It is a big call but do you think that I, Robot is as good a movie as Blade Runner.
Both come from classical books by excellent authors dealing with the subject of the nature of sentience and humanity.
The movie adaptations seem to be fairly faithful to the spirit of the books.

Regardless of the (im assuming) groupthink that I-Robot was bollocks, I thoroughly enjoyed that movie. I thought it had good pace and the storyline was pretty solid. Course, it was pretty much one huge advertisement... not like it bothered me really though. It's not like the future won't be that bad for advertisements or anything...
Blade runner, well, I haven't seen that in a LONG time, so I'll reserve judgement as to which is better after I've seen that again.

As has been mentioned many times before, I, Robot could've been made quicker if they just took out damn near everything and had the cast standing around the grave if Issac Azimoth (spelling?) and emptying their bladders, followed by his urine drenched corpse spinning out of his grave and achieving orbit.
Although bladerunner was alright, nothign special, but I had the misfortune of seeing the directors cut

I just finished reading i robot, unfortunately i could only buy a book which was plastered with will smith pictures on the cover.
The movie had nothing to do with the book at all, with the exception of the 3 laws of robotics and the names of a couple of the people nothing else was even remotely similar

Wasn't the book a collection of short stories about robots in the future?
The movie was just culled from all of them and stapled together in a way that would bring the punters in and leave them with the desire to purchase consumer goods at high high prices

Yes, it was an examination of unintended consequences of the 3 Laws of Robotics. Each story had robots failing in various ways entirely consistent with the 3 Laws.
One of my personal favourite books.

I haven't seen blade runner, but I think I, Robot was the most overrated film of the year. It was extremely disappointing.

i robot was good as an action sci-fi film that a chick could watch and enjoy as it wasnt too complicated to understand.
over all blade runner pretty much craps all over i-robot.

If you haven't seen blade runner you can't call yourself a geek. Period. Fullstop and kthxbye.
I robot is ok, but I think AI was better. I robot was the usual action formula, i felt I've seen the story a hundred times already. And what the fuck was up with the jet fly over at the end? stoopid. Blade Runner is fucking tops on the other hand.

Seriously...
Will Smith killed I, Robot... ffs.... I, Robot shouldn't have had been "Bad Boys III with robots" with Will "yo, I take your metal ass down, nigga G" Smith...
Shoulda starred Guy Pearce or some decent actor.

Wasn't the book a collection of short stories about robots in the future?
Book title "The Bicentenial man"
well. There may have been other robot short story compilations too, however thats the title that first comes to my mind at this hour when I should be sleeping.
I actually find "Do androids dream of electric sheep" rather ordinary, I can think of MANY Asimov stories that are superior. Roy Batty in the book is so.. ordinary. Its really a completely different work, almost unfair to compair it to its movie offspring. (shows you how far a good director can take an idea.)
I never saw "I, Robot" the movie. I saw the name "Will Smith" and ran screaming from the theatre, even though it was only a preview. Sort of a waste of $14.50 really.
Blade Runner: DC shits over all competiton in that genre.
as for whoever said "I unfortunately watched the directors cut", thats absolutely fucked. if your going to watch blade runner, DC is the only way to go. If thats too much for you to handle, well shit Im sure Bridgette Jones diary is now only $20 at HMV.

This is not a difficult question. Blade runner. Oh, GOD, blade runner.
That being said, I, Robot was a decent shit blows up movie. They should have called it, "the wonderful adventures of a famous black man with crappy shoes in explosion land. With robots." I am, however, happy with my decision to download it, rather than pay money.
While I once had respect for ye oh Hairyman, this thread just nullified that majorly. I was fully intending to go into full B&R style after seeing it, but scrapped that idea because I couldn't come up with the insults of the quality necessary to be able to.
On a side note, reading it did prompt me to dig through my dusty old box of links for one below which led me back to some sites I had completely forgotten about, so you are mostly forgiven for comparing one of the greatest Sci Fi movies of all time to a disgusting 115 minute marathon of product placements, originally known as Hardwired which had nothing to do with Asimov until after they got the rights five years later, at which time they gave the script a quick going over to insert Susan Calvin and as many Asimov snippets as they could into it to try and drag the sci fi buffs in.
If they didn't try and justify the movie as anything to do with Asimov then it could have been considered a decent movie, but the necrophilic mutilation and assraping of Asimov's corpse will forever stain this movie and leave it in the "too crap to wipe my ass with" pile.
Read the old link I dug up here. (http://www.revolutionsf.com/article.html?id=2174)

Ridley Scott is far superior director to Alex Proyas. I, Robot was a typical action movie whereas Blade Runner had some more depth in it. Ridley Scott is great in creating worlds and feeling in his movies.

