Hey all

I got up earlier this morning, all hung over, and went to the beach to take some photo's of the sun coming up (it was a 3 minute walk away ;)). I am so glad I did. A rising or settings sun just makes for some of the best photo's.

Share your sunrise/sunset photos with us!

Thier not real pretty to look at but I quite like these two taken from my front veranda because of the way the light was that day. It was about 6 in the arvo and with the clouds around and smoke in the air everything was dark and red and gave an eery feeling because it was quite still and its usually still very light at that time of day.
The second one was taken a couple of minutes before the first and half the sky seemed red.
The camera was in auto mode and I just resized them. Click the pic for the bigger version.

Dont know if these attachment things are gong to work.... ?

Anyway,

goto http://jmatrix.homelinux.org/zgeekimages

and there is a gallery of 4 shots. 3 sunrise at Caves Beach near Swansea, and a sunset of fennel bay, Lake Maquarie.

These ones were snapped with my digicam, you'll notice my tripod with slr attached in the sunset shot. If i get around to scanning the shots i took with it, i will post them cause the colour is much better. Also, the slr lense doesn't suffer from the crappy red flare that you can see from the lense on my digicam in the splash shots. i generally just take a few shots with the digi so i can see waht to expect when i get my film developed.

anyways, take a look.

(sorry if my server is a little slow....)

Caves Beach? Fucking awesome, I'm going to be there on Christmas Day. I am so going to take a picture of the sunset ;)

Why were you at caves beach?

ps. all the pics are small :(

asdfjkl
20-12-2004, 02:35 PM
The photo's at caves beach are sunrise ones, but you should be able to get some nice pics of sunset there. Have you been there before ?

I live about half hour away from caves beach, and did the early mission one morning a few weeks ago cause i though it would be worth it.

Its pretty nice out there, you could get some excellent sunset photos form nearby swansea, cams warf area or belmont looking over the lake.

and you can get some interesting shots from one or teo of the caves at caves beach, depending on the tides :-)

if you goto http://jmatrix.homelinux.org/zgeekimages and click on the thumbnail you'll get a medium sized image, then if you click that, you should get the full sized one at 2048*???

StygiaN

I am sucha dumbarse, ofcourse I won't be able to get sunset over the water there. Der Styg, stupidhead.

There is a distinct joy from getting up early and doing something cool like that. Looks like I'll be getting up early on boxing day morning ;)

Sweet pictures mate.

Anyone have some good advice for taking sunrise/sunset photo's?

asdfjkl
20-12-2004, 02:51 PM
haha, thats cool, its definatly worth the trip down to the caves in the morning.

The few minutes before, and the few minutes after sunrise/sunset are often the best. You dont always have to include the sun, you can get some very vivid images without it.

asdfjkl
20-12-2004, 02:56 PM
Another tip.

If you want the sun large and blury like it is in the splash photo's, use a small f-stop number(large opening). If you want it small, used a large f-stop number.

A note on the above tip, if you dont have the sun in it, there generally needs to be something else interesting such as clouds or an unobtrusive forground object.

O.k. no more secrets today :-)

asdfjkl
20-12-2004, 02:59 PM
ok, one more, tripods are a must at sunrise/sunset. (or at least a rock or something to sit the camera on, and if you dont have a shutter release cable, use the time delay to avoid any movement)

and unless you are catching action such as in the splash images, use the lowest possible iso that you can. (that goes for every type of photo actually)

You can probably 'hack' you digicam to give you these results. If it has 'portrait' and 'landscape' modes, then put it in portrait to get a small f-stop values, and landscape mode is programed to use larger f-stop values.

StygiaN
20-12-2004, 08:48 PM
Ta for the info mate. My little digi has portrait and landscape modes. All this camera stuff can get so confusing though.

for my picture i set the apeture by blocking out the sun and letting the light meter read the scene by the clouds. thus it overexposed the sun a bit but the colors in the clouds came out very well.

but i have a fully manual camera and can do this type of thing whereas digitals and semi-automatics resist such extreme light variations.

best advice? use a whole roll of film and vary the settings.

another tip is to look for a day with good clouds. the refraction of the light on them is where the great colors come from. if you have a perfect cloudless day, there really won't be any contrast to make the shot dynamic. but if it is overcast, well then you obviously won't get a shot at all. look for a morning where rain is forcast in the afternoon or visa versa.

as for more photos...

here is a picture i took from on mount misti near ariquipa. we camped just below the snow line at about 4,000 meters. you can actually see the coast from that height.

yeah, it hurts to get out of bedat that time. Worth it after the fact but it still hurts :-)

you should bear in mind, that the summer solstice is upon us (mid january?). Ths sun rises as far south as it does all year.

take a look around when you have take sunrise pictures, as some locations lend themselves well to the sun being in diferent locations. I am waiting till the middle of winter for a shot that i have planned, i think it will turn out great :-)

I've been trying to get the ultimate shot but I don't get a chance to go to Taranaki (New Zealand) very often, despite my family living there.

