it has been a bit of a down christmas because i am here i lima and unable to be with my family or any of my friends for this holiday (i will be going back to see them in january instead). no matter how old you get, it always bothers ya when you have absolutely nothing to open for christmas.

but, i called my sister last night because i knew she was having a christmas eve party and my folks would be there. it turns out this is, quite possibly, the best christmas ever.

my sister announced she is pregnant. she had some medical problems when she was younger and we believed it was very unlikely she would ever be able to have a child. while it is still very likely there will be complications the doctors are very positive about her chances to carry to term.

that is, hands down, the best present i could have possibly have wanted. but what came next was pretty good as well.

then my parents told me they paid off my credit card. my account has been damn near the max for three years now. when i was laid off in late 2001, i was forced to use my credit to make ends meet - although i was never stupid enough to own more than one card. part of coming to peru was to be able to slowly start getting that amount reduced (since living expenses are so cheap here).

this gift is incredibly important, not because i can now go buy things - i can't, although a great deal more credit i still have a limited income - but because i can start making my budget work. living as a freelance journalist, you are always waiting on the checks to come in. now, i can spend the money on the front end knowing it will be arriving down the road.

the end result is i now can start really doing reporting work. instead of having to wait to accrue enough money to start doing things - like going to ecuador to write stories about the political turmoil there - i can simply go as soon as a line up a buyer or two for the story.

so, merry christmas everyone. i do hope yours is as wonderful as mine has turned out to be.

It rocks... All my cousins are younger than me by around 3 - 7 years... So about the same time that they got "too old" for lego, I started having kids. I've got about four large cardboard boxes full of lego that have been donated by various relatives.
