WMP tells me I need a codec - but it can't tell me what. I downloaded the movie Hero, and the audio won't work in WMP, DivX, Winamp... anyone know how I can find out what codec I need so I can watch my movie?

Another excellent tool to find out about audio and video codecs is GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/). It rells you all the stuff lurking in a video file and will even perform a test render.
You'll save yourself a lot of trouble in future if you install a codec pack, such as SLD Codec Pack or defiler pack. After installing they should be available for all players.
