The decision ends speculation he was on the verge of handing over to former England A captain Mark Nicholas.
Channel Nine also hosed down reports about Ian Chappell's absence from this week's Adelaide Test by claiming that all members of the commentary team were likely to be given a rest at various stages of another hectic summer.
Shane Warne will most likely be available by the time Benaud, 74, who has been part of the furniture at Nine since 1977, calls it a day.
Warne will undoubtedly be given some kind of major role with the network but his past indiscretions may rule him out of the prime gig.
"Richie is an icon of Australian cricket and he has signed a contract to stay on for another three years," said Nine spokesman Jamie Campbell.
"He loves the game. Cricket is his passion and his life and he has no intention of stopping as a commentator any time soon. There's no point in talking about replacements for him when he's just signed up for another three years."
