View Full Version : The Sanitized World of GW Bush

Really long, but worthwhile article about Bush's world, trip to Europe, and two excellent letters (one from a German and one from an Iraqi).
From Mother Jones (http://motherjones.com/news/dailymojo/2005/02/potemkin.html)
excerpt:
Bush's Potemkin World
By Tom Engelhardt
"The great motorcade," wrote Canadian correspondent Don Murray, "swept through the streets of the city… The crowds … but there were no crowds. George W. Bush's imperial procession through Europe took place in a hermetically sealed environment. In Brussels it was, at times, eerie. The procession containing the great, armour-plated limousine (flown in from Washington) rolled through streets denuded of human beings except for riot police. Whole areas of the Belgian capital were sealed off before the American president passed."
Murray doesn't mention the 19 American escort vehicles in that procession with the President's car (known to insiders as "the beast"), or the 200 secret service agents, or the 15 sniffer dogs, or the Blackhawk helicopter, or the 5 cooks, or the 50 White House aides, all of which added up to only part of the President's vast traveling entourage. Nor does he mention the huge press contingent tailing along inside the president's security "bubble," many of them evidently with their passports not in their own possession but in the hands of White House officials, or the more than 10,000 policemen and the various frogmen the Germans mustered for the President's brief visit to the depopulated German town of Mainz to shake hands with Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder.

So basically one liberal columnist ,1 German , and 1 Iraqi said they think Bush is sheltered.
There is a simple explanation for what they do. Idiots. Anyone that cannot answer any of these questions for themselves is just stupid. Any question that you would ask Bush that you don't already know the answer to, is not worth asking. Because you already know the answer. If you don't know the answer you are infact stupid.
The rest of the article just talks about how the move in a bubble. Well with the massive amounts of extremists idiots who would love nothing more than to see something bad happens to Bush, I would never want this to happen to any president, they have to do this because people out there are just complete idiots. More than half this forum fits that description. I call them idiots because they are. They don't give straight answers, they have no clue what the want, yet the won't shut the fuck up. Sit down and shut up, if you have something constructive then you can talk. If you talk out of turn get the hell out, if you saying something that in no way helps the situation get the hell out. That is why Bush doesn't want anything to do with people who are against him. Because he knows no matter what he tells them they will bitch and moan, and the worst part is no one can tell you way. They are just stupid. No rationality can be found in them.

any other comments on the article? It's sad that Noddy was the only one to actually say anything. And even though I don't agree with him at all, I am glad that he took time to read it and say something about it (although I doubt he read all of it, it's really long and I don't think he can pay attention to it for so long; and there are lots of big polysyllabic words too!)
Since I actually live in Germany I can say that it isn't only that person who wrote the letter who feels like that here. Most people have a serious problem with Bush, but not with the American people. They think Bush is a cowboy who runs roughshod over all those against him.
I completely agree. His little trip here was nothing more than gladhanding with Schroeder and shutting down Mainz for a day. His townhall meeting - a cornerstone of the whole trip - was cancelled because Germans will not prepare questions ahead of time for politicians. If anything, the German public dislikes Bush even more now.

This is why i've long since grown tired of watching such interviews. They interviewers don't get a chance to ask interesting questions.

Also to add to discussion, I was under the impression pretty much all political "debates" and "open sessions" were like this nowadays, regardless of the side.
God forbid you should have someone who disagrees with the person in power's policies asking questions...

While not technically a debate, I think British Parliament is fairly open and unscripted. Tony Blair has to endure the grilling of the opposition party when he addresses them. I think it is fairly similar here in Germany too.
I would love to see Bush have to deal with that. How does it work in Australia?

It kinda reminds me of Bush's visit to Canberra, most of the streets he "could possibly travel on" were blocked for hours, The only senator who "dared" ask him contreversial questions was unconstitunially banned from parliment and the biggest crowd was north of the airport to see that the fucker "actually left". The only physical lasting thing from his visit is the peace sign painted on the Kings Ave bridge that the govt tried to paint over the morning of his trip around Canberra, I still chuckle to myself as I drive over it on the way to work.

