anyone know of a command prompt to remotley shutdown/restart a winddow 2000 pro box?
Ive got the ip address, and can ping it too and normally i would netmeeting in to it and restart but the pc has hung, hence the need to restart it and its location is a pain in that i cant call an office worker to go and wander over and hit the reset button
beer will be included if someone can help me with this one :)

shutdown -t 30 -f -s -m \\hostname
-t sets it to shut down in 30 seconds (fair warning)
-f forces applications to close
-s means shutdown, not restart
-m tells it which machine/IP address
Not to be narky though, but "shutdown /?" tells you all of this, it ain't rocket science.
If the PC is not responding though a remote shutdown probably won't work. It isn't able to remotely press the button for you...

On your machine type - shutdown -r -m \\PCIPADDRESS -t 20
-r forces shutdown and restart
-m specifies pc name
-t xx specifies shutdown time in seconds
A display window should appear on the pc you are attempting to shutdown with a countdown timer
EDIT: tooo slow...

The shutdown command-line utility is available on Windows XP Professional, and was found in the resource kits for 2000 Server and Professional.
But, and this won't sound friendly but is meant to be, if you don't know where/how to find these tools yourself then they may not be the ones for you* - remote shutdown tools are especially unsuited to people who don't know what they're doing, as shutting down important infrastructure often happens just before management tear new arseholes for you.
There's a great website for this sort of stuff by the way (linky (www.google.com.au), linky (www.microsoft.com/technet), and linky (www.google.com/microsoft))
*=the number of times I have seen somebody drop a server remotely and discover it was the wrong one is roughly equal to the number of newbies I've seen run the command line utility. They usually only do it once, but that's because I revoke their access immediately afterwards. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING beats getting out of your chair and eyeballing the situation.

I don't know how to find them, when I have managed to get my hands on these tools I haven't caused a problem. So where be they?

Xp pro is straight off the cmd line.
Havent got a 2000 machine to check, but i dare say if you install the resource kit it would be in the path, therefore available in the cmd line.

Also, the XP version of shutdown.exe runs fine on Win2k. So just copy the .exe and you're off and racing.

If you want the tools just ask dude as I do have them all at home ;)
But also MSDN will have all the tools online.
Also sysinternals is a great site for extra tools or better ones then in the resource kits.
