View Full Version : March Photo Contest Theme Ideas
Hi Guys,
As some of you may have noticed, Stygian is very busy these days with WoW (and other stuff I'm sure - see his post http://forums.zgeek.com/showpost.php?p=519308&postcount=19), so to help out and keep the photo contest alive, I will get a poll going for the month of March.
As we are already 9 days in, we need to get things moving quickly to get some time to get that "one shot"!
So I suggest if we all post some theme ideas, then as soon as we have enough to choose from, I will knock up a poll to do a quick vote and get the contest udnerway. So the sooner we can get some ideas, the sooner we can start shooting!
edit: I have added a poll. Trying to hurry things up a bit seeing as we will have a short month now. Poll will close Friday night (8pm - *WA TIME*), just in time for the weekend. Hope this is enough time.

I vote motion/action shots.
Which means it could be a speeding car, something shooting their load or something along the lines of movement or activity.
How about, long exposure motion shots?
It's the best of both worlds, would get some nice abstarct style photos too.

Except some people dont have cameras that allow long exposures.
Motion shots sounds good. :)
Yeah, I like the idea of motion shots too.
We need a few more ideas before I can get a poll going to vote on.
OK, got some more theme ideas:
- macro (already been mentioned in the past)
- water
- old and new (this could be interesting)

Is that a long exposure and a water shot in one?

That is a very _nice_ pic. What gear do you use jak?

I use a Canon 10D (digital SLR) with various lenses/tripod/etc.
I just looked up the exif data for this particular photo:
- 4 secs
- f/22
- 28mm (using a 28-135mm lens)
- ISO 100
I also used a circular polariser to enhance the colours, cut down on reflection (even though I was in the shade due to the nearby hills), and most importantly, reduce the light to allow a longer shutter speed to achieve that surreal foamy look.
:)
Anyway, *themes* people, themes!

Night, or landscape.
I'd like to suggest flora and or fauna for future comps.

Landscape or motion shots, because both of these are easier to do even if your equipment is not top notch.
Well, seeing as people seem to voting rather than suggesting ( :) ) maybe I should just add the poll now?

How about a "Best of both worlds" (i.e. a digitally enhanced theme)? You take a photo, modify it in some way and post both the original and the enhanced version. The change could be something subtle like adjusting levels or more elaborate like changing the colour of someone's clothes or hair etc.
Optionally you could publish the originals later or link to them so that the change isn't immediately evident.
I don't know about the rest of you but the current themes/suggestions seem a bit recurring and bore the shit out of me.
P.S. There's almost always a theme which doesn't suit someone's equipment, location, or political views so I don't think specifying an acceptable exposure time should be a limitation.

i like druids idea, i think we have seen how restrictive themes affect the comp, ie no one enters. ive been busy the past 2 months but i have a new camera im itching to try out.
I have to agree with you guys. However, in trying to help Stygian out *and* get the contest going after already missing out on 9 days, we had to be quick with getting a theme. I still think the themes are general enough to get work with - I know I have some ideas already.
I reckon your ideas/themes should go into next months (April) theme so we can all vote on them.
Getting feedback is good.
Photographers,
This is a bump/reminder to make sure you have voted on the March poll. Closes tonight!
:)
mmmmm equal votes for both motion and water. Didn't see that one coming!
I guess we should allow both themes to run this month.
Thoughts?
water
i just got back from young endeavour voyage so i got some water shots!
I missed the poll - I would have voted water :P
