when I worked for a software call centre Harvey Norman were the bane of my existance.
They'd routinely package together two of our software packages that weren't built to run together, the staff's tech knowledge was severely lacking and we'd often get calls from customers with our rival software packages that were helpfully given our number by HN staff.
Very, very average.

Harvey Norman sucks a fat one. So bloody expensive and most of their staff either know SFA or are complete and utter rude pricks, or both!
Dick Smith is marginally better, although i dont shop at either places

Apparently admins can modify polls, but I have no idea how. [shrugs] I wouldn't put that in without Styg's permission anyway, and it doesn't look like he wants it.

i love the Thingy disclaimer.
personally i'd go to Domayne. because it's like Harvey Norman but with nicer architecture.
otherwise if i want something i let my fingers do the walking first. i ring EB, Dick Smith, Harvey Norman, Domayne. I've found the staff at David Jones to be particularly helpful, though their prices are at a premium.
if i want to learn about a new hardware product or software release i usually go to David Jones and get the lowdown from their well trained (and polite) staff. then i go somewhere else and baffle them with the bullshit i've learnt and then go for the throat and get myself a discount.
sometimes i go straight for the discount. i only go for the throat if they wash thoroughly.

/me sticks my nose up at thingys ability to complete his librarian duties.
Please, how many times have you heard Styg say that he loves the cock.
It's almost his catch phrase. ;)

Its all about the cover sheet for the TPS reports
I dub thee Hardly Normal and Tricky Dickys... and they both suck balls.... hairy, sweaty ones at that ;)

neither; there is a reason harvey norman is regularly known as hardly normal...
and dick smith - well any man who shortens his name to a nickname of a mans anatomy - well....

Both are pretty dodge stores. Only good thing about Harvey Normans is they usually have a lot of stock due to their size, and they will *always* go lower than the sticker price. Seriously, the sales staff can always be beaten down.

how about chooses his nickname of something that comes out of a mans anatomy ? :grr:
Harvey Norman is a total ripoff, I would never buy electronics from there. DSE is marginal, if I'm feeling lazy I might buy a cordless phone or something - but never computer parts (which I buy alot of)
Incidently, prices overseas rock [hijacks thread], a nvidia 6800 gpu goes for around $700 in australia, $615 in singapore, and just over the border a lovely $560 ! :D

Anyone can be beaten down. All it requires is a baseball bat.

I'm the first vote for Harvey Norman?!?!?! I love the place. Shopped there for all my gaming needs in many locations over many years. Always picking up bargains and they have a huge range at every store. They also offer new games for $84 which is better than everywhere else. What more can you ask for???

What's Dick Smith like in Australia?
Here it is geared more towards electronics as in circuit boards and misc stuff like that whereas Harvey Normans is more of an appliances store i.e. TVs, computers, stereos, whiteware etc.
So here the battle is not really existant as they both fullfill seperate needs.
But I buy a lot of stuff from DS. I think I've only ever bought one thing from HN.

I like Dick Smith better because of the electronics stuff you can get there. HN is way overpriced and a lot of things I would want to buy, they wouldn't stock anyway.

Never been to a Dick Smith Powerhouse store, but that didn't stop me from voting for it. Harvey Norman sucks so bad.

Dick Smih Powerstore is a version of dicks smiths which is like Harvey Norman, sells computers, tvs etc
When i was pricing laptops reecently i checked out both the stores. HN were a lot more expensive than DS, but they were both a lot more expensive than buying off the interweb, so they both sucked

True, but then they come to people like us for help. Then you have to resist hitting them for being stupid. It's the angst it causes...
Personally i'd never shop in one of those shops as they typically have a lot of everything, but the best of nothing. Plus the prices are stupidly high.
I go to ordinary Dick Smiths for little odds and ends in the electronics feilds (rc cables, plug adapters, etc).

Yeah same. True you can get it cheaper elsewhere if you try, but at least getting it from Dick's is easy and quick.

I go to Dick Smith's Powerhouse, because being a Woolies employee I get my staff discount there. When buying PC bits, it can work out to be a bit of a saving, and that works for me.

You mean the super duper %5 staff discount.
I get laughs whenever I mention that cause I used to work for Dick Smith. You could get it even cheaper than that by buying online or even bugging the sales staff enough.
