I have a 1.9 with a geforce ti4400 and 768 meg of ram. Runs really smooth and at about 30-45 fps on that box. Doom 3 however was lucky to get over 5-10 on the same machine.

PC spec:
Athlon 2400+
GeForce 4Ti 4400
512 RAM
Current Half-Life 2 settings:
1024x768
All medium level video specs except model detail which is High and water reflection which is on the lowest setting (not that I've seen any water yet).
I admit I'm only just past the first teleport thingy (yeah, look I only played it for the first time this morning before work), but it runs beautifully. No slow-down at all. Only once, when I first got into the open air of City 17 did it pause for even a second. I'm going to test out my upper-limits of my spec tonight.
I am VERY impressed with the engine thus far considering all of the pre-release hype about having to upgrade to a fucking Cray to be able to run the thing.
As compared to the Doom 3 experience system spec-wise, this is much the same for me, but in Doom 3 I did have to tweak the config files to achieve the same outcome.
Having only just gotten into the game I can only comment on how it's running...But I'm super impressed with the skin textures and the City 17 atmosphere.

Ravensholm was annoying. I pretty much had no ammo for most of it and had to Crowbar and Grav it. It's silly that when I found ammo it was so damn much there was always some left. Made me wish I had bigger pockets, as some of it just goes too damn fast.
And I hate those new headcrabs. Bloody evil.

That boat is fun :)
I got up to the end and it was flying directly towards me, i killed it and it made this magnificent diving arc straight on top of me.
So i reload and the save point is about .1 of a second after i killed it. now i have an awesome reply of my death.

Up to the mines now too. fucking creapy. had plenty of ammo through ravensholm.
still got a reasonable ammount of ammo now i'm in the mines.
Keep your eyes open for half life symbols and crates marked supplies. Half life symbols usually mark supply areas. crates usually contain med packs, batteries and ammo.
Use the grav gun on the new head crabs or you WILL run out of ammo
you have to use explosive barrels and shit to conserve ammo
what's with those jumping zombie guys? aren't they dead already?

I finished HL2 last night. Wow, fucking awesome.. Though the ending sucked a little bit.. man but I never would have guessed Gordons father was a head crab.
Now I'm replaying the game with the uber gravity gun only, sooo fucking cool..
If you guys want to learn how to do this.. its a bit tricky do this.
1. Load a game where you have the super grav gun.
2. pull down the console and type changelevel d1_trainstation_01
3. After the level has loaded type give weapon_physcannon or impulse 101
WARNING - don't attempt to use the grav gun on any enemy vehicles or your air boat or buggy as it will crash the game... at least it did on mine.

Great game when on foot, but is anyone else getting frustrated by the HUGE amount of time spent in vehicles? At first it was pretty cool, but I'm now quite a few hours into the game and I'm sick of driving that bloody buggy around.
SamBo
22-11-2004, 05:05 PM
at least on the buggy bit, you can stop every now and then and get out and explore a bit.... the boat bit was worse! I actually ditched the boat at one stage, only to find that I really needed it to keep going through the level.... ooops!
Besides, the part with the buggy isn't that long really, and you can do cool stunts in that thing :D

It was a good game. I think it is incomplete though and they have had to delete some scenes. Some of the scenes that were in the two 20 minute demo videos are missing too. They said it was going to be longer than Half-Life but I finished it in about 15 hours. It was also missing the Half-Life "feeling" and some of the songs were the same songs that were in Half-Life, I think there was 1 or 2 new songs in the game.

Yeah the music was in Half-Life :P But yes you are correct, not all of the ambient music was in Half-Life. I only recognized one or two completely new songs, I don't mind if there's old ambient music but the actual songs should be new (Except the Valve intro music). The ending song was a remixed Half-Life song too.
The sand part was cool, I remember thinking "Voi vittu..." when I got on the rock.

Even though halflife 2 is a brilliant game, It's ridiculously over-rated. Most of the reviews it has received take this form:
Halflife 2 Review by some fuckwit
OMG DOOM3 YUOVE BEEN SERVED! olOL!11
Score: 10/10
Which is rather sad for those of us that expect some form of in-depth analysis of a games strengths and weaknesses.
more colourful commentary to come...

yeah, i'm kinda getting tired of reading reviews like that. There is relatively no decent info about the game out there. It's all just stuff like "this was worth the wait" and "wow, this is better than doom3".
I finished the game last night. I was expecting more to be honest.
don't get me wrong, it's a good game and I enjoyed it lots, but I was under the impression there was about 72 hours of game play to be had, and it wasn't anywhere near that.
And there was no sniper rifle
and no frantic underwater bits like in the first one :(
I also felt like i couldn't explore properly, like, there were some areas where I felt I had to rush through inorder to survive. Once I get cheats, I'm going to go back and check it all out properly i think.

Maybe that's why I took ages to finish it. I explored every corner. Most had nothing of interest other than dead bodies and annoying headcrabs. Some extra ammo and stuff in other places.

My mate came over today and I was able to play it for the first time... SWEET HOLY MERCIFUL CRAP SHIT! This has to be the most amazing physics engine ive ever seen, not to mention that the beginning of the game was so totally immersive! As I walked through those appartments was throwing all of the TVs with beardo out of the windows at the APC, it was so satisfying! I got up to the bit where You going through some ruined sewers and there are lots of barnacle clusters on the roof.

I agree with the story part. I think some reviewers are being a little too over-critical regarding the story. They say that it was non-existent, didnt answer questions, well so fucking what? just leaves the window open for a Half-Life 3.
and frankly I don't see that as such a bad thing, considering how good #1 and #2 have been.
Well it took me a while but I finally have a copy. (Thankyou astro!)
I've been playing pretty solid .. which is probably pretty bad since i'm meant to be cleaning, packing to go away and packing up boxes to move rooms. What can I say? I'm addicted.
The grav. gun is fun to play with and the magnum is oh so sweet. The machine gun is still fantastic and I"m glad they left in the secondary grenade fire from the first game with this gun.
The head crabs are pretty standard (i like the way you can shoot them off the head of the infected people though this time), I'm enjoying the new beasts and the amount of detail in the characters. The A.I is pretty damn good .. unfortunetly for the foes too ;)
I'm liking the vehicles even though i've only played with one so far. Using that helichopter gun was so much fun :D
My machine handles it pretty well. I'm going to miss this game when I go away :p
