i don't.. but i'd like an older one, or even a new one, just for one thing

Hellcats: over the pacific... the coolest arcade flight sim game ever to grace the old macs. :)

So ahead of its time.

Back on topic : Macs are very "usable" in the sense that they dont seem to suffer form those same problems PC's do.

But i'm happy in my little rut with my pc, and i'm gonna stay here :)

Unless I get an iBook.

I'm testing out one of the new g4 ibooks right now. They are really nice machines, but I would never buy one as I'm a PC guy. I just wish Apple designed PC's because they are so sexy.

There is just something about a mouse with 1 button that shits me. If it wasn't for that I would probably own an iBook.

i just put the 1 button mouse in the drawer and use my 2 button optical scrol from my pc on to the mac and its nice...also plugged my usb pioneer dual layer dvd burner in and its even nicerer :)

Do both buttons work?? Or does it just make it feel even?
Either way, it wont change the fact that the built in touch pad only has 1 button, which is the main problem for me, as i use my current notebook in locations where an external mouse is innapropriate.

TK, next time you use a mac, think of a situation where you would normally right click, then hold down the ctrl button while you click. You will notice the same thing happens. It is barely any harder than pressing a seperate button, and macs are known for their single button so I think they will hang on to it for as long as they can.

I have a G4 1.5 ghz powerbook. I couldn't be happier to be free of windoze ....

I used macs all through high school and at a place i did some DB work for and knew about the ctrl key on the keyboard, i am just so used to right clicking everything. I am trying to learn all the key commands that are much faster than right clicking.
I always catch myself calling the windows key the apple key, makes me look like a fucking fool.

I think Windows and Mac have their place...

Macs are great for most things, but they do fall down when they hit a critical security flaw/bug. Although this does not happen too often.

Windows have their place to piss everyone off, make their OS impossible to integrate software with, use bad intel chipsets (which are not as good as powerpc chipsets) and we need some company to try for world domination for something funny to read about in the news.

Go Unisys mainframes.....

I have OSX running inside a virtual machine on Windows XP. Does that count?

I actually often find myself about to call the command key (aka, the apple key) the windows key. Same thing, opposite way around. ;)

I am still having trouble adjusting to the changed shortcuts in ohsex. Why they could not stick to the OS9 shortcuts I do not know. And yes, I am well aware I can change them, but standardisation as a whole is better than one persons convenience.

Edit: Oh, and sorry for pointing out something that was already bleedingly obvious to you - it was a little hard to tell your level of experience so I decided to assume the worst. All to often do I have users who seem (to me) to know macs inside out ask me stupid questions about things I consider basic tasks that I thought any mac user would know.

Unless you change it and roll the change out to everyone else's machines, thingy. The joys of being able to control the drone's machines :D

I used to have an iBook, and used it primarily for music (iTunes), email and web surfing whilst sitting on the couch.

For some reason I'm starting to miss my old iBook... Might get myself a new one someday :D

Got a 12" G3 Ibook. silver edition
It does what I need for now.
Just always said, it's candied up BSD.

Wish though. I got a PowerBook, I found myself needing serial ports to connect Uplinks to cisco gear. ibooks don't have it.

I don't link up my ipod to it anymore, use my pc cause of storage.

I think if i got another laptop, I'd probably get a mac. I don't see why not, anyway.

Even if it was just for one reason alone, it would be to play "Hellcats: Over the pacific."

Not a big mac fan, or a windows fan for that matter, but I've been using windows for years so I'm kinda used to it.

I've got to say mac seem great for all your multimedia needs. I'd say the biggest problem with macs is that they're not as widespread as pcs. Being a programmer there are issues related with different environments and the tools available. For me macs would definately NOT be the best solution, but I can understand why people like them.

Personally I find they're more easy to use and less configurable. If you know what you're doing PCs are great.

Merudo

Yeah.... I think in the long run i would prefer a PC too. I own three, but my limited experience with macs leads me to believe that if i just want a no-fuss laptop experience where i can just DO what i wanna do, listen to music, watch a movie, whatever, and have somethin that looks cool and runs well, with minimal fuss, then a mac might be the way to go in that department.

FYI; BSOD is no argument, I have never had a BSOD on any one of my Windows machines (that be 3), I only ever see such an occurence on computers in client environments where people haven't a clue. Mind you, back in the days of NT such an argument was quite valid.

your quite lucky to not have the problem...seems to me that most of us have had it and no matter how many times i have updated drivers ,windows etc...i liked the pc when i was running qnx and beos but everything seems to be windows based..thats why i decided on the mac..now that i have been running it for awhile its been a little less hassel.
Also back a few years ago i use to also run an amiga...that was fun to use and i am starting to like the mac more and more every day..like i did with the amiga

Well HAL, I'll have to disagree with you there. I'm a software engineer and I use windows and unix machines all the time.

