Drink spiking has become such a problem in clubs/pubs these days. I have been working in clubs as a security guard for around 24 months now and have seen so many cases where peoples drinks have been spiked, it's just wrong. I would say in the past 6 months it has become far more dangerous as the types of drugs being used can not only affect you in the short term but cause your reproductive organs to stop working for the rest of your life.

I have seen so many cases of the after effects of drink spiking but have never caught anyone in the act of spiking. It is near impossible to detect, even looking at CCTV camera footage it is to hard to see what has happened. One big problem with drink spiking is that in many cases it's the people you're out with that spike you - to watch you go wild, loose control all for a laugh, but what many don't understand is that when certain types of drugs are mixed with alcohol they have can have very dangerous and sometimes fatal side effects.

I know when I go out I will always be cautious, always keeping that extra eye out and watching not only the drinks but your mates that your out with, it can only take a couple of minutes for the effects of a drug to kick in and before you know it your friend could be walked out of the club with some random wanker and god only knows what could happen to them. When we do safe drinking promotions in clubs we are all given post-it style notes that read 'Your drink has just been spiked!' we are to keep an eye out for unattended drinks and put this label on them. It gives people a good idea that they should never leave their drinks unattended - not even for a couple of seconds!

Sorry to hear about your girlfriend Sodapop hope she is alright. Did you report it to the authorities and licensee of the club/pub you were at? (if you were at one that is). If you do this, then the authorities will take the appropriate steps to minimising future risks.

Interesting muga. Will there come a day come when clubs will enforce body searches on patrons for suspicious substances before letting them into the premises?

Either that or selling smaller servings of drinks so patrons can skull their drinks.

I've heard some places have started to add stuff to drinks that changes colour when any of the known drugs are put into them. Although this is just something I heard from some random people, so I can't vouch for how accurate it is.

Yes it's true, there is a substance that is added to drinks now that changes to a bright colour when certain drugs are added, so far it only works on a small number of drugs often used in drink spiking, it's got a long way to go but at least it's a start. One other method being trialled works similar to the first method but when a drug is added to a drink rather than the drink changing colour the cup glows green. It is real easy to spot for both staff and other patrons - it is just a matter of educating people that the cup is not a novelty but an indicator that your drink has been spiked. It still has a long way to come before it would be released for use in licensed venues.

Only one method has been effective with drink spiking and that has been the police with drug dogs walking around. It has caught out many people who are carrying drugs on them with or without the intention to drink spike someone. One problem with it is that they will detect people who have had an illegal drug up to 7 hours prior and not holding anything at all.

Some venues already conduct searches on people with wands - this is not for drugs but weapons. It has not been very effective at all, it causes more problems than it prevents. Searches for drugs would be pointless as you could never possibly search everyone for them, that's why there are cameras and guards always looking out for suspicious behaviour. Once cameras with thermal vision become cheaper then there is one way you can see everything, many drugs give off a unique frequency that is able to be detected by thermal imagery. It is a method that customs has been using for a long time now and has proved to be a highly effective method of detecting drugs.

Anyway, this kind of shit is severely fucked up. I've had a couple of friends that have had issues with this, and its just fucking scary.

One of my friends didn't drink the whole drink, but one minute she's in a bar in the casino and the next thing she knows she's vomiting in a bathroom while some stranger is holding her hair, while security is outside.

She ended up in hospital overnight, and was bedridden for a couple of days afterwards.

If you can't get laid because you've got a small penis, get chicks the old fashioned way and buy a fucking convertible. What's the point of fucking someone who's out of it? You may as well fill a blow-up doll with warm water and rut with that. Its cheaper, safer, and should your mates ever find out they'll just laugh at you rather than beat the living shit out of you.

If I ever caught anyone spiking a drink, I'd probably flip out ninja style. Its just fucking low. I don't care how desperate you are. Hire a hooker or something.

The problem with searching people is that the most common drugs used are prescription sedatives, so that anyone caught in possession could argue that they were for their own use. About a year ago, the manufacturers added a blue dye to Rohypnol, then the most common drink spiking drug, so that it could easily be seen when added to a drink. All of the colourless Rohypnol was withdrawn and destroyed. However it might still be hard to see in a dark coloured drink in a dimly lit nightclub.