I've seen the shot only once and man it's great. If you go not far from Stratford and you're just on the right angle the sun sets behind Mount Egmont/Taranaki and it looks like it's setting into the crater.

If there's cloud just behind the mountain it lights up in the most eerie way.

I wish I had my camera on that day.

StygiaN, have you been to the caves at caves beach before? Here is a picture taken from the main cave there at about midday on my initial scoping the place out mission.

Shots from here in the morning and evening can be quite good because there can be some interesting colours in the sky. Also because there is not as much light outside at these times, the sand will expose a little better in some cases. As you can see on this shot taken with the digicam, the sand is a little under exposed, and the water is over exposed.

I will have to get my slide film scanned, i have a couple of quite nice morning shots from the cave.

Anyway, you will enjoy it there. I should warn you, that from this cave you wont see the sun when it rises. Get there 15 mins before sunrise to suss the joint out.

Here is a good resource for planning your missions....

I've been meaning to post these pics in here for ages, but haven't gotten around to it.
These are pics I took of the sunset on NYE 2002. I was in Perth at that time, hence the sun setting over the ocean thing. They are progressive shots (I took more in between, but some were blurry and others didn't look as good). I just wish the photos were able to show just how amazing this sunset really looked...

I'm back form holidays now so time to start contributing again.

Here is a pic that i took at Warners Bay in Lake Macquarie.

Now let me first explain why there are somany blotches, strange patterns and it is darker than it should be. I sent my slides to a company called 'digital max' to get them scanned and for $25 / 36 roll, they gave me the shittiest scans they possibly could have. They didn't even bother to take the strip out of there clear plasic protection strip and that is what caused the blotches, plus the dirt marks are from the dirt that was on the outside of the protection strips, and they scanned them all too dark.

This was one of the best quality pictures i got back which says something for how crap the others were.

Anyway here it is. It was taken on Fuji Velvia 50 at around 11 - 16 apature and about 4 - 6 seconds exposure time (cant remember the exact figures....)

I had to have the camera right over my head for these 'cos there was a hedge in the way, so I couldn't frame 'em as I would have wanted. Still, I'm happy to have had the opportunity.

For the man-made competition in Feb I wanted to take a picture of a beautiful sky over a horrible Black Country landscape which I pass on the way to work. It's basically a downhill street of run down houses with a huge old smokey factory at the bottom, but I kept forgetting the camera - or I'd take the camera and the sky would be shit.

I thought it might make a nice change to the more common sunset shots you see.

http://forums.zgeek.com/gallery/data/thumbnails/1/bridge_2.jpg I got some of these today aswell but I wasn't right impressed. Just behind the bridge is where they store asbestos. Lovely. I was thinking of getting some of the freight containers, but they didn't really catch my eye.

Here is one I took last weekend of Cottesloe Beach. The sun was setting behind me and its a 30 second exposure which is why it looks so bright in the water.

Good job. I love shots (like that) with a layered effect (ie layers of different colours etc). I was chatting to a professional photographer a couple of weeks ago and she said that its quite a common technique !

20D. yum. I have a 10D and love it. 20D would give that extra res and faster frame rate. Cant wait to see some sunrise shots from the 20D! Make sure you post some for us.

Thanks mate.

Yeap, took me 4 visits (over 10 days) to that location before I got that shot. It was either too windy or the clouds weren't pink enough.

Definitely stick with the Canon or Nikon if getting a DSLR. They have the only *real* range of lenses.

If you are looking to purchase lenses, let me know and I can recommend an ebay seller from Hong Kong that sells at *very* reasonable prices. *very* helpful concerning customs and questions etc. I placed 6 orders with 100% satisfaction.

:)

If the 20D is too costly, have a look at a second hand 10D or even a 300D (new) or the newer 350D (uses the same CMOS sensor as the 20D).

edit: In fact, check out his price for a 20D. $1792 AUS inc shipping. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=30018&item=7502045519&rd=1

Here's a one from my septic system. Okay, I was standing on the water tank, which is next to the septic system. Both of these are just out my back door. Can you tell what made me build there?

Oh yeah, the specs: straight-forward landscape mode on the Panasonic DMC FZ50 at about 6~8 x zoom. I like.
