How many one nighters/fuck buddies Vs serious relationships?
7 for me. Four serious Vs three floozies
And for the hell of it, how many people have you almost fucked, but never did for various reasons (moral dilemma, lack of contraceptive, ghastly stench)?

edit again: i met my current fiance just after the incident mentioned above, also when i was 16 and we didnt consumate our relationship until we was 18.

i've slept with 2 people (both serious relationships).
i'm not into the one night stands/flings for various reasons - moral reasons mainly. personally, i could never enjoy it because it would be either me being used, me using someone else, or a both (and i dont' like the idea).
sex is something i take seriously and means a lot to me, and is not something i just do for the sake of it... it's not something i do to get someone to like me or want to be with me, i don't do it because it is expected of me... i know of girls who sleep with guys to boost their self-esteem which is really sad... they can't see they are disrespecting themselves...
Depending on your definition, 3 or 4.
First was a 1 year on/off relationship where I was not allowed to use the aforementioned 'R' word.
Second and third were short term with a view that closed. Second is the only one that I don't still keep in contact with.
Fourth was the cause of a very angsty thread of mine on here and a fortnight of feeling like shit - he was the 'depends how you define it'. Oddly enough out of that we became really good friends and I see him pretty much every day.
Never had a one-nighter, never been particularly driven to. Basically I'm too chaste and moral (HA!) and therefore do not get roots :(

Agreed there rin. I don't view sex as some holy mystical thing, but on the other hand it is something that's personal and intimate so I wouldn't be comfortable with doing it just because it feels like a good idea at the time - having sex with someone is not like buying a pair of shoes, although I think unfortunately more people are viewing it like that these days.

you are making it sound like its such a immoralistic thing to do. but as was said in the other thread its a humans basic need. people are people. let them do their own thing, and dont judge them on how many people they have had sex with, or whether they were in loving long term relationships. if they dont feel used afterwards- great for them - dont make them feel like they did something wrong.

I wasn't saying it's *bad* thing to do, I was saying that it's unfortunate that it seems to be becoming a societal trend (i.e, more people are doing it that way). If it works for some people, that's great, more power to them, I know some people like that who have healthy loving relationships. But I don't think it's something that works for everyone, and for some people, like rin said, the act will lose some of its meaning. And I know people in that category too.

a further 13 of these are people I still talk to on a regular basis. The rest were one-nighters, people who didn't fulfill initial promise (ie, I thought we'd get on well, but I was wrong), people who moved to england/the US shortly thereafter
3 of my 4 closest friends are on that list of 13 - the 2 I had serious relationships with I see only rarely.

Personally, I think sex with someone you love is way better anyway.

i think the fact that it is no longer linked to the church (think about it, you were frowned upon for sex outside of marriage - church) allows people more freedom. but people who have sex, openly and freely, dont tend to go around extolling the virtues. its only those that are abstaining, or waiting for marriage that go around saying that those who dont wait, are sinners.
i personally dont want other peoples views forced upon me. i dont mind either way (more or less etc), just let me make up my own mind, and if you dont approve, you can just bugger off. because frankly, its not your decision to make or influence.

That's called playing the devil's advocate which oddly enough is the phrase that was running through my head just a few moments ago.
If you're not letting your views be influenced by other people, then that's great, you get to do what works for you. As I said before though, society as a whole is changing and therefore people might feel like they should be acting in a certain way or doing certain things because it's 'normal', even if they don't feel comfortable with it. But I guess it's always been that way, the targets just change.

As you can probably guess from my post above, I've no clue what the "meaning" of sex is - or rather, I am familiar with not *specific* meaning of sex.
Some of the meanings I am familiar with are:
* It's a lazy way to orgasm - get someone else to do the work while you lie there and moan
* It's a bit more fun than just getting yourself off by hand
* It's a nice way to cheer yourself up
* It's a nice ego boost - can you think of anything more flattering than "That was the best sex ever!"?
* It's a nice thing to do for a friend who needs cheering up
* It's a great way to express close you feel to someone
* It's a great way to fill in a saturday night when all three commercial stations are playing the same bloody concert
* It's also a very big part of making love to that one special person in your life
Did you mean any of these meanings? Do you have other meanings that I might not be aware of?

The meaning of it, I imagine, is different for everyone. There's no need to be facetious about it. For me, it means expressing feelings for someone that I am very close to, but obviously it doesn't have to mean that for everyone.

Agreed. I've never had random sex with anyone unless everyone involved understood that it was random sex and was okay with that. Quite aside from the ethical issues, I'd rather not have people I've slept with hate me afterwards - so unless their expectations match my expectations, I'd rather skip the sex and do something that will make us both happy instead
Personally, I think sex with someone you love is way better anyway.

everyone has their own opinion and so do i. it just seems that people like me are often in the minority in today's society (and yes, the church has influenced that). our moral views are not the "norm" anymore. it often makes it difficult to discuss topics like this one.

There seems to be a bit of emotion coming out in the area of casual sex. People should de-stress a little about the topic. Casual sex works for some people, doesn't work for others. If it works, go do it, have fun, enjoy yourselves. If it doesn't, then stick to relationships, and only have sex when you are ready.

Managed to hook up a one nighter for the first time a few weeks back. I tend to go for relationships coz it's just my style. I don't really like being single. I suck at picking up really, that's the biggest problem i have.
So to go into a little more detail:
2 that i've loved, one was a good kind of happy together love and the other was the trully, madly deeply kind (after which i haven't been able to put myself on the line again)

As pauly says about casual sex vs relationship sex, do what is right by you, but don't judge others choice. I never used to think i could do the casual thing, but after time out of a relationship and having gone out with people i didn't end up in love with it seems i can. Wow I thought my 2.5-year stint of celibacy was bad (no I wasn't locked up, I was pregnant for 9 months and celibate by choice for the rest :p) ...that's over now thanks to an interlude with a sexy ex and I'm up to around 12 months again hehe...could be more though, how time flies! I deliberately did it, cause i needed to get myself back under control.
I had it on my mind too often, and did the deed far too often.... it was controlling my life instead of me controlling my urges.
But i am not upset that i broke the celebacy for i think i have my urges under controll now....... well i do hope so anyways, otherwise the last couple of weeks will have opened up the flood gates once more.
