Stuff I wanna know:

I need to restrict the number of characters [eg,. 100] on the dir structure on windows 2003server.

In essence I am having problems that when a dir structure / unc path contains more than xxx characters the files can become inaccesable/unstable to access.

Nothing that I have looked at on MSDN etc seems to point me in a right direction. I was wondering if there is a reghack that would limit this, there seems to be no option of locking down the file structure in this way that is native in the least.

Any help welcomed, please no smart arse comments like 'use a real operating system' 'linux would handle this' etc,. Its a network that I work on, I dont own it!!

Thanks in advance.

edit
hmmmm thinking: I'm not sure if this affects all programs accessing files. Could be a client/application issue.
Will investigate and find out more.

I very much doubt this is possible, and why should it be?

Find the moron who wrote the software that breaks when you hit 100 characters in the path, and break their kneecaps.

The maximum number of characters in an NTFS file path is 255, including \\server if it's a UNC path. If you get some that go just over you can map a drive further down the directory tree to cut a few of the characters out.

The only way to save yourself a headache is user education, tell the fuckers to stop being 'tards or else you'll install windows 3.11 and they'll be stuck with 8.3 filenames.

haha!!!! I like that one, placing threats on users is fun. Unfortunately the 'tard is a DBA.

Might change his password for a laugh, make the password 255 characters long.

Because I can. See how the fucker likes that.
