Warne played the last of his 193 one-day internationals against England in January last year, a week after Clarke had played the first of his 34. But the leg spinner's subsequent 12-month ban for diuretic use, and some vintage performances since returning to the Test arena, fuelled speculation that he might bring the green-and-gold pyjamas out of retirement.
Yesterday he did, but only to hand them over to Clarke.
"If people didn't believe me for the last 18 months, hopefully they do now," Warne said.
"I've definitely retired at this stage of one-day cricket. Of course I'd love to keep playing, but I'm smart enough to know that if I continue to play both forms of the game then I don't think I'd play another three years of Test cricket, like I'd like to."
