I had a customer who couldn't connect to his dial-up connection on his iBook. His other machine (OS-8) worked fine, but the iBook wouldn't connect in OS-X or 9. I deleted the location and made a new one, totally forgetting that OS-X stores all network settings in the location.

Now he can't connect to his OS-8 machine. When he does "Connect to Server" I think it just says "AFP://...[hostname]" where [hostname] is the OS-8 hostname. When he clicks connect, it just gives an error straight away.

I use Samba at home on my (PC and Mac) network, and haven't a clue about AFP. Can anyone provide and suggestions on what I can do to get it working again?

Is AppleTalk turned on on the iBook?

AFP is the AppleTalk protocol so I think you may have to turn it on on the iBook before it will see the other Mac.

But I admit that I've not had the need to use AppleTalk either because I've just used Samba as well.

Yeap... Done some searching on Google Groups before I saw your reply. After enabling Appletalk in the Ethernet configuration it worked.

Customer was most greatful, but I still can't get him to connect to dial-up. The number is a MegaPOP number (ie, local from most locations in Australia) and it just won't connect. Will just say PPP connection failed... Check settings. I love Mac errors, so descriptive. His OS-8 machine can connect to this number fine, but the iBook won't, even if I change the startup disk and boot into OS-9.

It's running 10.2, so I suggested he take it to his brothers house, who has a broadband connection, and installed the OS and security updates. I'm thinking it's going to be some sort of incompatibility with his modem and exchange?

Hmmm that is a sticky wicket.

Are there any obscure settings under PPP Options that could be affecting things. Maybe scripted connection being ticked or something like that?
