I walk past Fitness First every night going to work and they always have stupid smarmy signs out the front which try and make people feel guilty about not joining the gym on the basis that they will immedietly run in and sign up for eleventy billion dollars to run on a treadmill a couple of times. One of the signs was "You know you need fitness first when you think pilates are the people who fly planes." etc etc

They normally shit me but the ones they've got at the moment pisses me off the most. It says "You know you need fitness first when you think yoga will one day rule the galaxy." :spingo: :spingo: WTF? One, everyone knows what yoga is. Two, YODA is already deceased. He lived a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Three, he never ruled the galaxy back then. He jsut sort of chilled and has some fights and lived in a swamp.

Fitness First are not going to attract any unfit Star Wars fans with their smarmy, self content and FACTUALLY INCORRECT signs. I hope you fellow geeks will join me in boycotting Fitness First. And in fact I've gone so far as to boycott all gyms. I hope you will follow my lead and show these wankers who's boss. Who's with me?

I am, I would love to sit in on this protest.

I am a fat, log haired, IT professional nerd who loves StarWars. I even put Jedi down as my religion during the last census.

The only issue is I never go to the gym so threatening them with the lack of my business is not really going to carry any weight.

I will stand outside with a sign and chant slogans though.

Sorry but i need to go to the gym
mainly rehab for knee surgey that i had last year to strengthen my knee so that i can play competitive soccer this year
but i also go to a boxing gym , which has hardly any weight machines etc
using your own body weight to do exercises. such as dips, pushups, pullups and chinups, then plenty of punching bags and speed balls
it will get you fit quicker than pumping weights and doing 15 minutes on an exercise bike

My fuckin oath i'll join your alliance!

I went to a gym for my first time ever tonight, mind you only to buy a book off a bloke. It was a funny little escapade, everything I viewed reinforced everything I already thought about them. Very humorous places filled with tools with their head's up their arses.

You wanna get fit? Buy a bike. Learn to swim. Climb a mountain. Go hunt your fucking food you fat fuck. Do some push-ups/sit-ups/chin-ups/push your new bike up some mach10 hills. For fucks sake, do something for yourself other than being so fucking unmotivated you need a gym membership or a "personal trainer" in order to keep fit hahaha fucking laughable concept! Go pump some iron you tools!!

Some gyms can be ok but they are usually the privately owned ones and not the big fuck-off corporate chains. I have my own weights and have had for a long time ie no need for me to step into a gym.

What pisses me off the most about Fitness First is those fucking backpacks they give you when you join. I swear, everyone that has one likes to strut around and show off... like they are above you in social status or something, Get over it!!!! It's just a fucking bag. Ohhhhh, I'm so cool.... I go to Fitness First

I and my friends are members of our university gym. It gives us access to all equipment and training classes including dance classes and pool access. I think you are the one that is up yourself. Sure some people who go to the gym are tools. But I know that I go because it feels good to be able to train after being cramped up studying. Also I think you are missing the point with the gym memberships. The equipment implemented in most gyms (well I’ve only ever been to the uni gym) is superior to the equipment most people have in there home. Therefore minimising the risk of injuries, also it’s a more social settings e.g. me and some mates will do laps in the pool and try and swim faster than one another. Where as if i did this alone i know i wouldn’t push myself as hard.

I think you've missed the point entirely. They completely fucked up a major plot point of star wars! Thats almost as bad as being George Lucas. I couldn't give a flying fuck about gym memberships, I'm going to be joining one myself shortly, but THEY SCREWED UP STAR WARS!

I see you are in a great position to make a well informed comment on gyms

You even said you went to buy a book, so assuming you spent no more than 10 mins in that place, probably didn't talk to guys there and didn't use it for its purpose...I think you are just narrow minded and are conforming to a common stereotypical opinion abotu gyms.

You can only go so far with push-ups/sit-ups/chin-ups. I go and pump iron so I can get big. I can't do that with them 3 exercises. Maybe if you took some time to learn about the subject you would understand why people go to gyms. The gym I go to is a great place. The other guys there are helpful and friendly and there is a nice sense of community.

I think I will follow your suggestion of pumping iron. In the meantime, I think you should reflect on where your head is. Tool

Your right about the injuries, I simply accept that if I’m going to use my body in real situations as opposed to controlled environments using gym equipment I will get hurt every now and then. Also, you reinforced my perception of gym member’s being unmotivated with your social setting’s comment.

