Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne!
Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!
We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu’d the gowans fine,
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot
Sin’ auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl’t in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin’ auld lang syne.
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere,
And gie’s a hand o’ thine,
And we’ll tak a right guid willie-waught
For auld lang syne!
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup,
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!

Our Lager,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed be thy drink,
Thy will be drunk,
At home as I am in the tavern.
Give us this day, our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillages,
As we forgive those who spill against us,
And lead us not into incarceration,
But deliver us from hangovers.
For thine is the beer,
the bitter and the lager,
For ever and ever,
Barmen

Happy new year?... Hopefully!.
It seems to me when looking back on this year that there is not much to make me think that the world has made a step forward in self improvement. All I see is death, suffering, destruction and terror. Looking back on this year we have heard and some may even have been effected by terrorism, natural disasters and war. Death and pain is all that I see, day in day out on the news and in my life, nothing inspiring and certainly nothing to give me hope for the new year as a new begining. The deaths of thousands caused by war and terrorism, only outdone by nature and over 130,000 thought to have been killed in the recent tsunami's. I cannot think of anything as a global society that has made all of this seem worth it.
Im having trouble saying what i really want to say but watching the end of year highlights on TV there is hardly any joy but numerous scenes of depravity, war, death, destruction in the name of political gain.
What is it that we have accomplished in this year besides death?.
I dont know exactly what it is but I cant help but feel a sense of hopelessness and fear for what is to come for all of us. I guess this is more of a rant than anything else, but It's just the way I feel after seeing those supposed 'highlights' of the year.

On New Year's Eve, the most common song for most English-speaking people to sing is "Auld Lang Syne." Isn't it funny how it's possible to sing and hear a song so many times and have no idea what it means? And wouldn't it be funny if it meant "Big Pink Elephants?"
A good sub-question is, what language is it?
It turns out that "Auld Lang Syne" is an extremely old Scottish song that was first written down in the 1700s. Robert Burns is the person whose transcription got the most attention, so the song is associated with him.
According to this page (http://people.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?parent=question279.htm&url=http://www.augustachronicle.com/stories/123199/cy2_124-4983.shtml), a good translation of the words "auld lang syne" is "times gone by." So (incorporating a couple of other translations) when we sing this song, we are saying, "We'll drink a cup of kindness yet for times gone by."
hope that helps
