I want to network my computer with my brothers computer in order to share the cable internet. However the distance between the computers makes it too difficult for cables, b/c its on a different level of the house at the other end.
Are there any good wireless networking solutions that would be good for this? what would i actually need to get and use so this would work well?

You could use the Linksys WRT54G, it has support for telstra heartbeat, if your computer is near the modem, just plug yourself into the 4 port switch it has and then get a 802.11b/g card for your brother and he will be able to connect to the router through its wireless conection

Yep, I just bought a dlink wireless access point... It has support for cable modems going by the diagram on the box. I'll be plugging it into my pc and sharing the net that way, as I don't have broadband... *grumble*

I've got 3 computers sharing a broadband conection.
I used
1 network card for the computer with the router.
1 router
2 access points.
It goes from under the garage at the back of the house all the way to the front of the house. But my signal drops out and gets very weak from time to time on the computer further away. I'm using 802.11b but don't know if the g series give of a stonger signal.

Finally set that wireless AP up the other night. Easy as piss. All you need is a wireless networking on your PCs and a network card to do the setup. Now I've got a home network and can surf the net from anywhere in my house.

I have a netgear WGT624 v2 at home, piece of piss to set up and I've had it for approx 5 months and havn't had any problems... compared to some dlink ones I've come into contact with at work (connection dropouts occuring all to often).

However, when I first bought it, I performed a firmware upgrade and killed it, quite pissed off. Netgear replaced it and I haven't even thought of trying to upgrade the firmware again.

The WRT54G got some good reviews when I was looking for one. I bought it and it has served me well so far. As with anything shop around – when I was getting one they were going for 180 bucks... I picked it up for 154.

you may be able to find a wrt54g cheap, now that they've release a 104mb version, the wrt54gs.

I installed a pci wireless card in my pc last night and couldn't get it to work. Had a look at the doco today, have to install the drivers first...

I have a router connected to my cable internet. I connect to the router via wireless connection. I dont have too many problems with it, although the connection is a bit tempremental sometimes. I find that if i reset the router, all my problems seem to disappear.

BTW using netgear g

just make sure you use the encryption on the router, i just moved to a new block of units and had to wait for my ADSL to get relocated. i turned on the wireless and picked up 3 other users in the same block who had not set this up on the router. at least it gave me net access until Telstra fixed mine up.

anyone got cordless phone within 100 meters of ya wireless connection. some of those 2.4ghz handsets are right bastards for screwing up the wireless connection, swamp the band with a wide spectrum signal type thing. set one up the other day and the thing used to fall over everytime they got a phone call. Eventually moved the base station to a part of the house further away and this eased the problems a little.

Got a question myself, thought I'd put it in here - I've just bought a netgear router, and i'm networking three computers. I've connected it as the book told me to, etc, however, it's not connecting to the internet. Anyone know how to fix?
