole in your head is gruesome but large portions of the human brain are back-up or perform non-essential functions, it's not extremely hard to miss anything vital, same goes for impalement of the torso, if all the vital organs are missed then things are looking not so bad for you.

However if something weighing upwards of 900kg(1980lbs) comes down on you at a great speed & comes to rest completely on top of you there really is very very little chance that something vital isn't going to be squashed to a pulp.
