first of all I would like say how nice the site looks, i like the way the forums now use 100% of the screen in tables.

anywho, ive had the chance to play with longhorn build 4074, and so far I think 'meh', I know its in development still and its full of bugs(yadda yadda beta), but I had a quick play just to see, yeah it looks nice but so far its just XP with some new styling (imho)

any body else had the chance of 'playing' with it, if so, what do ya's think?

I might buy it when it is released though, just mainly so's I can learn about it before everybody starts asking "how do you...."

Most of the buzz around Longhorn ATM is in the backend technologies that Microsoft is going to be pushing on developers; see http://msdn.microsoft.com/longhorn/

To me, lots of it looks like Microsoft playing the same old API games, but I've not yet really played with any of it.

well from what ive heard through the grape vine is that they are trying to make such a drastic change like they did with 3.11 to 95.

Although something needs to be done to make peaple want to upgrade, other than the fact that it is new, is the average joe who uses their machine for sending an email and using ebay going to notice any difference, i think not, that can be done great in WIN98, I think they are mainly going to be pushing & marketing this at IT professionals, but then we have 2003 for this - which was basically promised infinitly better than 2000 but I still know of some companies still using NT4, old software but it works them. I really do beg to ask why?

And the fact that most of the software will not work in longhorn due to the fact microsoft are changing its file system, earlier I tried to insert the disc for my Canon i250 but it says this disc is not supported in this version of windows, also my USB is not supported so it didnt really matter that the printer didn't install, but still.

I admire MS for what they are doing, pushing technology further, but can't they do something else with that wealth & power, I know billy boy is getting into the spam market as he will generate a lot of money if they make a successfull piece of software, but maybe we should stick with XP and just keep releasing patches until its full proof? but will anything be full proof?

It will come down to claims that:

"You can employ half as many developers who only have to be half as smart as before, and pay them half as much for only half as long, to develop your shitty internal corporate apps."

I have heard tha the more interesting features of longhorn (the whole 3d desktop, which requires a video card to use,:ghost: and all that) aren't going to be public until it's almost released. I can't wait for it.

... but will anything be full proof?I can garantee you that nothing is fool proof. Ever. :borg:

Time to get back on topic kids. If you have something to say or comment about Longhorn you are free to do so but leave the jokes out.

Personally I think that a revolution in ease of use will follow if they can populate WinFS with useful metadata without the user having to fill forms for each file.

Longhorn does not use a new file system (it still uses NTFS), and it does not have a 3D desktop (it just uses your graphics card to process some of the GUI).

when the final release comes out it will be using a file system callled WINFS, I don't know about the 3d desktop, and at the moment all the builds of codename longhorn yes are using the NTFS files system.

Nope, it will use a fileING system called WinFS.

WinFS is more of a database than an actual file system and it will run on NTFS. To me it looks like an integrated SQL Server which they seem to be pushing to many places now (new Exchange server for instance).

petty

Not really petty, major difference between the two. Although it's typical Micro$oft rebranding.
