I think we absolutely need a theme - its hard to compare apples...... and donkeys

Yeah I agree, just the last themed one didn't work out too well. I guess it was the holiday season and stuff, now we are getting back into the swing of things maybe people will have more time and desire. Hmm.

Nice shots... Absolut almost got my vote, pity about the sharpness... the only minus to the shot. Great colours!

I forgot to send in my entry!
SHITE... and I had a good one too.. -_-;
edit: fuck it... here it is anyway, not eligible for voting, but tell me what you think. Taken at an Australia Day do, at Tin's Hall in Tennoji, Osaka.
Good shots guys.
With regard to themes, may I suggest that people simply nominate themes in this (or perhaps another) thread. Then StygiaN (seeing as its his baby) can pick 5 or 6 of the best for the rest of us to vote on. The most popular becomes the next theme.
At least thats how other photography sites I visit seem to do it.
Thoughts?

Thats a cool shot...and would've got my vote...especially since there was a bit of an 'OZ' theme!
T
I don't want to compromise the vote or anything, but as cool as the person might be who took that last shot, I can't bring myself to understand how it had four votes opposed to the rest. These long exposure shots can be done by anyone, they just happened to pull the camera back down before the shutter closed. No offense to the person who took it. I can say it's better than the second one that was submitted (Democles') because it actually has some sort of orginization, but to my eye they both just look like long exposures with camera movement. Maybe I'm just wrong about it, I'd like to hear a defense! Some of the other shots are pretty cool stuff. Absolut ice looks like a modern artpiece. :D

It uh... took 5 shots to get it 'just right'. Took it with my Casio QV-R51 Digital and if I moved too much then it was too much of a blur. Compounded with the fact that this particular camera isn't an SLR- so no audible cues to tell me when the shutter had finally closed.
Upped the colour sensitivity setting on the camera, otherwise it was too faded because of the long-ish exposure.
'Sides.. I thought the composition of the shot was pretty good. ^_^
Hehe I'm sorry, I really don't mean to sound harsh at all man, and don't let it discourage you, I'm sure you've taken some cool shots, it's just since I took so so so many dark club shots (I was the photographer for my friend's band for a while) I've seen so many shots like this maybe it's desensitized me. I kept a few of them that i'd done that I thought came out in a unique way, but for the most part they all looked alike. :D I promise I'm not a bastard! hehe

damn, mis-voted :(
Meant to go Entry 5 - Park at Own Risk but hit Entry 6 - Generic Originality instead (but both are good)
Man, I'm racking my brain trying to work out who shot that Chicago pic ;)

Though there are some great shots there, I think that blur can sometimes be over done.
Saying that though, I was damn impressed with the Drunk one and got second in my mind.

Sometimes I wish I could see the results before I vote so I could go for the underdog.
I would be interested in finding out how some of them were done, when the voting is all over.

really? *snff* :D
It's all good. Actually the opposite - it was the first time I tried that. Most of the shots I have with that camera are macro, or in-focus stills. I'm still new at this. :P
Well hell yeah, keep experimenting with the shutter speeds and stuff (if you can with that particular cam) and even if you can't it's cool to mess around with it. Apparently a majority of the people here like those shots a lot, so I might just be desensitized to them or something! Keep on shooting and stuff, we need to make a large photographer base here at zgeek so I don't have to go anywhere else to have my photos criticized. :D

Is it over? I have some questions if people dont mind.
Chicago dusk - How come all the cars headlights and street lights are on but it still looks dark? Its like you captured the light at its source but they arent casting light on anything. (if you get what i mean) What sort of settings did you use to kill glare and stuff?
Absolut Ice - Where did you find all that vodka?
Cleared to land and A little bit drunk - How long did you have the shutter speed set to, and why cant I make out the plane at the end of the lights? Is it Wonder Womans invisible jet?:D
I liked all of the pics, peoples creativity seems to come out more when they have no restrictions on the subject matter. It does make it hard to pick between them though.

