Because of a|A's great thinking here is a thread for discussion of ideas for the theme of the next photo comp. There's been a few ideas so far

Winner of this comp chooses theme for the next one
Photo must have a human subject in it (thanks kleph)
Since Christmas is coming up maybe a party/christmas theme.

In a few days i'll make a poll with all the ideas that have been submitted and we can vote on it. So guys, what do you think of the current ideas and do you have any others ideas to add to the list.

This photo taking thing is great fun ;)

Also next comp I am going to ask everyone to name thier photo and if they want, to add a little caption/blurb about it.

I cast one vote for cold, gloomy weather. ::Cough:: yes I live in the US....heh just kidding, but for real when I actually have something to add to this thread, I'll put it in...here are a few ideas.

- Nature
- People
- Buildings + Architecture

I could list more, but I don't know how wide they should be.

Some ideas, might not suit the christmas theme but could be used on another month. Maybe photos of weather anomalies or things that are out of the ordinary. Still have to consider however that we do not limit the theme to only a select number of people but to allow everyone to participate

Leave the Weather topic until january please ;) Brisbane gets some wonderful storms around then.

I say Capture some Motion.

So motion in a still image. Wether that be something like someone fire twirling ( always a classic for the slow exposure ) , or a complete freezeframe of a drop of water as it hits the ground. You can always get some great shots by capturing motion in it's path.

I like the idea guys, keep 'em coming.

Plenty of votes in the other two threads. Very cool ;)

Just some ideas for future ones, how about
just insects
any animals
just birds
portraits
photo must contain water of some sort, or a certain specific item that can be found in many types/places
close ups (macro shots)
flowers only
landscape shots
photos from a certain point of view (ie scenes from a childs point of view or something like that)
buildings
cityscapes
night shots
shots that capture an emotion or feeling of some sort, perhaps a specific one ie envy, pain or loss, happyness, joy

It may be a bit hard for me to find any insects in a -10 to -20 C weather. Or anything alive except rabbits that run away and hide.

How about a photo where you're in it.

Might make it tricky to take the credit for taking it but that could be part of the challenge.

Then again, this could be a stupid idea !

I say stick to topics that have to be intepreted
rather than themes that are "take a shot of this".

I mean, who want's to look through a gallery of bees.

Mind you, if insects was chosen, I found the best damn place to take the photo today ;).
( who said the insect had to be alive ? )

lets make it a bit more abstract, eg

perspective
wood
weather
motion
reflection

as i posted in the other thread, i think requiring a human subject is probably the best option. none of the current entries have one. so they all have a very high degree of technical expertise but they lack that specific personality having a person as the subject brings to a picture.

for me, i would welcome it as a challenge to go out and get a type of photo i tend to avoid taking. i assume several of the others might as well.

i really like the weather idea but i suggest we wait until march or april or one of the months where there is a lot of changes weatherwise (that photo of the storm hitting sydney is what comes to mind). with the more opportune timing it gives everyone a better opportunity to get a killer shot.

At least one has a person (or at least an Elf) in it!

Also
I forgot to mention
Each month StygiaN - Each month on the "What should be the next theme" poll - there should be a "NO THEME" ( Ala Round One ), Option. This way we can ensure that if people get bored of themes and just want a free-for-all round, then they can vote for that too.

Sweet as guys, all info has been taken on board. I have some bad news though. On Monday I have to go to hospital to have my wisdom teeth taken out so I will be out of action for a few days. Anyway I'll set up the final poll the day before I go and an ideas poll as well.

My fave ideas so far are motion and having a human subject in the shot. Also a|A, good idea. Should we just start an ideas voting thread now? We've got enough ideas to keep us going for this month at least ;)

I think that's a good idea, but we could also cycle between theme and no theme monthly. That'd keep us from getting tired of it, but still allow us the challenge of a theme.

Also: PLEASE try to be fair to me, I'm stuck midway into winter (I live in the US if you didn't know), so I don't get storms or weather anomalies. Also the area that I live in now doesn't get much snow, so I'd be screwed if it was decided to be that. :D
