I made a very very exciting discovery today. While I was madly rushing from one place to the next I stumbled across this bookshop in the Anzac Square Arcade which sold nothing but sci-fi/fantasy and crime/mystery books and novels. I saw it through the window and came to a dead stop, just dying to go inside, but my workmates wouldn't let me because we were late for a training session.

After the session we were waiting for taxi, so I sneak into the shop... It's an absolute gold mine! Fantasy novels by everyone... And they had full sets of everything, none of this having ten copies of the last book and nothing else. There were authors there that I hadn't read or heard of before with series upon series of books. The prices weren't that bad either.

Has anyone ever been there? The guy (owner?) was very nice. He seemed to know everyone who entered that shop (except me) while I was there. He also informed me on the high level of theft of Terry Pratchett books, which is why I couldn't find their's at first. It was in front of the counter.

I only wish I had more time to look around. Next time....

Yeah its pretty awesome hey. I buy all my fantasy/sci fi books there. I don't get how anyone could steal things in there though, the shop is absolutely tiny.

What kind of nerd steals books, man? That's one heinous motherfucking nerd crime right there.

Do they have anything from Richard A. Knaak?

Especially concerning his Dragon Realms books?

I need three more to complete my collection, but they are a bitch to find as most of them are out of print.

I don't think the nerds are doing the stealing. The guy said that "young boys" are stealing the Pratchetts and selling them to second hand book stores, pocketing the $. I asked why the bookstores don't notice this, as there is no way a fan would sell a Pratchett book. He then adds the obvious: that the books are in new condition with price tags. Apparently they don't care, as they pay $2.50 or so for the books and can sell it for a hell of a lot more.

So if anyone is wondering, that is why many bigger (often inner city) bookstores will keep their Discworld books near the counter.

I can't remember! I was on a flying visit - I had a taxi waiting outside and only managed to find Discworld's Sourcery...

Oh, but a fine score nevertheless.... nothing like the 8th son of an 8th son of an 8th son....

.....and here's poor me, sitting at work yesterday, madly doing what it is that I do (sorting out shitfights essentially so people get what they want), and I get a text message. And bearing in mind Arsozah and I both come from the more northern (a geographical location that seems to preclude anything but an A&R or QBD selling books) parts of this fine country, I nearly fell off my chair when I read there was a sci fi-fantasy bookshop in town. Starting plotting how it was I could get out of the freakin office and dissappear (unfortunately I have no luggage, dragon or beserker to come to my rescue).

So there you go. Saturday Arsozah, you and I.... book store. And how.

...and as for little assfaces stealing pratchett of fans who will willing pay for and treasure said books.... theirs will be a long and repetitive journey through lives which will both suck and bite all at once. Thank the good lord for karma (contradiction intended, hence the absense of proper noun usage).

Well, it's taken a while, but Manshoon and I went for a foray to the shop today.

It's quite cool... it had a book that I haven't been able to find anywhere else but ShinyMetalASS's bookcase. It had some very nice 21st Anniversary Discworld editions. They don't carry as much as they could in stock, but are quite happy to order. While we were at the counter I could see some very interesting looking things that had come in for customers. I just want to browse through them for a while.

But we also went to Borders, where this small town girl has never been. Wow. That's quite a cool place. Manshoon found a box set of R A Salvatore's Paths of Darkness series (all 4 books) for $50. So I bought it. I've never read him before, but both Manshoon and Shiny assure me it's very good.

All in all I came home with 6 new books (cheating really, 4 were in one box set) even though I have no money and shouldn't have been buying books. I keep telling myself this, but can't wipe the smile off my face and can't decide what to read first so I've just got them all lined up on the top of the bookcase so I can look at them all pretty....

Of course, my little success was nothing compared to ShinyMetalASS's. But I'll let her tell everyone about that....

Indeed it was a good trip....I still came away empty handed (except for a Red Dwarf series V DVD). If only the new Salvatore book would come out in Paperback so I can get it and read it.....damn me and my paperback buying ways.
