Does hiking or mountain climbing or backpacking count as sports?
I can't recall seeing any competitive hiking on espn nor could I imagine Dodge or Budweiser sponsoring hiking.
All that aside, I decided this was the most appropriate forum to post this to.
A couple of weeks ago I trekked into the heart of the Gros Ventre (pronounced 'grow vaunt', it's french for 'big belly', descriptive of the native tribes encountered here) Wilderness in northwestern Wyoming. It was a 22 mile (35.4km) backpack trip consisting of 3 days/2 nights. The starting point was about 7 miles from my house at the Goodwin Lake trailhead and I ended at a place called Granite Hot Springs.
I left work at 4 P.M. on friday and drove to the trailhead. I put on my pack and hiked the first 4 miles (6.4km)to Goodwin Lake. I gained 1000 feet (305m) to Goodwin Lake where I set up camp for the night. These pictures are from an earlier outting to Goodwin Lake.http://gallery.zgeek.com/albums/uploads/goodwin_lake.thumb.jpg (http://gallery.zgeek.com/uploads/goodwin_lake)

The following day, I slept in since I didn't have many miles to cover and had the whole day to do it. The destination was Turquoise Lake, another alpine lake at an elevation of 9500 feet (2896m). The hike was 6 miles (9.6km) and I gained and subsequently lost another 1000 feet (305m) vertical. The high point is a place called Cache Creek Pass. The view of the Teton range is breathtaking from any vantage point and this is no exception.

From here, it was another 2.2 miles (3.5km) to Turquoise Lake. Here are some shots of the lake:

The next morning I had to get an early start. My wife and children were to meet me at Granite Hot Springs at noon for a picnic lunch and swimming. I woke at what I believe is 6 A.M. (forgot my watch, DOH!) packed everything and hauled ass for the remaining 12 miles (19.3km). It was a beautiful hike through brightly colored alpine meadows. In places, the wildflowers towered above my head. It was early, so the pictures that I took were in low light and fail to do justice to the scene.
I over estimated how much ground I could cover so I showed up late but all was well. The trip ended just as I had planned. Soaking in a hot spring pool and basking in the glow of nature's beauty.
Any other Zgeeks into hiking/backpacking? Wanna share stories?