Hi
My pic was the little bit drunk one. It was actually a random shot that I thought looked pretty cool. I had a BBQ at my place and got the camera out, hoping to catch something that looked cool for the comp and well, it looked ok. I didn't have much else that month :(
The shot was actually taken on auto mode without any change to the camera settings. Whatever it comes on when you turn it on. Let me check exif info.
Exposure time was 1 sec, f/2.8 aperture.
We got very drunk that night ;)

ps. congrats on winning the comp Hippy ;) I'll try and get pirate to donate you some rep ;)

Sweet thanks dude.:D
I am going to try some of these long exposure shots. My front veranda looks down towards the airport and the planes fly almost straight over the house sometimes. Thought I might try it with a train from a bridge too and a shot similar to yours in my bar room with some of my mates as well.
So far I have only mucked around with very fast shutter speeds to capture birds flying and whatnot but now its time to go the other way I think.
Thanks to the voters and other entrants as well ;). It was pretty close this month.
Nice job Hippy, awesome shot :D
As for me, I took "Chicago Dusk" (A lot of people figured this out early just because I'm into photography and have taken many shots of the area.) It was taken with a relatively short exposure time (1/250 second) and at F/8, but there was more than enough light to come out decently. The sun had JUST sunk behind that steeple back there and I figured it'd be a nice shot, so I not only got the fading away of the sun (the graduation of colors toward the back of the photo) but the lights in the cars looked good as well. Kind of a view on the blending of the beauty of nature and the city.
Maybe we should start another thread since this isn't taking off horribly fast. I'd like to know more about the other entrant's stuff.
Also I have to pimp my website....it's kind of mandatory. Find my other stuff at http://www.aphotoblog.tk (I'm pathetic) :D
Also, here are a few shots that might be the reason i'm desensitized to long shutter speeds in dark places...hehe..I experimented with it a LOT and have really large amounts of them in the archives.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/Coheedcollapse/EricTrail.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/Coheedcollapse/BongoLongshut.jpg
More where those came from, but I don't wanna clutter the place up too much. :D
Also, I'd really like to hear how exactly Absolut Ice was made. I can tell it was a light display or something....but that's about as far as I can see...was it a long exposure or was it just lit up more than I can tell?

i didnt have time to enter as i had way too much shit going down last month, but you can expect my entry this month.
i voted for absolut and was absolutely sure it would win, but im always suprised on what the populus does. it seems a bit out of focus and has lots of bleed but i liked the composition and the colours.
macros are becoming ever popular with voters and technically number 6 is better than 5 id have to say, funny how subject seems to be winning these comps.
entry 1 i also liked but theres too much contrast between the buildings and the sunset, you need more light on the buildings as they are just too dark.
entry 2 lacks subject and framing, colours are a bit washed also.
entry 4 would be my 2nd favourite, excellent colour and is framed nicely, if it displayed more movement it would have finished higher.
crap comments from someone who didnt enter, but well done to mr vindaloo and bring on the next comp.
entry 7 is a great long exposure, and kyle has already commented on 8 (sorry stygian)

Mine was entry 2. I literally ran out of time and took the photo in 5 minutes with very little imagination. I had been meaning to do something good but I got very busy all of a sudden and I wouldn't have entered at all but for a PM from stygian asking me to, and I figured that something is better than nothing. The photo is actually a re-creation of a photo I took last year that I had as my desktop wallpaper for a while. It's definitely an atmosphere piece and probably works better when viewed in my room on my desk - without that context it is pretty crap. I shall endeavour to put a bit more effort into February's comp.

Cleared to land - How long did you have the shutter speed set to, and why cant I make out the plane at the end of the lights? Is it Wonder Womans invisible jet?:D
I think the shutter speed on that shot was around 15-18 seconds (at f/7.1).
The reason you can't see the plane at the end (or at all for that matter) is because it's not a light source, and had very little like reflecting off of it and didn't stay in one place long enough. In some shots, you can see the landing gear and a little bit of the fuselage everytime the beacon light on the bottom went off, but it's pretty faint.
entry 1 i also liked but theres too much contrast between the buildings and the sunset, you need more light on the buildings as they are just too dark.
For one I agree with you totally on the comment about Absolut Ice, it was a really nice shot.
Secondly, I submitted that shot in a hurry and I've already corrected that on my computer version. :D

I'm going to give these type of shots a go, thanks for the info dude.
Everyone must have rushed thier shots this month. I was rushing around the yard on the second last day looking for inspiration myself.

Ya, play around with it.
It's kind of a trade off between the light from the plane and the surrounding light. At first I was shooting at a smaller aperture to get a longer exposure, but the streaks weren't that well defined.
