I can't upload anymore images. I am over my quota. I don't like it :( When did this quota come into affect and will it be here forever?

werd!
i tried to upload a pic and it says the i am 5.83MB over my quota.
WTF?
Megabyte

The quota doesn't bother me so much, so long as it were easy to go back and delete my old, unlooked at pictures, rather than having to search through old posts.

FIX FIX FIX. I had lots of hot porn to upload (or pictures of my superhero, I can't remember).

Sorry guys, I had to put in quotas because bandwidth is becoming an issue and costing me extra. I just can't afford it at the momment.
But I am open for discussion about this, I've set peoples limits to a meg. I'd also like to point out we have a gallery for uploading images.
gooey
19-10-2004, 12:35 PM
so gallery uploads are seperate to post uploads?
Pirate
19-10-2004, 12:39 PM
Yup, and the gallery is also setup to prevent leeching which the forums don't do.

Do you want any money? Like seriously? I have a few dollars spare. You should have zgeek premium accounts or something ;)
dwarfthrower
19-10-2004, 12:45 PM
Yeah... set up a paypal account or something that we can chip in a few bucks here and there.

I agree, I'm sure many people would be willing to donate some funds to the continuation of Zgeek.
Pirate
19-10-2004, 12:47 PM
I have a donation thingy in the FAQ where you dump directly into my account. There is also a function of vbulletin to give people subscribed accounts for $.. would you be interested in that?
Benwah
19-10-2004, 12:53 PM
I donated, all you bitches do the same!

Subscribed accounts would be good, but I wouldn't want to see people locked out of stuff becuase they didn't have a subscription. So it would be difficult to manage the trade-off between providing an incentive for people to take out a subscription and alienating those who can't afford it.
Run it up the flagpole and see who salutes is my opinion, if you don't get any takers, then you're no worse off than now... If you do then there's some extra cash lubricating the zgeek wheels.
Benwah
19-10-2004, 01:02 PM
I reckon just a subscription to increase the quota would have some takers.
I mean a 5MB quota plus some other perks for $20 a year or something wouldn't be out of the reach of most of us right?
1000 people take that option, and BAM you've got your hosting costs all covered, just don't spend all the money on weed yo!

Im really scared to offer subscription accounts. I think people would go nuts.. but I think maybe if subscription accounts where offered giving more file space for PM's.. attachments.. maybe even including bigger avs and profile picture space. What do you think of something like that? I could even throw in pop3 email addresses.

I'd be willing to chip in a few dollars here and there to pay for costs.. but yeah the subscription thing may be a no no cause of people who don't have the extra costs to spend... but donations are a good idea, better yet those to donate have a partitioned off space through zGeek... much like a small webring type thing where what they post (and pay for) can be used for their personal use and also through zGeek.. it's an idea (may be stupid... but an idea)...

do that.
if people 'go nuts', tell them to go fuck themselves. because if they go nuts over something like that, as long as nothing is really 'taken away' from them by not subscribing, then they don't deserve to be treated any other way.
i think this sounds like a fucking awesome idea.

If I agreed any harder with this post I would have to change my name to Rev. Saul Goode and get the face operation to look like you also.
Add some features (nothing that will cost you much more) and charge a small fee for these feature, then delete this thread so you don't get taxed on the income ;)

All right I'll give it a bash.
What I'll do is this.
For subscribers they will get:
- Access to a special subscribers forum.
- More storage for attachments and PM's.
- Bigger AV and profile picture space.
- @zgeek.com email with webmail and pop3, I'll give 10 megs of server storage per account.
- Level 2 ninja powers if they don't already have it.
Now I just gotta figure out how much this should cost.

I think the real issue would be ensuring that subscriptions don't lead to a segregation of Zgeek where subscribers post and read in a private area, ignoring the greater population. So yeah I think enhancements on the services that are currently provided rather than introducing new services for subscribers is probably the way to go.

how does one upload to the gallery?
most of my image uploads have been for news article submissions anyway. could there be an easy way to upload images to the gallery for use in News Articles?

