well, it is that time of the year again...
you have barely recovered from your christmas hangover and haven't even finalized the plans for Dec. 31 that will put you in an even more dehabilitated state. it is a strange limbo that you really don't want to ruin by thinking about how much better a person you will be in the next 365 days.
but it is probably best to start thinking about it now before that long grey sunday you are certain to have.
so, in order to kick off the festivities, i am resolving to do the following...
not do any work outside of my freelancing. i have worked various odd jobs over the last year to bring in the extra cash i needed to make it here in peru. the time has come to stop all of it and make it on my journalism alone.
become conversant in spanish. it has taken more than a year but i have finally reached a point where i can here this language and stumble through a conversation. by the end of next year i want to be able to conduct interviews without a translator... telephone interviews.
become a continent-wide journalist. since arriving here i have concentrated only on events here in peru. by the middle of next year i want to be taking regular trips to other countries to report and sell stories. this brings in a few sub-resolutions...
travel to ecuador
travel to colombia
travel to machu picchu
travel to huaraz
keep my debt to a manageable level. with the help of my folks, i am now back in the red. if i want to stay here in latin america and keep this experiment working, i must plan my finances way in ahead and stick to them diligently... not something i have been spectacularly sucessful at in the past.
get laid. kind of a given, really.

In my part of the world being in the red is bad, and in the black is good.
I was going to give up smoking but I was ill a few weeks back and so I've done that already.

go ahead, make fun of my dyslexia. why don't you resolve to find a bit of humanity in your cold cold heart?
and resolving to keep not smoking is still a damn good one to make. i had my last cigarette in june of 1995 but i still look at every day as the next one without smoking.

go ahead, make fun of my dyslexia.
Don't you mean colour blindness?
I'm not making any New Year's resolutions as I won't keep 'em anyway. If I was to it would be something like: Go on a diet, get fit, start cycling again, stop banging my head against the nodbugger, start juggling etc again.
However, I know I won't, so bollox to it.

Mine are:
1)Get a job where I don't have to lift shit all day.
2)Start working out, to build some muscle. (I have skinny little girl arms)
3)Start a band
4)Get out and start meeting new people (there is about 15 people I know within about 150 km)
5)Find someone stable to share my life with. ( If I follow 4, this should fall into place as well.)

Don't you mean colour blindness?
no. dyslexia. i confuse very similar words and concepts. it has caused me a great amount of trouble my whole career as a journalist.
as for the resolutions i have seen here. they all look great. rather than the "conquer the known world" unachievable nonsense these are practical things that require tenacity. start on jan. 1 and simply try and do them every day.
most folks have forgotten their resolutions by march. i promise 100 rep points to whoever keeps to their resolution after that.

I got this one off my girlfriend, I think it's good:
My resolution is to try to be better at remembering people's names when I am introduced to them. It is a worthwhile skill to have and I am not very good at it.

2. See my neurologist about antidepressants like he suggested.

This may help;
When you have a bit of quite time at a party etc, picture the person's face you've met and say it to yourself seven times aloud. Usually works a charm.

To get a date from a girl from ZGeek. (Not a resolution, but a fun goal!)
I resolve to:
Go part time at design college
Utilise my companies health insurance refund scheme
Travel to Asia
Buy a Mustang
Tame down my tendency to act quite so impulsively. Before jump, think.

The two mixed together are sublime.
I don't make resolutions. I know I'd never stick to them, and I hate to disappoint myself.

well, 2005 is almost a fourth of the way through so it is a good time to revisit the resolutions that seemed so bright and hopeful in early january...
not do any work outside of my freelancing
got this one pretty much. i have not been doing a great deal of freelancing but i have not had to take a teaching job to cover expenses. now to keep it going...
become conversant in spanish
ugh. the bitch. on the plus side i am now able to hold an intelligible conversation and do simple interviews (even on the phone). but the fact is i only absorb about 10 to 15 percent of what someone else is saying when they talk normally. lotta work left.
become a continent-wide journalist
i was planning to go to ecuador but sacraficed that plan to take more spanish classes. it is still possible but i gotta keep it in focus over the next several months.
keep my debt to a manageable level
well, i havent been spending much but it is starting to add up. because of resolution one i have been limited in my ability to pull in funds. and the classes needed for resolution three aint cheap either.
get laid
oh... so... close. but, sadly, no bannana.
that's the lowdown on mine. so how are you doing with yours?

my original resolution was to drink less, but I decided recently that that was a stupid resolution and have since taken steps. HUZZAH!
2005 update for moi...
I resolve to:
Go part time at design college
Went one step better and got in to a grad dip at university. Even conned my work into paying for it. Currently responding in this thread instead of researching for my assignment.
Utilise my companies health insurance refund scheme
Um...no...year aint over yet!!
Travel to Asia
End of this year will travel to Mongolia
Buy a Mustang
To expensive a dream just yet :( Did, however, purchase an XR8 Rebel to ease the pain :D
Tame down my tendency to act quite so impulsively. Before jump, think.
Weeellll...it's tamed down in respect to money spending impulsiveness. One cannot go too much against ones grain ;)

Can't remember what my resolutions were. Probably along the lines of look after my health better and go back to uni. Doing well in both except now I seem to be drinking too much. It's not affecting me too much yet but I'll have to keep an eye on it. Mostly quality wine so it's not too bad.
