Ricoh Caplio R1
My parents bought one late last year and it is very cool. I think it is the fastest compact digital camera on the market and it has very good battery life and it is strong and reliable and takes good pictures.

Don't forget to factor in memory cards, spare battery, camera bag etc into your price.

Personnaly I like Canons or Nikons, but thats just me. Sony make some nice cameras but the memory cards are more expensive.

Good luck.

It depends on what you want it for, if your wanting to travel around with it your best off getting something portable, I used a Nikon 5200 (5.1MP) the other day and it was a great camera. You would be looking at around $600 for it, I'm sure there are places that sell it cheaper though.

It all comes down to what you need it for in the end, for travel I use my Sony Cybershot (3.2MP) because it's small, good battery life, good auto mode. Then when I want to do some real photography stuff I use my Nikon 8700 or D70.

I have yet to venture to Canon yet, but from some of the stuff I've seen they look to be bloody good cameras!

you may want to consider a waterproof surround and you can even do some underwater shots. i think sony do them with the cybershots, not sure of other ones.

when in doubt, buy nikon.
