Hey guys,

Have any of you setup a VPN using linux before? If so what software did you use & how did you find using it?

I can do it through windows but those skills will be wasted in years to come.

Appreciate any info.

Thanx :)

You mean as a server or as a client?

Dude that is a quote I remember from 6 years ago ........... like it or not MS skills will always be useful - just look at the 'Post you Desktop Screenshot' forum ...nearly everyone.

Not that one is better than the other [not going near that one] good luck - I am sure there are plenty of robust solutions - I think there are even some platform independant ones - I let you know.

Only reason I use it is for games... everything else, nix and Mac.

I'm pretty sure Mandrake (the most user friendly Linux distro) has a VPN package.

Personally I think IPSec (http://www.openswan.org/) is the way to go.

Poptop (http://www.poptop.org/). Easy to setup and manage windows/mac users on it. There are problems with routing GRE on older ADSL modems though.

I found that ipsec is more for server-server connections, and pptp is better for client-server. I say this because Windows 2000 doesn't have a proper ipsec/l2tp client (unless you pay for cisco)...

Okay, so if I want to set up a VPN to allow people to effectively LAN over the internet to my place, what will be required to do that? Same shit as listed here?

Give Mandrake MNF a go it should give you a nice GUI for the configuration. Its like the other firewall distro's, but better.

PPTP is far from secure though, removing the 'P' from VPN...

openvpn is the best vpn client server by far. ipsec is a bitch on linux and the entire protocol is a mess. once I switched to openvpn, all my vpn headaches went away. its even got a windows version

Thyraeus, i know MS skills will always be required but alot of the enterprise customers my company has have recently changed to linux. This is one of the primary reasons i want to learn how to do it in linux.

I recently visited a customer site & i was referred to www.freeswan.org .

i might check it out, but ill also have a look at openvpn too.

thanx guys.

i seriously wouldn't bother with freeswan.
aside from the fact it kinda closed down and was replaced by openswan and superswan, openvpn is soo much easier to setup. I have deployed alot of both types and when i discovered openvpn and tested it, i switched all my clients i could over to it.

Didn't freeswan bite the dust a while ago?