I have only seen the directors cut as a wee tike. Well, parts of it anyway. I went to a friends place, it was already running, I got completely confused, it made no sense and did not fit in with the story I thought was meant to be there, I went and did other stuff.

Well it looks like making a few sleepy comments before going to bed certainly makes for a good (if not well considered on my part) argument. I was interested in the history of the movie, so thanks AntZ 9. It's been ages since I read either of the books. I was more interested in the differentation of human and automaton. There is some very interesting work in psychology that demonstrates some very in-grained behaviours in people who in certain circumstances have quite stereotyped behaviour while thinking all along that they are making free choices. There was plenty of the knuckle in both films as well as the usual gratiutous product placement. I quite like good industrial design, so I am reasonably interested in product placement as an art form - the Audi in I, Robot for instance, but the sneakers were rubbish. Like most films, or books for that matter themes are rarely fully explored, but the general skeltons of arguments were there. I agree that Blade Runner (directors cut) was the better film, although remembering Asimov's 3 laws of robotics brought back a lot about his work that I had forgotten. At least he wasn't a fascist like Heinlein.
Thanks for the thoughts.

I liked I, Robot, sure it wasn't really really cerebral but the effects were superb, Will Smith does an ok job and all in all it was entertaining.
Blade Runner got my vote because it includes all this but it's more of a 'thinker'

Why do people always carry on about how "the movie was nothing like the book its a travesty wah wah wah". Inspired by, based on, in honour of, a tribute to, an adaption of etc etc. IT DOESNT FUCKING SAY "THIS MOVIE IS MEANT TO BE JUST LIKE THE BOOK".
One of my dumbarse mates actually bags people out who like the LOTR movies simply because they were different to the books.
That said, I, Robot was an ok movie. Whereas Bladerunner is an icon of sci fi history. A fucking great movie.

Urban3300 you are SO RIGHT, I mean Dark City and The Crow were so devoid of intellect and were utter shit movies with no feeling or depth. pir8happy
Now that I have stopped being sarcastic, Alex it seems only really flourishes when he is allowed to help co-write the script instead of just directing it. I would have added Garage Days into that list, but I know that not everyone likes that movie as much as I do.

Product placement or realism? I'm not sure Coca-Cola would want to be included in such a grim place.... although in saying that the biggest Coca-Cola billboard I can think of is in the cross..... so it probably was product placement! heh.

Alex's a great director. Got to love The Crow and Dark City.
And as to the subject of which is better robot being human wise. Blade Runner hands down. I also agree the game was damn good too.

Blade Runner. I didnt even think this was CAPABLE of being a competition.
But Dune will always shit on both of them. The might David Lynch will never be beaten.... until I think of some movie i forgot about that kicks ass.

The difference: LOTR followed the books pretty closely - bits were altered to make the movie watchable within a human lifespan, but the basic story was kept pretty true to form. I, Robot on the other hand had the same title. The END. It was a stolen title on a movie with robots and ads.
Had Bladerunner the movie been all about an ice-skating android trying to make it in the professional circuit and finding love, maybe there might be a comparison. As it stands I, Robot was a piece of action fluff.

still only seen blade runner once, and it was the directors cut, when i had questions about it, things i didnt get, i was told, oh this meant that, its from the book, oh this answer this which was in the non directors cut... wtf sure of there's alot of depth and whatever but i do feel its a pretty weak aspect that one version wont fully stand on its own.
example in th DC the Unicorn dream, its utterly pointless seeing unless you've seen the non dc you dont know that replicants have that dream implanted.
Hahahahaha Blade Runner vs I, Robot? You've got to be kidding.

My thoughts exactly. You can't beat Blade Runner plus it didn't need flashy effects to be cool. It had the FORD and flying cars!

Comparing Blade Runner to I, Robot is like comparing a porno to a swim suit catalogue. No fucking competition.
I Robot isn't really that bad, but its no comparison. Blade runner actually has an atmosphere. The soundtrack is fantastic, and the plot leaves you guessing. I Robot entertains but it doesn't really get you thinking.
