So the most useless stupid program Microsoft could have ever included in windows (seriously, what's the fuckin point of it...) ran itself this morning and my gf decided to run it on her XP profile... now seeing as she never uses the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, but the quicklaunch one instead, she decided to delete it with the wizard (it turns out she didn't know you could just disable it in desktop settings)... now of course XP in all it's retarded majesty deleted it from MY profile too...
no worries, i'll just retrieve it from the Unused Desktop Shortcuts folder says I... except that she deleted that too. whoops.

so now it's gone and i can't retrieve it... ok says I, i'll just go to desktop settings and enable it again.. oh, it IS enabled apparently.. but it's not there. it's baleeted. I googled and can't find any answers... anyone have any idea how to get it back?

btw... I mean the original 'not a shortcut' one... i fear change. things must remain as they are. this bothers me.

It was MSIE. I think it's a sign from the computer gods to switch to Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/) or Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/).

Now that I've got the formalities out of the way, perhaps the "Deleted desktop items" directory has been restored. If not, recreate it manually, then try the "Yes, show MSIE on my desktop" function again.

Edit: Oh, apparently my "URL" tags have to be in uppercase. Why can't we just use regular HTML tags like <a> and <q>?

Try Link (http://www.theeldergeek.com/hide_internet_explorer_desktop_icon.htm)
The closest thing is to reinstall it here is a KB artical that explains how to reinstall KB318378 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378)

I will keep looking though

Moral to the story: Dont let your girl near your computer!

I think i have a solution for you.
Created a new user on the machine, this means you will have to set up all your programs again e.g. intenet, email as it is profile based setting

Tried your idea Drinking Duck, thought you might be onto something good there... unfrotunately though, even with new profiles the XP is now incapable of showing IE embedded on the desktop...

Thinking maybe a backup and format on the weekend... maybe then I can finally rename H:\ to C:\

My solution:

Remove your girl's administrator rights and then configure the security policy properly :)

When you delete the IE icon from your desktop, the registry entry for the NameSpace is deleted. Use Regedt32 to select:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\ NameSpace

On the Edit menu, choose Add Key. Enter a Key Name of {FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8} and leave the Class blank.

Select the {FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8} key. On the Edit menu, choose Add Value. Leave the Value Name blank and the Data Type as REG_SZ. Click OK. Enter a string value of The Internet.

Exit the registry editor, shutdown and restart your computer.

If the IE icon does not appear on your desktop, use Explorer / Tools / Find / Files and Folders to locate Iexplore.exe. Use the right mouse button to drag Iexplore.exe from the Find window to your desktop, clicking Create Shortcut(s) Here. This icon may have standard shortcut properties. Use Control Panel / Internet to set IE properties.

[edit]Just realised, that's 98? tip. Hope it's some good.