A minor detail for the time being, but perhaps shareholders could be acknowledged with a little badge or symbol under their avatar - something so others might know who is helping to keep the Zgeek alive and the mods stoned :p
Maybe enhancements like an additional ninja status, or an extra testicle/superfluous nipple might encourage a few more donors.

Cool, Im gonna see what extras I can install in the forums, maybe there is a hack for subscribers.. if your interested have a browse of www.vbulletin.com and www.vbulletin.org for anything you'd like to see added.
So far this is what I have set up
Subscribers user group:
15 meg of attachment storage
80x80 Avatars (instead of 64x64).. I hope it fits, I will test this tonight. The avs have 500kb storage so you can add more.
1 meg limit on profile image.
150 private message storage.
Access to pron (when im finished building it) and a few extra functions like more control over your posts.
Pop3 email account.
Im thinking maybe $20us a year? the forums and paypal only do US dollars :(

hmm. $30 just for bigger avatar? (only thing im interested in) Perhaps not.
How about a US$10 plan? Zgeek email is cool, but I have enough addresses already.
I'll donate a bit eventually, but as of now, being a college student makes me broke. My paypal account has zero dollars, my bank account has $1.50 (I'm totally serious). :D

OMFG BIG AVATAR!!!!!!
It's $30 to get access to a damn good website and forum, so I'm all for it, where do I sign :D?
I wouldn't be worried about doing this either, if the existing features are still kept, then the current people who dont want to pay shouldn't have to worry about the site at all, they're basically going to be getting a more stable site, as the funds are there to keep the bandwidth going (I'm assuming that's how it all works anyway).
In the mean time, bring on the Uber 1337 ZGeek subscriber accounts

OK well $15 sounds good to me.. and you said a year now? I'm cool with that... now it's 5am right now and I am not fully awake so.. PM me or whatnot when this thing goes down and on my next pay I'll chip in my two cents...

One other suggestion, from someone who knows about licencing and subscription, make the yearly access expire all on the same day for everyone (I.E Yearly access starts on I dunno, 1st of november) and make the payments less and less as the year goes on (I.E if you want to join in december take of 1 month from the total, divide the total by 12 then multiply by the number of months)
Sounds fiddly, but trust me, a little work up front saves you having an annual renewal date that is different for each person.

Whell, if we're talking about funding for bandwidth, Google Adsense might be an idea. There are always lots of guests online at any given time and they usually outnumber actual members a few times over. Looking at the stats now, there are like 10x more guests than members! I guess they use the bulk of the bandwidth, so why not slap a few text ads in their faces too?

have the front page plastered with ads until you sign up. then ads no more.
but that will piss alot of zgeekers off though.

Whell I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly wouldn't mind. There's a huge black space at the bottom parts of the front page that might benifit from some content; even if they are just google ads. Who knows, they might occasionally put up some interesting ones.

we could do with helpin pirate pimp the site to get publicity that will offer him free funding, like get it on international TV for something.
Okies, I've read thru the lot. I've not responded to any email as there's too much shit!
I'd have been happy to pay $50. Sorry I was thinking that $20aus was a little cheap - I spose this depends on how many people sign up and the actual costs. Appologies to those students. ;) You have to eat right?
The car sites seem to run this okay - and they're generally meat heads. It can't be that hard.
Having worked on a billing platform and assuming the system is going to be ugly - when's the yearly turn over date. I strongly suggest something like 1st of november. Then backdate any stragglers. ie. if you want to sign up for the yearly signup in the 20 of december, it's charged at 11/12 rather than 10/12. (aus dates)
Pirate - you're right. Don't make a big hairy deal out of it - just make it easy and like a subscriberthon for a community radio show - fuck it - legitimise zgeek for once!
Also - if (god forbid) you actually get in-front some sort of charity IT donation or purchase of er... "prizes" for some random event wouldn't be too bad for "members".
