View Full Version : What Camera Do You Have?

Heya, since we have a few photo threads going on at the moment I am kind of interested in knowing what camera's everyone is using to take their pictures.
I've only just started getting into photography and have a pretty crappy Canon SD110. It's very small but only 3mp with a 2x optical zoom. It's cool in some ways with the manual mode, being able to change stuff and play around a little. It's gotten me hooked on taking photo's though. I bought it for a trip to India earlier this year. Wanted something that would fit in my pocket (and there isn't much room in there ;)). It has a solid metal casing as well, ooh.
Dreaming: I'm falling in love with the Canon EOS 300D right now. If I can save up the cash I am going to get one. Maybe one day ;)
So what camera do you have? What do you like about it, what dont you like?

I've got a Canon EOS 3000N - 35mm with a 28-80mm zoom
And a lovelly Manfrotto Tripod to go with it.
I love the wide angle on it ( great for catching some landscapes )
28mm is cool but would like wider lens
weight is pretty good ( could be a little heavier)
Good presets and cgood overall control without having to remember everything ( great with 35mm film as you don't want to get it wrong )
i dont like -
it doesn't have DOF preview :( this sucks
I hate scanning film - its a pain in the ring
its not a Nikon D70 ( that would be nice - its on my list, give me a year and i'll have one )

Panasonic Lumix LC33 as pictured below:
http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2003/0312/pana01.jpg
It's nice for a first camera, it has good battery life and it is pretty easy to use. If and when I upgrade I think I'll go for something with more manual settings, but that's probably just coz I'd want to explore it a bit more. I'm very happy with the shots I've taken with it.

As stated in a previous thread, I have a Canon AE-1 Program and a Canon A-1. I use a 50mm 1.8 for most shots and 28mm for buildings a 70-120mm zoom for zooming.

Ive got heaps man.
The one i use most is the
nikon d70. got a few lenses and remote flashes and shit for it. good setup actually.
Then ive got two olympus (om1, and an om2)
and a bronica Z, , with shitload of lenses. damn fine light metre. and both 120roll and 35mm film backs.
I learnt most of my stuff on a nikon D1, and a hassleblad (the model escapes me, but it operates almost exaclty the same as my bronica).
Recently i got to use one of the newest canons. the one thats 12mp? quite frankly its a dog man. the white balance is never consistant, the lenses take forever to lock in on a subject (manual focus is good, but with my main use you dont have time to sit there and check depth and focus and everything, its point and shoot), If you want decent lenses for it you have to get these mamoth fuckers, so gone are the days of keeping a 55mm on the camera, and a 200mm in ur pocket. u are forced to carry a backpack around. the batteries hardly lasted, and the standard flashes that came with the whole setup (we got two identical flashes) the batteries didnt last more than 100 shots. The SB800 that i have for the nikon, i chucked soem shitty $2 shop rechargable batteries in them, and then i did a shoot which was 300+ pics, and the flash was still firing afterwards.
Anyone else had similar problems with the canons? Complete dogs to use, nearly on par with the nikon D1.
EDIT:
my d70 looks a long way off atm :(
No way man, do what i did, give someone in HK $2000, i got a d70body, the standard lens, a nikon AFD70-300mm , a 2gig sandisk card, an Sb800 flash, carry case, two spare batteries... um, what else. a whole set of flash gels, which coem in handy for studio stuff. a tiny but sturdy miller tripod
gear is cheap there man.
Plus the D70 gets cheaper everyday

You sure it wasn't a mafia connection?
Anyone else had similar problems with the canons?
Not canon but a Sony point and shoot. I just shot a digital only vacation and I am un-impressed. Terrible in 400 speed situations. It can barely take a photo at dusk without blurring. I'm not sure I'll ever go digital. I would like to get my hands on something like the D70 though. Too bad I went to old school canon lenses and didn't keep my nikon stuff.

