Where do you go to meet people?

So I seem to have been copping flack lately for the fact that I have met a fair number of my GFs at clubs. The thing is most of those girls have been at least half crazy, so I'm wondering where to go to meet a girl/woman who is if not sane, at least logical in a way that i can understand.
So where do the rest of you go to meet people of the opposite sex? Which places have produced the best results?

Seriously though, I'm too shy to simply go up to someone and start talking to them... so I meet people off the net after having talked to them for some time... sure, it can be a gamble, but it's the nerd's way :)

If your profile is acurate "Kendo. Fencing. Swimming. Kung Fu" These activities should give you plenty of oportunity to meet people. If you are that active, join some sort of sports club, or afternoon sports comp. There are plenty of mixed gender sports to play in most areas, unless you are from tasmania, then all you can really do is chase your sister around the block a few times.

I don't really meet many people swimming as i tend to swim laps pretty non-stop and intensively.
kendo, kung fu and fencing are all sports that i've enjoyed, but my current job is keeping me too busy to do more than swim in the morning. Through all of these sports i don't think i've met many females. Anyone know of a good mixed soccer group? that'd be cool

Community billboards usually have details for sports like soccer and touch footy. Even the community newspapers have locations/results/news about the latest rounds. Is there a Gym in your area? They would know or have people that would know, ie, fit active people.

Seriously tho, conferences are good; that way you can burl up to people you don't know and chat without being branded some sort of weirdo. Where I used to work, there were informal "Who can get her first" competitions, as females were a rarity. Not only did I win hands down most times, I usually won by luring them into my web of deciept, rather than chasing after them, chloroform in one hand, club in the other.

...I think I need to start being a bit more pro-active in my (thus far unproductive) search for a lady friend... all my friends are getting married, and I still have as much experience with the opposite sex as I did in High-school.
