Hey Guys,

The March theme has been decided.

Theme: Water. The March vote (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?t=31642) thread resulted in a draw but a couple of 'late' entries helped with the final decision.

Submission Date: March 31st. Please submit all entries to urbanjak at gmail dot com with a subject of "Zgeek March Photo Comp" or similiar, including your Zgeek username. I will reply to all entries via email, if you don't get a reply send me a PM here just to make sure I got your entry. Please include the photo's title in the email.

Editing Allowed: Resizing of the image to 1024 x whatever (portrait pics to be whatever x 1024). Images are allowed to be cropped and colour/brightness changes are also allowed.

Other Rules: Photo's must have been taken this month. I know it's hard to police so we work on an honour system here. Also all entries must have a title. One entry per person.

Prizes: Pirate has kindly offered some rep prizes for the photo contests. 1st will receive 300 rep points, second 200 rep points and third 100 rep points.

I will post a March Photo Contest voting poll on April 1 !

If you submit a photo and then want to change it - no worries, just send me the new version!

OK, so lets get out there and get some nice "water" shots. Post your thoughts/comments/questions here !

I need to find some nice places with water.. Should pimp this thread in the general forum so more people enter, it's a real easy theme that anyone with a camera could do.

I have submitted my entry. Yaay my first one in a competition. It was taken at one of those farm zoo thingies.

It's a pretty simple photo really but I do like the way that the shadows on the water highlight the white of the swan.

Here it is. I've also e-mailed it to you Jak.

The only change I have actually made is resizing it from 1280 * 1024 to 1024 * 819.

Just a note, emailing it to me direct allows the contest to remain anonymous.

Saves everyone from favouritism. Imagine if Nodbugger entered and had a winning entry with his name on it? Sorta limits some people's chance of winning. Also removes the level playing field sorta thing, more popular or known members will get votes just because their name is attached.

I too have a nice shot that could fit the theme but it was taken a few months ago. However, the rationale for a limited time frame is probably to encourage participants to compose a photo with the theme in mind, rather than fishing out old photos that might fit the theme.

I hadn't realised it was a popular vote...I thought it was judged by judgereres. Oh well, cool. That's probably better.

Yeah, I think half the challenge in the contest is the going out and looking for that one shot. I also have several "water" shots from last year, but its been quite a challenge in getting one this month! I'm still trying!

The last couple of days there has been a whole lot of mist in the harbour in the morning. This morning the Arahura ferry was lit up bright white by sun hitting it. It looked awesome backdropped by the mist coming down to about 200mtrs and you could see the bottom of the city. It was awesome and I would love to have taken a photo but A). I didn't have my camera, and B). I was driving.

8 entries so far people - good work.

lowededwookie: too bad mate. Always seems to happen huh? NZ has such beautiful scenery too (hope to go back over there later this year).

Thanks!

I had to look up the term "rotoscoped" - never heard of it. But yeah, I see what you mean. The flax (didnt know it was called that) had a thin layer of ice on it and the scene was back lit so made the ice stand out giving it that effect.

I got lucky. :)

http://gallery.zgeek.com/data/thumbnails/1/emley.jpgThat's not bad Noddy. It's a bit of a bugger getting it all in focus when you're so close, but it's still come out quite well.

Here's one I took a month or so ago, (click thumb) I think it has a Thunderbirds type model effect going off. I'm probably just tripping. I liked how the water came out in focus fairly close with the Tv mast in background ok too.

OK, it should be 1024 pixels on one side, have a title, and be emailed to be to keep it anonymous.

But thats ok, I will enter as is - and call it "Fish Tank".

Yay, Nodbugger de-repped me for this post.
He de-repped me for using him as an example of why it should be anonymous. I thought it was pretty clear. There are members here who would deliberatly vote for an entry that is competing with Nodbuggers entry just because they don't want him to win. That was my point, obviously it wasn't made clear enough for some.

If you convert one of the frames from the .mov to a jpeg, resize it to 1024 on one side, and there is water in the pic then of course!

hold on here just a minute. I thought that the theme was 'water'. Does that imply that the photo must have water in it? Or is the artist free to interpert that however they want to? example, a photo titled absence (not my entry, just an example of an alternative take on the theme)

The theme is "water" so it means the photo must have something to do with, um, water. :)

The interpretation of that is of course very loose. To me, the focus or subject of the photo should have something do with water. So far all entries generally have their focus as water. The photo you have used as an example looks like an entry for a contest whose theme is "rocks". Not sure how that can be interpreted to mean water?

edit: aaahhh I see. "abscence" of water. I see where you are going. Personally, I think the photo should involve the theme subject somehow in the image. If we start doing "anti-themes" then I think we may start deviating to far from theme.

Having said that, if that photo was submitted, I add it to the list as I am not about to refuse any entries on pedantics. It would then be up to the 'people' to decide if it fits theme etc by voting (or not) for it.

Does the "March" in the comp mean that the photos are to be shot sometime in March or that the entries must be submitted by 12 pm 31 March 2005, AEST?

Whats the current rule on multiple entries?

Shot in march. Not sure about the multiple entries. I think it is only one per person though.

Yeap, shot in March, submitted in March (although if you submit it a day late or so - ie before I post the poll then thats cool), one entry per person.

You may change your mind and submit a new entry, in which case your original submission is void.

ie. what it says in the first post of this thread.

.

Personally, I think photography is an art form and as such should aspire to not only be pleasing to the eye but also thought provoking.

Not trying to start an argument here, as you have already stated that you would allow entries anyhow, and I whole-heartedly agree that the cyber community where this contest is hosted will ultimately make the judgement anyhow. I was merely stating an opinion. And another opinion is that the example photo did involve the subject theme 'somehow'.
