well, i am headed back stateside in a few weeks and i am currently setting up a huge Amazon.com order to await me when i get there. most of what i am getting are resources for my journalism that i can't get here in english.

so, for the sheer hell of it, here is a peek at my reading material over the next four months.

The Other Path: The Economic Answer to Terrorism (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0465016103/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) and The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0465016154/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): these two books were written by peruvian economist hernando de soto. they are considered basic reading for understanding the politics and economics here and have had a worldwide influence. in addition, de soto is a probable presidental candidate next year.

Searching for a Better Society: The Peruvian Economy from 1950 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0271018739/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): a detailed overview of the modern economic history here. required reading for anyone wanting to cover these issues.

The Peruvian Experiment Reconsidered (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0691076480/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance): a follow-up to a groundbreaking work that examined land reform here in the 60s. this volume turned out to be an essential preface to the turmoil that gripped this country during the 80s.

The Shining Path: A History of the Millenarian War in Peru (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0807846767/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): the definitive volume on the war that clamed almost 70,000 lives and still affects all levels of peruvian society today.

In Defense of Globalization (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0195170253/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): the view from one side of the fence....Globalization and Its Discontents (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0393324397/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): and the view from the other. the point here is that i want to get versed on all the players involved since this is such a key issue in south america.

United States and Chile: Coming in From the Cold (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0415931258/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance), United States and Venezuela: Rethinking a Relationship (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0415931851/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance), The United States and Argentina (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0415932807/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): i have the book on peru from this series and it is simply excellent. since i eventually want to become a continental-wide journalist, i need to start doing the homework now.

The Politics of Market Reform in Fragile Democracies : Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/069111787X/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): and this is more of the same

The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000634DCW/ref=ord_cart_shr/102-3642894-0671310?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) four disks of glorious geeky goodness.

no. i dont plan to read them all at once. the problem is, i dont expect to get back to the u.s. for many months. so i have to buy all these now since they are not available in south america. luckily, i can write the $300 or so i am about to drop on this from my taxes since it is work related.

i am also considering getting these two...

After the Washington Consensus: Restarting Growth and Reform in Latin America (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0881323470/ref=ord_cart_shr/104-6582122-6730346?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): a look at current latin american economic policy by the man who is running peru's economy. kinda important, that.

The United States and Mexico: Between Partnership and Conflict (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0415930618/ref=ord_cart_shr/104-6582122-6730346?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance): because it will kill me not to have the complete set of this series.

but the lord of the rings is for when i am back at the parents house with the glory of dark beer to help me through the oddessy.
