View Full Version : Sympathetic soldier brings Iraqi boy home
MAUSTON, Wis. -- When Capt. Scott Southworth took his soldiers to a Baghdad orphanage in 2003 to befriend the children, a small boy with cerebral palsy immediately returned the favor, crawling across the floor to sit next to him.
"By the time we left that first day, he was trying to take off my watch or to do anything he could to keep me from leaving the orphanage," Southworth said.
More than a year later, Southworth has made a return trip to Iraq and brought 11-year-old Ala'a back to Wisconsin, where Southworth now works as a district attorney.
Iraqi law won't allow Southworth to adopt Ala'a, but he was able to bring the boy home last month under a "humanitarian parole" that lets him make sure the boy gets medical care and goes to school.

Overly generalised.
Yes, fundamentalist muslim culture often requires women to wear a burka, but this is by no means a hard and fast rule for all muslims. The use of the terms "slave" and "owner" are completely incorrect, the behaviour stems from very strict guidelines as to what is right & proper.

I don't know. I know a woman who married an Egyptian Muslim. She wasn't treated badly. I suppose he wasn't hard line though. I don't know how many of these hardliners there are either.
Do you think they look at us and wonder at the women over here plastering themselves in make up becaue our society leads them to believe that the best way to succeed is to be attractive? Do you think they find it bizarre that some women feel the need to go to such lengths that they have surgery performed to insert objects into their bodies or have bits removed so they feel more desirable to men? Do you think they'd find this bodydysmorphia as well as others such as anorexia and bulemia undesirable in their own culture. Do you think that they find it bizarre that we allow so many incidents of rape to happen in our cultures because of the way we promote the sexuality of women?
Don't get me wrong, I like the look of an attractive woman too, but I also realise I've been brought up in a different culture to them.

Looks to me like the "Muslim World" is not the Middle East, and in fact does include all Muslims.
So what really is the "Muslim World"?
"What is the Muslim World?
There are an estimated 1.2 billion Muslims in the world. The Organization of Islamic Countries has 55 member states. The ten countries with the largest Muslim population are: Indonesia (170.3 million), Pakistan (136 million), Bangladesh (106 million), India (103 million), Turkey (62.4 million), Iran (60.7 million), Egypt (53.7 million), Nigeria (47.7 million) and China (37.1 million). Of these countries only Egypt is an Arab country. Most Arabs are Muslims, but most Muslims are not Arabs. "

The Middle East is a loose term, not always used to describe the same territory. It usually includes the Arab countries from Egypt east to the Persian Gulf, plus Israel and Iran. Turkey is sometimes considered part of the Middle East, sometimes part of Europe. Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh are usually described as South Asia. "

i would suggest that the area has been fought over for more than 2000 years, perhaps even 3500.
but the reasons are not all to do with religious control over jerusalem.
there is also the strategic factor: israel/palestine/canaan is basically right in the middle of europe, north africa and the middle east/far east.
so when any empire, be it persian, roman, greek, assyrian, egyptian, babylonian, ottoman, or mongolian wants to rule the known world, they have to pass through (and conquer) the land in question.

"Everything happened in the middle east. So why wouldn't the focal point of those religions be the middle east?"
But that's not what you said Noddy, you said the middle east was the muslim world.
So, which is it?!? The focal point of religions (note the 's' as there is more than one religion you are referring to) OR the muslim world.
The middle east is the Muslim world. That is where Islam started that middle east is what people think of when they hear Muslims.

Even discounting religions like Jedi (oh, does anyone know if enough people put it down for it to become an official religion?)
Sadly, I don't think so.
Not everyone can go, but the main pilgrimage for the 3 religions is located somewhere in the middle east.
And no, I never said all religions, Learn to read.
And it is a pilgrimage for all religions.
Please don't try and argue differently. it is there, plan as can be. Maybe I should quote it again for you?

No... when someone says "Arab" the image of an Arab guy in the desert springs to mind. When someone says "Muslim" the image I most closely associate with is of an Indonesian woman in a headscarf.

This is bullshit! Just because they might have originated there, doesn't mean that area is known as the "Muslim" or "Christian" world.
When i think of Christians... i think of right winged extremist yanks in the bible belt of america!
When i think of Muslims, i think of the 200 million people in Indonesia.
Obviously you have been brain washed to think that propaganda!
"Terrorists = Muslims = Middle East = Lets Blow it Up!"

Or a Malaysian woman with a headscarf...
I have seen Muslim women (I have noticed women more than men due to the fact that muslim women are easier to notice due to their head dress) in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. These are MY images.
Honestly Noddy, everyone has different images and thoughts why can't you see that?!?!

No I am not wrong. Islam started in the middle east, therefor the Muslim world is generally considered the middle east. Another reason is when someone says Muslims you think Arab guy in the desert.
On this part... Buddhism started in India, but Buddhist world is not in India. Could it be also in this case, yes?
I doesn't matter if they go there. It is a pilgrimage that many take. And it is a pilgrimage for all religions. I don't think it ever mentions the Vatican in the bible, BECAUSE IT DIDN'T EXIST YET! The Vatican is something man did.
Um, at the time the Bible was written, Catholicism didn't exist either.

People, forget about argueing with Nodbugger. I'll enlighten you all on the reason why he thinks Muslim World = Middle East.
There is a reason why the word "WORLD" is in the "Muslim World". To all of us, it means ALL the Muslims in the WORLD. To Nodbugger, the Middle East.
Now lets sidetrack abit and ask, where is the WORLD. To most of us, it is the sum of all countries in the WORLD (Earth). To Nodbugger...
America.
Arguements are futile.

Problem is, if you want to refer to Italy, you say "ITALY", not Italian world. Same for China. And again, same for Middle East. If people wanted to refer to the Middle East, they will say "MIDDLE EAST", not Muslim World, because Muslim World represents everyone practising the faith in the world, not just the middle east.
So based on your obviously flawed logic:
The "world" = Africa (because it is still believed they are the cradle of civilization)
English world = England
Democratic world = Greece
anything else, anywhere but America. Why? Because America never started anything great!

The top 3 are Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Not in that order. I know Buddhism are right around there, they may have a larger population. But the 3 I am talking about are the 3 most recognizable.

3 most recognizable by WHOM? By the "world"? Which in your case, "world" equals Americans. I'm sorry to break it to you that Judaism isn't much recognized or well known in my part of the world. And being in Asia, that is a pretty big part of the world. The 3 biggest religion in the world (in this case, the WORLD is NOT america) are christianity, islam and hinduism.

Did I say biggest? No. I said most recognizable.
If you would show all those religions main symbols to groups of 13 year olds from around the world, the majority of the time Judaism, Christianity, and Islam would come out first.
And yes, Everyone knows the Jews. Simply because 2 billion Christians and 1.2 Billion Muslims are pretty knowledgeable in Judaism from their own religion.

wait, you've confused me here. What do you mean they will come out first?
At the end of the day what you are saying is a load of tosh to be honest. It all depends on a number of factors, not least intellligence. So while most Americans may know them 3 religions more, i really dont think you can speak for the world.

I'll go through this simply then.
If the two most populace religions (Christianity and Islam) were derived from what I said was third. Then that means you have a couple billion people who know what the third is along with what it is basically about. There are not many people out there who don't know Moses or what the Star of David looks like, but how many average people could tell me about Hinduism?