There is no drug you can take that will make you permanently sterile, if there were people wouldn't need surgery for that. There's a *theoretical* risk yes, but it's very very low.

Having said that I also know some people who had their drinks spiked recently. My dad actually was the victim of a drink-spiking incident about 30 years ago but he kept it together enough to get home before anything bad happened. I think he developed encephalitis shortly after though.

Had it happen to good mate out in Adelaide one night, he was so fucked up we had to take turns in watching him. Got him home eventually and he spewed all over a rug and passed out not remembering what happened the next day.
What I don't understand is that he does more drugs than anyone I know, and basically has worked his way through the list and that night he only had a little Revvy and didn't even drink much. What drugs are people using to spike?

I don’t have any knowledge about these drugs and Cassa said it's Theoretical so really it's nothing to worry about.

But if there is a "real" small risk then it has happened to some one and will happen to some one else… the laws of probability!! It shits me when Dr’s say small risk but it’s nothing to worry about it…..... Mainly because they say that and it usually happens to me!

I concur - it is an urban myth that commonly makes the email rounds and has made it's way into popular culture as simplistic reinforcement of the fact that spiking drinks is wrong.

She is fine. Just a bit ill feeling. Recovering and stuff. Apparently its not uncommon for there to be a couple of days of illness afterwards.

If you ever catch someone in the act of drink spiking then by all means tell the bar staff, security & duty manager of the club, one sure way of getting the attention drawn to you is simply start belting in to the bastards face, this generally works real well - just make sure you let security know the reason why you did it while you and him are both being held. It is treated as one of the most serious incidents that can happen on licensed premises and the law will come down on them like a ton of bricks (not to mention the giant coconut bouncers).

Chances are if you were able to see the spiking take place then CCTV cameras would be able to see it also - keep the drink there so it is able to be used as evidence as that is one thing that is often done is the offender will knock the drink over if they are caught and once it hits the floor then no test can be conducted that will be of any use as it could have become contaminated by a substance that was on whatever it is the drink got spilt on.

I had my drink spiked on my 21st birthday. I was among friends so no bastard had the chance to do anything, but the effects of the drug were horrible.
I couldn't walk, I was literally carried outside by one of my male friends and the other one had my handbag, we walked past bouncers, police, groups of males no one said a word excpet for a hearty "have a good night fellas"

I had no idea what the fuck was going on and I blacked out completely for 20 mins and apparently stopped breathing..... not fucking nice.

I have a pretty good idea who it was, but they have migrated up to sydney.

The thing about drugs like Rohypnol is that traces of them stay in the blood for a pretty short time, and only slightly longer in urine. If for instance you wake up battered, bruised and think your assault was helped along by having your drink spiked, the quicker you report it, the greater the chance there is of drug traces still being found.

I've had it happen to me too...with a 'friend' from work when I popped around to his house. He had met my boyfriend a few time before and just said that we were going to pop to his place so that he could get changed before heading out. He gave me a drink and the next thing I knew I was waking up on the couch with him groping me. It was extremely lucky that the situation wasn't any worse!

I managed to squawk out that he had to call me a cab or drop me home that instant and avoided anything worse happening. Then, Monday at work he told everyone that when I told my boyfriend, that my ex broke into his car. I told him that if he was sure that's what happened, perhaps he should ask for the surveillance tapes as the work garage has cameras and a security guard - he shut up after that!

Apparently, more often than not, it is someone you know...

There is also a similar device used, its a special coaster which is able to detect most rape drugs, including GBH. I know this because I have met the guy who actually invented the things when I was doing work experience with my dad, who was then the head of the Australian Forensic Drug Laboratory (AFDL) at the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories in Pymble.

I saw this happen on friday night... the stupid cunt wouldnt take the hint and fuck off and leave her alone and it was only after i got the attention of a bouncer (then 10) in a circle around him that they convinced him to leave. She completely lost her memory and didnt know why she was in hospital or getting injected with anything when we got her there, and was absolutely terrified. She had to be tied down to the bed and has needed to sleep for almost 2 days to get over it. The good news is the fucker will probably be caught and if he doesnt get a nice long term for it, 10 angry aj's will be knocking on his door.
