View Full Version : Secret US plans for Iraq's oil
The Bush administration made plans for war and for Iraq's oil before the 9/11 attacks, sparking a policy battle between neo-cons and Big Oil, BBC's Newsnight has revealed.
Two years ago today - when President George Bush announced US, British and Allied forces would begin to bomb Baghdad - protesters claimed the US had a secret plan for Iraq's oil once Saddam had been conquered.
In fact there were two conflicting plans, setting off a hidden policy war between neo-conservatives at the Pentagon, on one side, versus a combination of "Big Oil" executives and US State Department "pragmatists".

The industry-favoured plan was pushed aside by a secret plan, drafted just before the invasion in 2003, which called for the sell-off of all of Iraq's oil fields. The new plan was crafted by neo-conservatives intent on using Iraq's oil to destroy the Opec cartel through massive increases in production above Opec quotas.
So it WAS all about oil.

noddy i must ask, members of the govt are on the record pre 9/11 with their opinions and so forth to what to be done with iraq and its oil. so why deny it? arent you capable of coming up with a better way to support your beliefs such as, "yes they did have plans for the oil in iraq, but those were part of much larger plans to get rid of sadam and free the iraqi people"

If your argument revolves around "They talked about oil" , then you have no argument. In NO way did they ever plan to steal the oil like you suggest or this article suggest.
They obviously had ideas of what to do with it as they would with the major industry of any country that they invaded. If it was China they would think of all the manufacturing jobs, if it were Mexico they would think of fire works and VW Beetles. they would do the same type of thinking about the major money maker of any country. Oil is what keeps Iraq going. What else would they have?
So they got all these plans for oil but none for securing machinery which can be used to make WMDs, which happens to be the official reason they went there. Funny that.

well of course noddy, they werent into nation building or anything until 9/11, so they wouldnt have been planning to over throw sadam.
Bush and his buddies, Oil is what they did for living before they got into office. they would have been planning on wear to get oil from as it is in shrinking supply. Iraq has alot of oil, it aint a stupid assumption they dicussed how to get more access to that oil.
