View Full Version : Final Fantasy XII
Any fan of the console RPG genre knows what Final Fantasy is, and I just checked out the trailer. Looks AMAZING. There are only a few clips of gameplay in there, but it looks like they are going back to the "Futuristic alternate past" thing again, swordfights, guns, airships, all thrown together. I love it...the storyline looks epic...i hope they put a lot of emphasis on it. I hope it turns out well. Some screenshots i've seen point to an active battle system, not the random battles that are usually seen in Final fantasy.

This will be teh pure pwn (again)
+rep to everyone just for posting :D
but the dialog is spoken :(
Heh yeah, when I got X-2 I had to finish X still, now all I need to do is beat X-2 with 100 percent.
As for spoken dialogue, I believe all of the talking they showed was in the CG sequences or whatever. I'm sure most of the talking is done in the normal format. :D

Well I hope so. Spoken dialog sucked bat's arse in FFX
I really didn't mind it too much. I mean it is different from the usual format, but if they get reasonably good voice actors it can turn out well as long as the whole game isn't based around it. I've seen some REALLY horrible voice acting that almost makes a game not worth playing before...glad that's never happened to FF.

You thought that FFX had good voice actors in the english version?????
I dont know about that, i thought that in some parts it was horrible.
Its the little things like instead of recording an actual script reading for the scene, that they would simply use a generic "Yes!" in places for Yuna. It really started to bug me after a while, but gladly it wasnt enough for me to dislike the game.
I know that it is a huge amount of space, but with compression i couldnt see that it would make the size of the speach files a lot bigger.
Theres also the fact that the models were lip-synched in Japanese, then when the english dub was made, of course then nothing would actually line up, but i was not noticable in some places or when the camera was panned back.
The only thing that i found wrong with FFX was the sound, it let me down a bit, but im a sucker for anything Square, (other that Ergheiz, Ughhh) I never got to play that plane shootem-up. I forget the name, but it looked rather cool.
No no no, I didn't say it was good, but it wasn't so horrible it made me want to stop the game. :D
As for the plane shootemup, you're thinking of Einhander, which was one of the best side scrolling shooters i've played in a long time. (and I just played it for the first time last month) heh

Thats the one.
I saw it and really wanted to play it but i dont think that they released it over in Auz.
Shall have to download it and play it on the xbox or go fetch my modded PS1. :)
I have the .iso and played it on PSXemu or whatever. It worked perfectly. If you have trouble finding the torrent I might be able to arrange an upload or something.

FF XII, can't wait. Played a little bit of FFX and FFX-2 and enjoyed them both (didn't own either of them so I didn't get to play them too much). Infact my mate brought around FFX for me to play while I am at home recovering, shame he left my controller at his house :(
I have heard the fighting system is going to be different in FFXII though, like all real time and stuff. Wierd.

The battle system is nearly always revised or different in some ways for each one. Which is not a bad thing as so far they have all had their strengths and weeknesses.
Where at first i thought that FFX-2's system was stupid, after playing it it was a really good system.
So far though i think that FFVII's was the best. I liked the Materia System
I think I liked FFX-2's system immediately just because it reminded me of the class system of Final Fantasy 5. I agree Final Fantasy VII had an awesome system, I kind of miss it. :D From what i've seen (which is incredibly little) this system looks like it might be interesting. I'm excited to see what square comes up with next.
One thing that I did miss in the latest Final Fantasy and will miss in this one is Nobuo Uematsu's music. =P

Indeed, his music was awesome. It fit the game so well and gave it a lot of feel.
Small update, I'll add when needed:
Ok overall, FF XII is going to feature a totally renovated battle system, totally real time, none of that random encounter stuff...you immediately phase into battle (much like in FFXI) and you can rotate the camera to your liking while your people scurry about the battlefield. You have long range and short range attackers, so you can order your long range guys to stand back while your short range fighters take all of the physical damage. From what i've read, all of the spells that are familiar to any FF player are still featured as well. Apparently, the fighting system also borrows the timed attack from FFXI, instead of selecting what to do at the beginning of each turn, one can assign an action to the fighters and they will perform this at the end of every cycle. This allows all of the characters to be controlled simultaneously (one can set up the attack plan of the whole group in one fell swoop). Another system new to the offline FF is something called the Gambit system...which i'm not sure if I totally understand yet. I think it's a complex way to assign actions to your teammates...like the only example i've read is that you can make your teammates either follow the leader's actions or do their own thing. All I know is I can't freaking wait till this game comes out.

i admit, the FF games look cool, but could there be any more? just saying, maybe it's because they want to make more because it's so good, i dunno. http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/158631 check this out, they poke fun at games, like FF. see what they say, it's so true
Do you mean why do they make so many? If so, think of a novel series that stays along the same genre, but never really contains the same characters or setting. That's what Final Fantasy is like, for the most part, the stories in the Final Fantasy series have been incredible, they suck you in, and yes, even get you emotional (FF7...the death). It kind of sucks you in and they're known for their multitude of secret additions that keep people playing for incredible amounts of time. They're not recycled or old crap, and they add enough change to make it very unique compared to others in the same line. :D That a good enough explanation?
I checked out the video, it's funny but the comments made me laugh. some people actually were like "that's SO true". I see it as a parody, but gaming is far from going downhill. New innovative games come out as much as the recycled stuff, you just have to look a little harder and not listen to the fanboys. :D
when I was younger, aftr each successive FF game from 7 onwards, me and my friend would try to predict or come up with new game mecahnics. We were stumped after 8. We had no idea how the developers could implement any other game engine. Genii they are, genii