I still get the BSOD from time to time, espeically when you're trying to run an app server such as Weblogic or Websphere and you don't have the correct service packs and/or patch levels (and trying to find them out is near impossible). If you've got oracle or some other DB running on the box it gets even worse.

I swapped my PC for a powerbook about 4 months ago and I couldn't be happier. All the unix tools with a kick ass UI. If I need a pc I just boot up virtual PC and then I have the best of both worlds. I haven't managed to blue screen it yet either :tits:

I don't have a mas, but i do have an old iMac keyboard and mouse which is going to get used in a casemod one day. I'd be tempted to use it on my main pc but as it doesn't have a delete key I can't login to Winblows.

I'd love to get a dual G5 but poor homeless TAFE students can't afford shit.

Since we're on the topic of Macs, does anyone here know any good clean up, defrag, compress programs to run on OS 9.2 or Panther? One that runs well for both actually would be great!

I totally agree, i can not remember the last time i had a BSOD. The only time as you said we get BSOD at work is when the user fucks with their machine and they have no idea wtf they are doing.

I've seen both 2k and XP BSOD so it does happen and more than M$ care to admit.

I have been a Mac user since around 98/99 coming from the Amiga. I vowed to not get a Windoze machine. The biggest issue at the time was money but I worked out to do video editing on a PC than a Mac was going to cost $3000 more for the PC and so the cost issue dropped. I've never looked back since.

I started of with a G3 450 iMac then went to the G3 iBook shortly after they came out. I wrote that one off a couple of months ago due to dropping it on an open screen. My insurance company paid out and I basically got me a brand spanking new G4 iBook for $100. :)

Panther just rocks and I'm seriously looking at getting Tiger when it comes out.

I didn't think MacOS X required defrags due to something with the FileSystem? I could be wrong or basing things on some hearsay, I don't know.

OS9 was a shocker for defrags, but then again so was FAT16 and FAT32. OSX and how it treats its file system is similar to Windows 2000 & XP. All three will need a defrag once in a blue moon (as opposed to every fortnight like their predecessors).

It is still a file system and file association table, so it will still need the occasional defrag, there is no avoiding that - the machines are simply at a stage where it is not needed as often and you will not notice as much of a difference (but when you do go to run it, expect to be waiting a LONG time).

OSX (panther) defrags automatically anything under 20MB, I read about it a few places.

Be interesting to see what Tiger's new filesystem is capable of.

Meh... tiger looks alright. Looks to be more for the 64bit platforms rather than the older models. am quite pleased about the dashboard (they finally figured out there is a better place to put the calculator, iTunes, bullshit)

also, the automator seems neat (just a cronjob), but it needs it.

Better BSD support is what I'm wanting. Get shit like bzip2 and whatnot in there. that's what I need. better native to X11 support so things like gimp, openoffice, x-platforms can be initialized without needing middlemen

lowededwookie
30-12-2004, 08:04 AM
better native to X11 support so things like ... openoffice... can be initialized without needing middlemen

Have you tried NeoOffice J (http://www.neooffice.org/)? It uses Java instead of X11 and can use the fonts installed on the system in native format instead of having to convert them.

wolfpac181
30-12-2004, 08:15 AM
Nice.... I'll give it a go. But using other things like gimp which backbones off of X11, I have to use still. So we'll see.

lowededwookie
30-12-2004, 08:31 AM
Yeah GIMP is cool but needs native support.

I understand that there is a group trying to port over the GDK Libraries to make them native to OS X as well so that could bring a bit of hope for Native versions of GIMP and the like. I'm not sure how far the project has gone though.

I have had my mac for over 2 years now. I like the security etc but I will get a PC when I buy a new computer in the future simply because of compatibility and software issues. Msn, webcams, etc. It just doesn't work. But everything apple releases works on PC's anyway (just not vice versa).

I have a heap of old macs lying around, used to have 2 mac plusses (1 is now a fishtank) & a Quadra 605 (pizza box style) i still have a powermac 6100, 9600, Powerbook 520 & a 350mhz iMac, also used to have one of the first white 12inch dual usb ibooks, selling it was the worst thing i ever did!

Hopefully going to buy a 12inch Powerbook, though the mini is looking good as is the ibook. Decisions decisions!