You sure it wasn't a mafia connection?
yeh man heh. go down to wanchai, find all the places that have cameras, say "he is selling for this much" and then he'll drop and then you take that price to the other guy. etc etc. by the end they start throwing more shit with a deal
and the second they say "no" you turn around and walk away... and they just come running after you saying 'ok ok"
So yeh. you know how to barter.. get to it! u just gotta be a hardarse, and keep in mind they pay cute but poor looking girls to hang around in the stores so you feel sympathetic and pay more. just be a bastard about it!
And yeh. nothing beats film for posed stuff, or art shots, when everything is perfect.. but when its a shoot now or never situation and u wanna ge the right shot, digital is the way to go, as usually the medium its being published in doesnt require high quality (new papers etc) plus being able to review shots then and there is the best feature.
But yeh. nothing beats film still.
Even cannons making of the ccd the actual size of a 35mm negative, still the d70 shots look better than it?
The only CCD ive seen that can pass is when you get say a hassleblad and buy a digital back for it isntead of a film back.. so its like. a ccd the same size as 120 roll film.. generates like 50meg images on normal.
shame you could buy 20 or 25 high range digital cameras for the same price! lol

At my wife's insistence we bought a Canon EOS 300D. Very nice camera, you can either go fully manual and adjust everything, or if you're a lazy fuck like me leave it on full auto and let it make all the decisions for you. Takes beautiful pictures, but I'd like to get another lens for it as the standard one doesn't have much of a zoom.
And because I let her get that, she had to say yes to my demands for a 106cm plasma tv which got delivered yesterday ;-)
Nikon CoolPix 8700 (8.0MP)
Had a friend from Hong Kong bring 2 of them directly from a Nikon factory and got them for around $600AU each with 1GB x80 CF Card and 2 Spare batteries.
Was a very good deal :)
The main reason I got this camera was because of it's time-laps feature, makes things so much more easy. Have been looking around for some new lenses and accesories for it, starting to put a hole in the christmas budget. ;)

Canon 1Ds - have had none of the problems that djcreedy was talking about, but it may relate to a familiarity thing. Learnt my craft on the Canon for 35mm and Bronica for medium format. Haven't had the chance to play with the Nikon for a fair comparison though.
The old Canon D-60 was a very difficult camera to use, metering tended to vary by a stop and a half, we ditched them fairly quickly. The 1Ds has been excellent to use. Also use the Canon D10 as the backup camera. Closer to the very familiar EOS format in terms of useability, white balance and metering work quite well. Use the 550EX flash, which we find pretty versatile and not overly harsh on the batteries.

Samsung V3 - 3 mp, 3x optical, the macro and super macro functions are so much fun. Fun first camera for me to own as I usually use my old man's cameras, his current camera is a canon SLR 6mp beast.
Scored a water housing when i bought my camera and got $70 off the total price which was good, it will make for an awesome summer.

I have a Cannon Power Shot A 400 digital for taking to parties and stuff for 'happy snaps'
But for the real photography, i have a Pentax SLR, two fill flashes, manfrotto tripod
Lenses
14mm f2.8 (bring on the wide angle!)
28-80mm f5.6
125mm f1.8
80-300mm f3.5
Far too many filter to list, and all the other accesories.
But yeah, what started out as a hobby, soon turned into a passion, a quite expensive one...
My christmas present to myself is a Fuji GX617 Panoramic Camera, medium format, 6cm x 17cm film frames, very cool, cant wait to get it :-) I am now officially broke though :-(
Many other film fanatics left in this world? I am about to start a 'What film do you use' thread to see if there are....

I'm getting for Xmas (actually have had a chance to get my mitts all over it before xmas :) ) a Sony DSC-W1 5mp. Haven't played with all the features yet, but looks like a good camera overall. The only downside is you have to buy Memory Stick PRO to have fine quality pictures stored.

