I had an odd experience today with two rechargeable batteries. My girlfriend moved the rechargeables and two earrings in a heap onto her bed, 2 minutes later smoke was coming from the blanket. One battery was extremely hot and the other was normal temperature. As far as she could see the batteries were on either end of one earring that had warped out of shape.
What I was wondering is what might have caused this to happen?. The Bedspread does cause some static but not much. The batteries are fully charged but have been off the charger for atleast 2 days. The air conditioning is on so the batteries should be no warmer than room temp.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
And NO, my girlfriend is not Blonde.

sounds like you had a battery shorting out against itself and the metal of teh earring. I've smoked more than my share of jumper cables doing that.

Well I know my physics are basic but it sounds like you created yourself a conductor using the earring. You would be surprised how much power and heat a 9 volt battery can generate. Try sticking the male side (pointy side) between your tongue if your interested.

Haha guys. Im being serious here. The Batteries are from my digital camera (but could be used in vibrator...Now that I think about it.)
But seriously, this is scary. i was hopeing someone could help explain what might have happened.
She is my hotness.

Cordis and Asmo do seem to be providing serious explanations.

You short circuited the battery, which caused a large amount of current to flow from one battery to the other thereby heating up the conducting cable (even if they are gold earrings they still have a small resistance). And the earring therefore melted.
