Ive been offered a job as a network admin guy
Had 2 interviews, met a few of the personnel , all looks good, pay is about the same as my current job
But here is the crunch
after my second interview i went and saw an orthapedic surgeon
and he informs me that i need a knee reconstruction
i asked him how much time off work would i need
he said ill be back to work in 4 weeks but you would need to do light duties for another 3 weeks
so the diemna is do i stay at my current job and take 6 weeks leave
or try and ask the new prospective employers if they can hire me in 6 weeks rather than 4...
what do i do ....

ask them. if they want you they will probably be fairly flexible. however you will have to take into account your notice period on your current position, as that may affect it, ie being 10 weeks (6 off, and 4 notice).

also is it immediate that you will have the surgery?

I'd say that if you enjoy your current job, then why risk losing a good thing? I mean, if all is well with your current job, pay's about the same, and you have the choice between risking that, or taking 6 weeks leave, I'd rather (if i were you) stay in my rut and take the 6 weeks off :)

That's my opinion.

Also, how'd you hurt your knee?
Lemme guess, dirt bike riding?

edit: btrfly's post has appeared before mine, and i kind of agree with her too :) If you want the job, and they want you, then theyll probably be ok with it. :greenman:

Explain the situation to them and see what they say. If it's an urgent role you might be in the shit, but most employers understand that health comes before work.

but most employers understand that health comes before work.

That's exactly it. A happy healthy worker is a motivated worker... and if you're going to be in pain and unhappy, then your capacity (and motivation) to work is going to be reduced... They'd probably rather you have some time off and come back refreshed and pumped to work, rather than injured and unhappy

it may take a while for the surgery to come up - so take that into consideration. you may have already started this new position before the surgery comes up. just make sure that if you take it, you tell them that you are to have surgery, so that its not a surprise.

Should i inform the recruiting agency first and tell them ?
i did tell them that i may be a candidate for a knee recon in my first interview with them,

yeh tell the agency. they will understand and will be in a better negotiating situation with the company. also if you go directly to the company the recruiters think you are a bit of a trouble maker

Thanks Btrfly
i spoke to the agency, they said it may violate discrimantion laws but i added that i didnt want to upset a new employer by saying i need a 6 weeks off work during my probation period. The agency said they will talk to the firm and let me know
Anyways thursday morning is d-day with the surgeon

thanks to all for the your comments and advice , much appreciated :)

aaah now this gets messy... :barf:
i said yes to the agency
i get the contract offer and paperwork from the prospective new employer.
I go to my current employer and hand in my resignation
they offer me a payrise, and let me work from home on full pay while im recovering from my knee surgery
aaahhhhh :swear:

ah the old place is gives me the shits
so many undelivered promises about our it structure
i know money isnt everything but i dont want to enter salary auction between the 2 employers.
having said that the pay increase is substantial and will help fund my mortgage...