I'm running with a Canon EOS 300 SLR filmstock camera with
-Canon 28-90mm f4.0 lens
-Canon 75-300mm f4.0 lens
-Sunpack 5000f flash
-velbon CX560 tripod
This is a nice kit and I'm happy with it. Took all but the flash on a 3month backpack thru Sth America last year... Changing between the short and long lense was a pain in the arse at the time, but the photos came out so well that it was worth the effort :D

Canon 1Ds - have had none of the problems that djcreedy was talking about
I phoned to work to ask the specific model. it was the
EOS-1Ds MarkII
I dont know if its familiarity or not, i can usually pick up a camera and have it sussed sttraight away. This thing was just inconsistent and slow. and the batteries had no life.
They replaced their nikon D1 which they'd had for years and all their equipment with it, for this canon. now the D1 was a dog. nikon reps basically told me that in a meeting. basically said the d1 was a peice of shit and the flashes never work with it properly. which was true.
In my honest opinion though, one of the much much cheaper cameras. of any brand, nikon canon, will do a better job. maybe not in image size but all around. get a 20D or a D70.

We've been using our 1Ds for the last 18 months with no notable dramas.
Pentax *istD 6.3mp
Sigma lenses 18-55/28-80/100-300
Sigma flash, monfrotto monopod, vanguard tripod and heaps of cool filters
Likes - Autobracketing, multiple exposure (up to 9 shots), well organised controls, very light, very small and awesome picture quality.
Dislikes - the four way control button on the back is small and fiddly to use.
I have a Nikon D70. I like it.
I have not seen it get cheaper in the year I've had it. It cost AUD2100 not HKD2000.

A good buy ive seen latley is one of the newer fuji fine pix. the little chunky beast that looks like an slr but its not. with all of its features it stands pretty high in the field of non slr digitals. have a look, i think pretty much every photo store will have them. cant remember the price. but it was very cheap. this could be some weird drug flashback though... but seriously, check em out, they have awesome features

I had a play with a friends Canon EOS 300D on the weekend and I was more than impressed. I've never used an DSLR before so she had to sit with me for 15 minutes and explain what everything does but once I got the hang of it I was in seventh heaven. Hopefully I can get some of the pictures I took and post them in one of the threads here, I was so impressed with how good the pictures can looked. Made going back to my crappy little digi cam so painful.

My current camera is a Kodak DX4530 (5mp, 3x optical zoom), which can take some great pictures (http://gallery.shakesbeare.com/honeymoon/100_0343) if you're lucky - as its fully automatic (no manual settings).

well ive wanted a decent camera and that crappy 1.3 megapixel one i borrowed off my sister didnt cut the mustard, so i bit the bullet and bought a cheap camera. I got a Kodak EasyShare CX7310 today, 3.2 megapixel and the small little thing goes hard! 5x zoom, takes nice photos, really easy to use (yet the manual is like 100 pages?) and i like it.
Would've preferred to get something a little better but seriously, this thing for what it is kicks ass. I'm happy with it.
and the best part about it was the price. it was definitely right... at $140.

I've got the Finepix S3000 (as always, i bought it mere weeks before the release of the S3500 (http://www.fujifilm.com.au/digital/cameras/camera.asp?id=38) ).
It's overall quite nice, for a beginner (which is what I am, so...)
However, it took me about 30 minutes to get frustrated with its lack of manual controls. It's either fully automatic, or fully automatic - no manual control at all to speak of.
I've several friends who have the S5500, which is in many ways nicer - but still suffers from lack of manual control.
Ultimately, like so many others, I want an EOS 300D - I've had a chance to play with a few and it's a beautiful camera. Since I'm not likely to be able to afford one this year nor next, I'm planning a Canon Powershot Pro S1 next.

I've got a Sony DSC-F828 pictured below.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf828/Images/frontview.jpg
Got it cheap directly from Sony.
Good Bits:
Body swivels independently of lens, making it the perfect perverts camera.
Really really fast at taking and writing photos (for a fixed lens cam that is).
Manual Zoom lens so you get more control and longer battery life.
Bad Bits:
Really grainy on high ISO. Shouldn't ever take it over ISO 200.
Some purple fringing (kinda like a halo) around bright reflected edges.
Dreaming: I'm falling in love with the Canon EOS 300D right now. If I can save up the cash I am going to get one. Maybe one day ;)
i have one of those.
