Ok, I get the basic idea of how a Bittorrent works, but what I want to know is how do I get in on it? I went to Bittorrent.com or whatever that one'scalled and got their program, but it didn't install any usable applications... also, how do I get the suprnova website to work? any time i click on something there i just get taken to a blank page...

EDIT:
Yeah so I just found the other thread... neeevermind

try here (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/doc/Azureus%20User%20Guide.htm) or here (http://btfaq.com/serve/cache/1.html) for faq's.
are you sure you downloaded and installed it right? try azureus (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=84122) or the original bittorrent (http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html)
make sure your web browser is set to open .torrent files with whatever program you've downloaded.

Okay...

Firstly, you need to download a Bittorrent client, which you've already done. Then you need to go to Suprnova, right-click on the file you want to download, and click "save-target as".

A small (below 500k/b) *.torrent file should then be saved to your computer. Simply run that file, it should automatically open up your bittorrent client and ask you where to save the complete download. Select a location and then just sit back and watch the download fly!

mmhmm... and about suprnova not showing me anything?

it's suprnova.org right?

yep. http://www.suprnova.org/
it works for me, but it was showing nothing before though.
if you sort of know what you want try http://novamesi.com.ar/
its a suprnova mirror, that has stuff sorted into categories, and a better search imho

Yay! I got Azureus working. Who would have know i never had java.

Anyway... does it always go this slow? The first time i ran it mym firewall got angry.. i didn't leave any lasting persmissions on the firewall or anything but it seems to run fine now... but slow. It has alittle yellow face that says I might have a NAT problem. Idon't even know what that is.

More questions... I've heard people talk about having a good ratio... ie uploading as much as they're downloading... aren't you just uploading whatever you're downloading?
how do you change those settings?

Make sure you have tcp ports 6881-6889 and 6969 open also.

Ah ok. How would I do that?

Canalien, If you have an adsl router which handles all the adsl logins and assigns you a lan ip address (192.168.* 10.*) then you have to either turn on Upnp on your router, Azureus handles upnp fine. Or configure your router to PORT FORWARD those listed ports to the ip of your computer, otherwise other bittorrent clients can't connect to you, you can't upload, and hence get a shithouse download speed.

As to the specifics of how to do these things with your modem, It changes from modem to modem.

If you are running a straight adsl modem, and your computer is handling authentication, then it should be forwarding all ports to you anyway so you don't need to bother.

:/

This is poo. These torrent thingys are only downloading at like 10kB/s

What am i doing wrong? How do I open those ports? I want that yellow face to go away.

You'll need to login to the admin feature of your router (most these days are web-based) hate to say this mate, but RTFM and you'll find out how to do this.

or, go to the manufactures website.

or, google for it using the google groups search.

good luck!

It's a Billion ADSL Router (BIPAC-5100)

So I'm not as stupid as I thought.. maybe.
I went to the admin configuration and enabled UPnP, then ran Azureus... i got all these warning messages saying 'UPnP: Mapping Tracker Port (TCP/6969) failed' and similar ones. So I went back to admin and enabled users to make configuration changes through upnp, and then ran azureus. and it informed me the upnp mapping ports had been established...

but it still goes real slow.. 12kB/s tops

azureus also has a nice tutorial on nat as well over here (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/PortForwarding)
if your torrents have green smileys then theres not much you can do, there probably arent enough people seeding stuff to max out your bandwidth.
they do ramp up a bit over time though. ie start real slow then slowly get faster to max out bandwidth.
you should limit your uploads to about 80 - 90 % of your maximum uploads as well. see here (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/faq.php#10). i limit mine to about 50-60% so i can still browse the web as well.

Good thread. I too had trouble with port forwarding on my router.
This site has an extensive list of makes and models and explains how to port forward for each one if anybody else is having trouble.
