As much as the hype that permeates the Olympics annoys me, I still find myself irresistibly drawn into watching as much of the coverage as I can.

To kick off this thread, I thought we could make early predicitons on which sport or athlete might deliver Australia a "bolt outta the blue" medal.

By this I mean not the usual swimming/cycling/rowing certainties, but the more obscure sports or athletes that aren't already media saturated (I'm looking at you Mr Thorpe & Ms Pitman). Something like when Michael Diamond got his first medal, or Simon Fairweather pulled archery gold out of his arse.

My early tip is that Australia could figure in the podium finishes for boxing. What do the rest of youse reckon?

I got home and turned on the TV and thought it was strange that JOhn Farnham where singing at the Greek Opening Ceremony.... then I looked in the guide and realised they were replaying the sydney one.

The greek one doesnt seem to shabby though, nice background music thanks to tiesto :D

Nah i reckon that polish dude will get it.

"The unquestionable hero of the Polish team was Robert Korzeniowski. Korzeniowski won two gold medals - in 20 and 50 km walk in Atlanta and Sydney"

Hopefully camel toes don't spit.

I thought the whole Greek Opening Ceremony was unreal. It shat all over the Sydney one, but I suppose it helps that they actually have thousands of years of history to celebrate whereas we have like 200 and have to fill time showing the world what flowers and crap we have. But the production values in that ceremony were just spectacular.

I thought they should have used my idea, though, being the Opening Ceremony, have someone come out at the start and say 'Welcome to the OC, bitch'.

All I know is I am drawn to the asses on those girls during the beach volleyball. I watched like five games of it. Would have sprouted a woody but my gf was there. My god those bodies.

Here is a quick URL to keep up on the medal Count:

Awesome swim from Thorpie :fag: to win the 200 free tonight, nice to see all the "experts" who criticised his choices re training, coach, etc get their comeuppance.

But it's the girls mainly showing how to keep the gold medal counter ticking over. Petria Thomas in the pool (solo & with the other relay girls), Suzy Balogh in the trap shooting, Sara Carrigan (who absolutely crushed that German lesbo with the timing of her finishing sprint) in the cycling.....keep 'em coming ladies.

That's not a good place to reference the overall medal tally. It lists the countries by how many medals won as a total, not by how many gold each country has won like every other source.

LOL, most people would lose that bet. China has an unfair advantage of a billion or more people than the States. :D

Ya I realize that now. Drinking beer at the time and not thinking clearly. Damm the games were great last night. Swimming and the Gymnastics were fantastic. Shit even though I new the outcome from the news I was on the edge of screaming half the time. Now today we are in for a little Beach Volleyball mmmm love those shorts and White Water Rapids (I think) Dammit I will not be able to watch that since I am working......

Back to work. Dammit I could take two weeks off and watch this stuff...

I was watching volleyball and basketball last night and saw two of the greatest sporting names EVER!

On the Aussie volleyball team, there was a guy called Van Beest. Gold!

On the US basketball team, there was a guy called Boozer. Double Gold!!

What is everyone's take on Sally Robbins' effort (or lack there of) in the rowing?

Pretty piss poor effort if you ask me. Compared to the women in the marathon, who were collapsing and puking their guts up at the finish line, it was a pretty weak display from a supposed elite athlete. Only makes it worse that it was in a team event.

Reading (http://www.rowingaustralia.com.au/athletes.asp?cmd=Details&ID=76) her profile on the Rowing Australia web site, I was suprised to see her personal motto is "Never surrender the dream"!!

Yeah what's the deal with all of the current affairs programs taking her side? Going on past stories I'd've expected them to, at worst, lynch her as she got off the boat.

edit: I'm pissed at what she did.

Proud to say that two residents of my state will be participating in Wednesday's events.

Barb Lindquist in the women's triathalon. She lives right here in Teton County! (but trains in Australia during our winter cause its so damn cold here) She is favored to win a medal. Go Barb!

Rulon Garder in Men's Grecko-Roman wrestling at 120kg (Jeebus, thats a big dude!). He is also favored to win a medal. He was a gold medalist at the 2000 games in Sydney. Go Rulon!

RE: Spurr's post about Sally Robbins....

Hmmm, I'm undecided. I think she is fucked for not finishing the race and I think that her teammates should maybe have considered her welfare a little bit more.

As she was part of a team, Sally should have been able to let someone know that she was not well. Then they could have either eased off or taken the appropriate measures to keep the boat going forward. To let her oar dip in the water and fuck up the boat is pretty average and inexcusable. She knows better than that.

Her teammates were understandably upset about the incident but they did not have to say the things they did to the media. That stuff is for team meetings and the pub after the game.

Overall, she fucked up bad but the lack of communication on the boat was the worst thing. Now they should start getting over it.

I have a feeling that Sally will be shouting beers for a long time to come to make up for this....

Just watched the mens 200m final and it's pretty disappointing. The crowd has held the race up for ages and a runner has made them reset the race after complaining that he couldn't hear the gun. They also had a false start.

Another thing is that whenever one of the merkins has come on screen they have booed, even when one of the blokes, Williams, does nothing but smile. This isn't a one off either, not something to be proud of I reckon.

Australia just made the mens 4x100m final (made 6th) for the first time since the Melbourne games. :greenman:

We also just won gold in mens hockey for the first time ever and also qualified for the mens 4x400m relay (2nd in final).

What a night.

edit: Added where the relay's placed.
