View Full Version : My Website
I just finished the 18th million update and I feel that it is ready for release to the general public:
http://home.comcast.net/index.html
this is the first website I've ever made or tried to make
what do you think, what could I improve?

Are you sure that's your page? It comes up with the comcast members services page. Do you work for comcast or something?
If so it's pretty good for a first effort. Very good.

StygiaN, I thinks ajca must have not inserted the full link.....and that his site is a personal site hosted by Comcast....
ajca, you need to insert the full URL mate.
Pretty sure they meant:
http://home.comcast.net/~ajca/index.html
Damn, sorry guys, thats what I meant Kyle
thats what you get for writing something from memory
the real link is http://home.comcast.net/~ajca/index.html

the quote on your front page is easily answered.
because people who have grown up have usually got a lot more to worry about than whether time is going to go backwards

what could I improve?
A random sprinking of ideas from the top of my mind:
The title of the home page is "Site 02 home page". It probably should reflect the title of your site.
At 1024x768 the site barely occupies half the browser window. Consider an extensible layout that caters to all resolutions rather than just the lowest common denominator.
The navigator on the left is blurry... consider sharpening up those gifs.
Some of the navigator options don't work. Either link them somewhere or remove them.
The [+] and [-] motifs on the navigator are confusing as they lead the user to believe that the options should expand / collapse if clicked.
The "Something" link leads to a gif file, losing the site navigation, leaving the user with only the 'Back' button to get back to your site.
The scrolling text at the top scrolls quite quickly.
It has a link in it, if you put your mouse over the link the link scrolls past. Consider stopping the scroller on mouseover so that even the slowest user can click the link.
The above mentioned link is borked.
Light grey on white is not a good colour combination... especially on low contrast screens.
Additional plugins are required to view some content yet no wording on the site to the effect of what those plugins might be.
There is a lot of unused whitespace between the bottom of your content and the text links at the bottom of the page. To the point where they scroll off the page unneccessarily in some pages.
Counters are a completely unneccessary overhead.
The "News" page doesn't follow the same format as the rest of your site.
The "News" page title reads "Welcome to Adobe GoLive 6"
The "News" page hotlinks images from other sites. Poor form, use your own bandwidth.
The "Resource" page (Shouldn't that be 'Resouces' if there are more than one?) At least half the links are borked.
If you must use tables for layout, at least switch the borders off.
"Contact" page... text all runs together in Firefox.
Form doesn't submit
Form has no validation
Also try to pay attention to spelling and grammar. The lack of which makes a site very difficult to read.

The title of the home page is "Site 02 home page". It probably should reflect the title of your site. - I know it says site 02, and I'm trying to find a way to change it
At 1024x768 the site barely occupies half the browser window. Consider an extensible layout that caters to all resolutions rather than just the lowest common denominator. - I like it that was cause its the easiest
The navigator on the left is blurry... consider sharpening up those gifs. - Its not too bad
Some of the navigator options don't work.Either link them somewhere or remove them. - I made the image with a few extra spaces because I haven't made all the pages yet
The [+] and [-] motifs on the navigator are confusing as they lead the user to believe that the options should expand / collapse if clicked. - do you have a better idea for a site navigation?
The "Something" link leads to a gif file, losing the site navigation, leaving the user with only the 'Back' button to get back to your site. - I use the something to link random images that I want to show my friends
The scrolling text at the top scrolls quite quickly.
It has a link in it, if you put your mouse over the link the link scrolls past. Consider stopping the scroller on mouseover so that even the slowest user can click the link. - no clue how to do that
Light grey on white is not a good colour combination... especially on low contrast screens. wheres the grey? I tried to make everything white
Additional plugins are required to view some content yet no wording on the site to the effect of what those plugins might be. - what content is this?
There is a lot of unused whitespace between the bottom of your content and the text links at the bottom of the page. To the point where they scroll off the page unneccessarily in some pages. - the bottom links are kind of bugged and I'm trying to fix them
Counters are a completely unneccessary overhead. - overhead?
The "News" page doesn't follow the same format as the rest of your site. - working on it
The "News" page title reads "Welcome to Adobe GoLive 6" - oops
The "News" page hotlinks images from other sites. Poor form, use your own bandwidth. - I'm trying to do that
The "Resource" page (Shouldn't that be 'Resouces' if there are more than one?) At least half the links are borked. - all the links work for me
If you must use tables for layout, at least switch the borders off. - good idea
"Contact" page... text all runs together in Firefox.
Form doesn't submit
Form has no validation - the form was just a test that I was trying

This a stupid question, but be gentle with me. Where can you view other peoples blogs? Not anyone you might know beforehand, possibly someone overseas. For example, there was an architect in Baghdad who published his blog during Saddams reign and during the war and which was read by thousands each day.

The explorer style nav buttons are a nice idea but there's too much compression on them and they look like a bag of shit.
Sorry.
I'm redoing the side Nav Bars
when I saved them I forgot to turn off compression- bid mistake on my part
and whats wrong w/ Age of Empires?

Funding?
I don't think asking for money is a good idea. You're not actually giving anybody anything are you?
Brush up on the html and design skills, post content regularly, and then if you're still around in a year or two maybe, just maybe, ask for money.
In the meantime you'll have to settle for rep+. For making an effort.

One question, what the hell is the point of your site?
What exactly do you want to do on it?
I dont mean to sound rude but if it is just another "Hooray for me, I made my own website" they are a dime a dozen and probably wont attract much attention.
I think you should really find out what you want and then make it clear to peope.
IE. www.zgeek.com =- Forum for geeks, you can get that in 2 seconds of browsing.
Anyway, its just food for thought...
This is the first site I've ever made
Horay for me
I just wanted to know my abilities
and asking for more money is just a joke - don't take anything serious
