Hey peoples. I got a gift voucher for Dymocks a few weeks back and don't know what to get. I went in there a few days ago but nothing really stood out. So, my request is for some recommendations, what's your favourite book? The first few that sound cool I will go and buy and I will read.

Thanks in Advance,
Dave

ps. why couldn't they have given me a voucher for Borders :(

If you don't find anything you like you can always give it to me for Christmas!

Anything by this guy (http://www.davewarner.com.au/books1.html) - I particularly recommend City Of Light or Exxxpresso.

Or else, have you read Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy? It's pretty awesome. ;)

If you like meaty cop thrillers, there's an English writer named Mo Hayder who's written a couple of bursters - Birdman, and The Treatment. Read them in that order.

Another great English writer I've discovered this year - Mike Gayle. Relationship comedies, but from a male perspective. My Legendary Girlfriend is my favourite, but they're all good.

Another must-read is The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon. It's won awards, and rightly so.

That should all keep you going...

Anything by Neal Stephenson if you like intelligent sci-fi
Most books by Carl Hiasson, esp. Stormy Weather if you like funny crime thrillers
Any of Ian Rankins scottish crime books (Inspector Rebus series)
Anything by Iain. M. Banks (sci-fi) or Iain Banks (novels of weirdness and charm)

50 bucks ;)

I've read the Cryptonomicon and Quicksilver, Crpyto was cool, quicksilver wasn't that exciting (IMHO). Mike Gayle is looking good Soc. Hmmm.

Give Dave Warner some consideration as well ... he's one of the best authors in Australia (yes, he's much better that Matthew Reilly!)

Robert G Barrett - The Ultimate Aphrodisiac is a great book from an Australian Author ;)

I'll second that.
I'm going though his Les Norton books at the moment. :)

Meh ... I've read Barrett ... Warner is better, much better.

Another good comedy/crime writer is Janet Evanovich. She's written a series of books (10 so far) all set in Noo Joisey with her main character Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter.
