NFI what this should go into

but why the hell did the avatar sizes get reduced to 50x50? I thought the 64x64 was too small already, 50x50 is just irritating. Can we get it changed back?

I think your internet is broken.

Cray also mentioned that the limit was shrunk down to 50x50 but I changed mine a day or so ago at 64x64 with no problems.

Edit: And lets get it pushed up to 100x100 while we're on the topic :p

For a site that's as media and content-laden as ZGeek is, I believe that the Avatar dimension and filesize limit is too strict - HOWEVER:

On other fora you may visit, the rules are less strict, eg. 100x100 max with max 30kB. The difference between those fora and ZGeek is that the latter hosts all the avatars. That is, every time a person makes the request for an avatar, the bandwidth is ZGeek's, not the owner of the avatar. As such, it's perfectly acceptable for Pirate to ask for size limits as he is the one paying for us all to display our pretty e-faces.

What I'd like to happen:

All avatars are hosted offsite, with a limit of 100x100 pixels in dimensions, and 30kB in filesize. Banners no larger than 400x100 px in dimensions and 30kB in filesize are allowed in signatures - also offsite, and the option (as I believe there currently is) to disable avatars and/or signatures, as well as the added option of just disabling images in sigs (I'm not sure if this is possible on a user-by-user basis, but it's just a suggestion).

I'm willing to host up to 10 avatars if we do go offsite, with the filesize restrictions mentioned before.

What do you reckon, Pirate?

I like the external avatar hosting option (and the 100x100 size - it means I can just use my LJ icons), but also there should be the option of having 50x50 avatars hosted on site for those that don't have their own hosting.

but I dislike the banner idea, i could see that just getting annoying
Infact I like the current sigs which have gotten italics and things like that removed from them...

A 'long, long time ago' there used to be sig images. I still remember sambo's 'I'm a silly boy' or somesuch with a mixture of fear and amusement.

I'm more fond of the avatar upsizing proposal myself, but small sig banners didn't bother me back in the day (and I had 28.8kb/s then as well : o)

banners = ghey

There's enough attention whoring on ZGeek already without people having LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME banners.

Yeah, banners are annoying, Flashy icons are bearable as they're off to the side... but can you imagine a horde of flashing banners between each entry? horrible.

That's why, if they are implemented, it's important to be able to turn them off.

However, I suppose that flashing ones would be annoying.. kind of like a few avatars are at the moment...

I changed my avatar today and had no problems at 64X64.