I’m sorry I didn’t explain myself very well. I’m more into keeping fit, you know like useful stuff in day to day life and activities. I’m not much into building my muscle’s so big I can indulge in my own self satisfaction, as false as it may be. Keep pumping that iron and drinking those protein shakes buddy. I’ll be out riding barrels and smashing mountains and keeping, god forbid, much fitter than you.

Fitness First pissed me off by calling me with their "free class" phone spam like 15 times.

My gf goes to the gym, so she foolishly puts me down for a "free class" thinking that there could possibly be something that is free that doesn't annoy you. So I get a call, I go to a class, I even sit through their high-pressure sales pitch and end up telling them that I don't need their stinking gym because I have legs and arms and I can run and swim for like $10 a week.

So 3 weeks later, some other wank calls me up and wants to know if I want a free class. "No thanks, I'm busy, bye-bye *click*".

So the next day he calls back. Cant' take a hint, I think. So I make it more clear "I have already had a free class and I don't want another - I do not want to join your gym. Bye-bye. *click*".

So the next week he calls back. OMFG. So I give him a big, big serve. I say "I've BEEN and had my free class, I made it clear that I do not want another one - WHY do you persist?" So the guy backpeddles digs himself in more holes, which I continue to point out. This guy seriously cannot deal with an agressive customer and no part of his sales script can deal with anything I am saying and eventually just goes silent. It was beautiful. They haven't called back.

Now - on the subject of the backpacks which are everywhere - I suggest, as part of this counter-advertising campaign against haughty Star Wars luddites, I ask every unfit geek with no interest in getting fit - go and get a Fitness First backpack from someone you know who doesn't want it and wear it everywhere. The more overweight people wearing Fitness First backpacks the better. And if you are fit and you have a Fitness First backpack that you don't want - give it to a homeless person. You'll be helping the poor and Fitness First will probably hate it.

i am an ex-fitness first member, but i hope to never set foot inside there again. for the most part it is filled with muscle-bound meat-heads.
this is not a tirade against gyms, but fitness first is such a fashion statement.
my reasons for joining? well i'd just lost almost 15kgs and i wanted to back up this excellent weight loss result with a bit of fitness. i looked around at a few gyms, but the sales guy at fitness first pulled me in hook line etc...
i only lasted about 3 months before i got bored with running machines, and i realised that if i continued too much with the weights, i'd begin to look like a muscle-bound meat-head.
that's when i discovered the joys of LONG walks around my area (and other areas). i've kept the weight off, i feel great, and i dont have to pay these folks for their overpriced gym - and i got to keep the backpack!

I go there now and found the place to be full of muscle heads in the weights room. In the cardio room most of the equipment doesnt even work. Also they offer spa and pool that dont even look like they have been cleaned in a while who knows how many people pissed in them.

Each to their own I guess. But what's to say I don't do or even enjoy cardio work as well? And what makes you think I want to be huge (actually I will give you that one, i did kinda say that. But I don't wanna be HUUUUUGE, just more muscular than I am now). One thing that concerns me though is that you equate gym with lack of motivation. Fuck me it was an effort for me to finally get to the gym and I am damm proud of it!

gyms are great, there are plenty of hotties and you can be buff instead of growing fat on takeaway while you play WOW, you may even get to talk to real people there.

I've bought a new bike. Since I bought it about two/three months now I've lost 1st 3lbs. That was last week, my times have all improved, I use it for going to and from work and there I am today thinking I might be below the 16st mark. Fucking scales: 16st 10.

It's nothing to do with all that eating out, takeaway food and generally just being a greedy pig. Honest.

Oh well, back on it next week.

$35-40 a month student, $70-80 home membership and $80-90 passport membership.

I've heard nothing but bad things about fitness first.

I didn't even consider them as an option when I was investigating gyms to join, even if I get a discount for joining them from work.

Instead I joined Fernwood (female only gym), sure, I pay a shitload ($69 a fortnight)... but I have 1 personal trainer session a week.... and its such a nice relaxing environment.... they don't upsell... which is nice

Unlike fucking fitness first... its all pressure and sales... I've had about 5 friends now locked into a year long contract with them... because they got pressured by the sales people into signing up.

Completely off topic and likely to start an argument, but can you imagine the outcry if someone started up a "male only" gym? What about all those fat men out there who don't want to embarrass themselves by exercising in front of women?

Apart from the whole "oh my god and all female gym, they must be dykes", which would then get turned on "oh my god an all male gym, they must be fags".... i really don't see much of an outcry
