'Storm Boy' author Thiele dies

Renowned children's author Colin Thiele has died aged 85.

Thiele, who was best known for the book Storm Boy, died from heart failure at a Brisbane Hospital.

He was born at Eudunda in South Australia.

He was educated at several country schools before studying at the University of Adelaide.

He served with the RAAF during World War II and later taught in high schools and colleges.

Thiele's biographer Stephanie Steggall says he showed writing skills at an early age.

"He'd shown considerable promise, even at school, and it was unusual in those days for a young man from the country to go to university," she said

"I think meeting there with a number of other young aspiring poets probably set him on the path to writing as a more full-time career."

Close friend Max Fatchen says he helped to develop children's literature.

"He is one of the great stars of Australia's literary firmament," he said.

"He's one of the greatest friends children had ever had."

Thiele published almost 80 books.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters and seven grandchildren.

I'm sad to see him go. He died on the same day as Steve Irwin - I wonder what the Dead Pool rules would have said if someone actually had Steve Irwin on their list. Would we both have won? I guess it's a bit academic really. May he rest in peace.

I would like to fill the void that Colin Thiele's death has created in my Dead Pool list with another great author: Kurt Vonnegut. At least this way, when he does pass on I will have some small consolation.
