Sure you can slow the inevitable but all Civilizations come to an end at some point. The Roman Empire lingered on in it's death throws until 1453 with the fall of Constantinople. Western Civilization can be expected to do much the same. The best that can be done is to try to survive it. No, I am not talking about holding up in some cabin in the woods with a shit load of guns and a years supply of chocalate bars, but being prepared to face some hardships. Think of what it would be like if a litre gasoline (petrol) cost more than a days pay, if your local grocery only stocked the shelves once a month, you electricity was only on for a few hours a day, and you had to hand carry your water to your home. It is like this in many countries now and hundreds of billions of dollars aren't going to change it, in fact it may accelerate the proccess. If you took the enire GDP of the US and spread it across the world in would amount to about $1700 per person but would that help?

Here are some figures.

The global GDP is about $8,200 per capita, $51 trillion.

To raise everyone to the standard of living in Britain it would cost $174.5 trillion.

They would need to consume 180 million barrels of oil per day. World production is 76 million per day. They would consume 9.2 tillion cubic metres of natural gas per year. World production is 2.6 trillion. They would consume 35 tillion kWh of electricity. world production is 14 trillion kWh.

So heres the deal. Cut back consumption in western nations to about a third of what they consume now. Raise the standard of living everywhere else to that level. Distribute the population more evenly across the planet to reduce local impact. Put limits on the number of children that can be born. Put limits on medical treatment to the elderly, handicapped, and those with congenital defects. Do all that and your just delaying what will happen for a few more years.

due to teh exponential nature of population growth, when teh end comes, it'll mostly likely be quick and messy.. that will be the end of civilization with a little c.. the end of Civilization with a big C wont happen for a very long time. humans, like any other animal have a nasty habit of being survivors since evolution has put those traits into us. it would take a rather severe catastrophe to wipe out everyone. ost likely, this would come after civilization has fragmented and a world sweeping disease runs its course rendering females sterile. why females? becuase rendering females inert is the most effective method of controling a population. a man can start teh reproduction cycle theoretically every day at least, a woman, once she being the cycle (ie getting knocked up) is out of the cycle for about 10-11 months (9 for the pregnancy, and 1-2 months for her monthly cycle to restart and body to be ready to do it over again in teh best case scenario).

I think the most likely scenario would be a Haemorragic Fever type virus, of which the Black Death was one. It wasn't the bubonic plague as a lot of people think. That is transmitted by rats and their fleas. The Black Death occurred in places where there were no rats. Iceland is one example. It had an incubation period of 37 to 40 days where it could be passed on without symptoms being apparent. So even back in 1347 it could travel a long way.The symptoms and transmission were most similar to the ebola virus. It depopulated Europe by about half and it took 150 years to repopulate to pre-plague levels.If it occurred today it would fuck the world over big-time. Think of the madness and paranoia of SARS and avian bird flu or whatever that was and multiply it by a lot.

Yep, the plague would be my bet. Human life originated in the rift valley area of Africa so why can't it's death?. Ebola and other nasties have turned up not so far away. There is no cure and interestingly outbreaks lasted for 9 months. Life and death and the whole damn thing.

The trouble with fast moving deadly plagues is that they tend to burn themselves out quickly. Another problem is that the diseases and the humans evolve to to co-exist. Third problem is that plagues do as much to build civilizations as destroy them. The Black Death that swept europe in the 14th century was responsible for the Renaissance in the 15th. By killing 75+ million people the survivors were faced with a world that had more available resources and that each person was more valuable. Also the survivors were stronger than the previous generations for being the survivors.

It just means a large community that works together and makes buildings, from what I see.

The ancient Egyptians are considered a civillization but that doesn't mean we think society should built giant pyramids for John Howard and worship the sun (Oh, wait us Aussies do that second one, but anyway).

And we certainly shouldn't make human sacrafices like those natives in South America did. But they were still civilized because they had buildings and a complex infrustructure to their community.

I will be sitting in a field just looking into the sky and trying to name what each cloud looks like when suddenly I fart into the ground, splitting the earth right down the middle. One half of the earth will float off into space and explode - hopefully the bit with Nodbugger on.

The other half will crash into the moon and join with it creating a new planet called Merth where everyone will be happy and have fun all the time.

I will warn the Zeekers in the affected regions that will be on the part that floats off into space - except for Noddy - and we will organise for them to come to our half so that they will survive and we can all have a happy planet for once. :D