When Bush came to Australia, Our media was banned from interviewing him, and question time in parliament was cancelled for the first time in 105 years. As katana said, one senator did speak up, and was banned from speaking again, another female senator attempted to pass him a letter, and was physically prevented from doing so.
Ironically, around the same time, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party was in town, and actively encouraged our media for holding press conferences, interviews etc.
So it seems GWB either really is living a sheltered life, too illiterate to hold a conversation with journalists, or all of the above.

Q] Good morning. My name is Mark Trahant. I'm the editorial page editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and a member of the Native American Journalist Association. (Applause.) Most school kids learn about the government in the context of city, county, state and federal. And, of course, tribal governments are not part of that at all. Mr. President, you've been a governor and a President, so you have a unique experience, looking at it from two directions. What do you think tribal sovereignty means in the 21st century, and how do we resolve conflicts between tribes and the federal and the state governments?
[BUSH]: Tribal sovereignty means that, it's sovereign. You're a -- you've been given sovereignty, and you're viewed as a sovereign entity. And, therefore, the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities.

Love it. Noddy got so flustered up at the fact that the president of his so called "land of the free" was muzzled up from talking to any Australians on camera on his own accord, while a communist leader was doing the exact opposite that he avoided defeat and resulted in spurting out some babble about the people on this forum and somehow tried to make out that we represent ALL Australians, including our polititions and journalists...
What a dumb cunt! :p
"I want to appreciate those of you who wear our nation's uniform for your sacrifice."
It was slightly funny. He also said "I want to appreciate" rather than "I appreciate". By saying I want to can mean you are not doing it at present. It is almost implicit that "but I can't" were silent words to finish the sentence. Not really polished and it shows. Sure, everyone knows what he is supposed to mean, but this way he can get away with saying something under the guise of: my speaking is goofy.
If you're a younger person, you ought to be asking members of Congress and the United States Senate and the president what you intend to do about it. If you see a train wreck coming, you ought to be saying, what are you going to do about it, Mr. Congressman, or Madam Congressman?"
you should be they. Bush: A younger person should be asking the congress and president their opinion of what "you" the younger person is intending to do, like they know what you are intending, but you don't know what you're intending.
Train wrecks don't come. They happen. Still I know what he meant, but the funny thing is here you are in his little analogy watching a train wreck coming and you are asking a congressman or transsexual congressman what they are going to do about it. Now that is comedic genious! :p Most of what Bush says is funny. I don't hold it against him but h should be polished when the occasion is deserving ie the military quote above.
I'm not that bothered about the -man/men extension to describe a female of a profession, but it is hilarious in this instance when he says Madam Congressman
... if you have something constructive then you can talk. If you talk out of turn get the hell out, if you saying something that in no way helps the situation get the hell out.

You said jets, the whole point of the argument was about jets, the US flying planes after WWII isn't much of a statement as most countries were flying planes well before then.
Oh and you didn't say anything about congress till I brought it up, you used good old Abe Linc as a reference without knowing that the courts later said that his suspension was ruled unconstitutional.

I said he did, and that the president can do it. Just because I never mentioned congress doesn't mean he can't do it.

No one has come up with a decent counter argument, that is what I have been saying this entire post! You never supplied a decent argument to the original article so there was nothing to refute other than your inane comments:
No rationality can be found in them.So people have been responding to your ability to call other people idiots. You never attempted to address this article and dismissed it outright because it goes against what you believe. That's totally fine, but please at least offer me some reasons other than "he is an idiot." If I want that type of analysis I can go to the elementary school down the street and ask those kids there. But then again, they might be more informed than you are.
There is a simple explanation for what they do. Idiots.Oh and you can't say that someone does idiocy. It's not a verb.
