Ok so i wanna chip my ps2 ..
i have a couple of options and need ideas etc as to what people think/who people know etc

I was looking at this (http://www.modchipshop.com/ps2/v56pnporder.htm) just before and it doesnt need any soldering you just open the ps2 and just connect some ribbons n stuff EASY! But theres a catch and you need a 'swap magic disc' for the no solder chip .. so therefore it will cost more..

My other option...
Blueboy is gonna give me a chip which he apparently has (Im hoping this isnt going to turn into something all kinky like) and all i have to do is find someone to chip it for me..since theres like soldering and stuff involved and i dont wanna touch it in fear i will kill my poor ps2!

Does anyone know of anywhere cheap and local (I live in wollongong but will go sydney if need be) that i can get this done??

Any information will be appreciated!!! :tits:

I live in wollongong and can solder pretty good (computer/electronic engineer) but i dont like playing with other peoples stuff. You could try going down to an engineering workshop (electical one) and seeing if they would be willing to do it for you.

Theres a couple of places in Sydney that do it but they are dodgy as fuck (ask anyone who had to endure my massive whinges after I got my first machine done in sydney and it was like VHS piracy "wasn't quite right"). Alternatively I know a top bloke here in Newcastle that did my new machines and a heap of mates who really does a spiffy job and offers after mod support. Pricey but does the best job I've ever seen (doesnt leave wires and chip laying all over PS2 mainboard, tidies that shit up for better reliability).

I advise against getting a chip yourself THEN trying to find someone to do it. The chip could be incompatible with your machine and really do some harm if you tried to install it yourself. And even if you took it to a modder, they'd charge you near of the same amount as getting it through them because it's the actual installation process that makes it expensive to do opposed to say modding an XBox. Go the safe route and take your fresh machine to a modding guy and say "do it, punk". Also if your current PS2 is pretty old, like more than a year, I suggest getting a brand new machine or trading your old one in for new as it will last longer with new parts than some old arse, dust filled piece of shit.

Anyways if you want it done Shez come have a yarn with this ol' dirty bastard and we'll work something out. Plus this way you'll have some new software to try out on your lovely new modded machine. Damn DDR gayfags.

Man, look at all that shit up there......

It still echoes in my ears.

I would agree with what Blunt said though - a better idea to get chip and modding from the same place, slightly more chance of it all being compatible that way (though it's all a bit dodgy of course). I will ask DumHed, though I think he knows more about xbox modding than ps2.

Was that when you got it done and Initial D was being all screwy??

And yeh my machine is older than a year!
I was just hoping i wouldnt have to go to the extra expense of selling this machine and buying a new one.
Thanks for your help though blunt! :tits:

Anyone else with any other options??

If your machine was made in the first year the ps2 came out then you will have to replace the laser aswell because it won't read any copied games.

You can ask these guys in Parra. I haven't used them myself, and actually am looking to get mine done as well. I heard these guys where good from a few friends and sources, but I don't have the cash to spare at the moment. You also might want to check out which chip you want.

Coupla tips: buy the chip from the guy who mods it, or you won't get any warranty at all. Any problems will be blamed on the chip, not the work. For anybody who hasn't got an xbox or ps2 already and wants one modded, buy the box from the modder directly - that way you get an even higher chance of it being supported by them if it dies.

Overall, the mod shouldn't cost you more than a game would. That's a pretty easy thing to justify the expense for, isn't it...

I have a guy in Melbourne who does PS2 and XBox mods really well. I've bought a couple of boxes from him so far, and I made sure to watch him work the first time (to be sure he wasn't just a hack with a soldering iron). The majority of guys doing this are dodgy, so trust your instincts. Ask LOTS of questions, expect straight answers. There are plenty of people who will do the work, so you can afford to be fussy - remember that if they screw it up, you could have a dead PS2 on your hands that can't be fixed (odds are the police won't help you if the modder just tells you to sod off, and legal costs far outweigh the value of a new box, something the modders rely heavily on).

One last tip - research the various mods that exist, and choose the one you go with carefully. I'm not 100% familiar with PS2 mods, but in the XBox world there are half a dozen major mod chips each with different quirks, features and options. Usually the cheaper the mod, the less functionality it will have. For some people this is fine, but for me I found it restrictive. A good example of this is the mod in my box vs the mod in my brothers. Mine has an FTP daemon built into the chip, so if I kill my hard disk or want to rebuild the XBox I can do it without burning a boot CD or anything. His doesn't do any of this, and is a lot more tedious to update the BIOS on. Mine cost about $120 installed, his was $70. But the time I save with mine when I want to do fancy things justified the extra $50 (which is half a game in real terms).

Found out today that because of the impending release of the PStwo around the 28th of October (same time as GTA:SA), Sony is selling off the last of it's PS2 5000 models (both black and the new silver) during the next couple of weeks and is going to discontinue them permanetly. This concerns people who are still sitting on the fence on whether to get a modded Playstation 2 as the new machine will probably be harder to mod, even less people will be able to do it (depends on if modders could even be arsed anymore as the PS2 was already a headache to chip), and the biggest concern is that the new PStwo does not have a slot for, nor supports the HDD, so people wanting to use HD Loader (basically a program that lets you whack a whopping great HDD into your PS2 and chuck games on it) are also up shitcreek.

People that already have modded PS2's and are not using the HD Loader method but want to I suggest you pick up the required Network Adapter as these too are being phased out (not right away but gradually) as the networking capabilities are inbuilt in the PStwo. So basically get off your fucken arses and mod now people, lest you be in for a wait until the PStwo is cracked.

Cockbites.

No network and no hard drives makes XBox look pretty attractive compared to the antique PS2 platform. hehehe. (I have both, and think the PS2 is just a little dated now)

I can definately recommend, buying a network adapter, a 120gb hard disk and a copy of HDLoader or HDAdvance - allows you to copy and run all your (and any you borrow from someone else) games from hard disk. Works well.
