Apparently, there's a new rumour circulating that in the recep scene in ep.21 where you see Boone in the little plane sending a message over the radio, the message he receives is different then what was broadcast in ep.20.
In ep.20, the message that comes back is 'There are no survivors of flight 815' in ep.21 the message that comes back is 'No! We are the survivors of flight 815'
It could be that there are more survivors on the island from the tail end of the plane, or that Boone was talking to a survivor from a different time period.
I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. Of course, this could all be a load of bollocks, I'm going to watch both episodes again tonight to see if I can work it out.

this is a load of bollocks. this rumour was around when the ep first aired and the ep recap was on the website. the confusion came about because the teletext subtitles said 'there were no survivors' when the ep originally aired, so everyone assumed this was correct. on repeat listenings some people thought it was 'no, we're the survivors'.
officially, according to interviews, the line was purposely made difficult to understand, and they won't confirm which version is correct. but the same audio is heard in both the recap and what originally aired

I still reckon it said "there were no survivors". I turned my volume up very loud and listened to it over and over, and it did NOT sound like "no, we are the survivors".

i'm in the opposite camp. i reckon it said 'no, we're the survivors'. but i really don't know if that's correct, that's just what i think i heard. but i do know for certain that we both were listening to the exact same audio, no matter what we think was said
that being said, it was so 'no, we're the survivors'. listen to the tone of his voice. he says 'no' then there is a definite pause, and then emphasises the "we're"

new ep today.
according to tv tome, this new ep is called born to run.
then, next week on may 18 is exodus (1), the first part of the finale. then the following week, on may 25 there is a double episode - exodus (2) and exodus (3).
# The season finale originally scheduled for May 25, 2005 was only supposed to be 90 minutes long, but due to story changes and last minute filming, the series was upgraded to a 2-hour season finale, hence the 3rd episode Exodus(3).

Not in the usual places...
Torrent Search (http://62.212.84.218/next/search.php?key=lost) has one under the "Pirate Bay" section. :D Select the "Pirate Bay" check box and search for Lost. 3rd torrent down, the file name is as below:

Hey rayjay - if you could mark stuff like that as a spoiler that would be great... I know that that may be what they're supposed to have said, but the show's writers didn't tell anyone either way so I was happy believing the teletext hoping I might be proved wrong in a future episode. Now I kinda know what the big suprise for the finale is.....

Well, I've gotta say that episode was a bit meh. It was sort of a calm before the storm episode - some interesting stuff happened, like some of the stuff Walt said, but it seems like they're saving everything for the triple finale. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Kate in future episodes though...

WALT IS PSYCHIC! OMG!
The hatch is getting more and more interesting though, especially Jack's unexpected reaction of "zoomj! What's in it? Lets open it!!!"
My guess is its some kind of super polar bear. One that is resistant to bullets leaving the castaways helpless to its mauling powers.
That or its Russoe's sauna she conveniently forgot to tell everyone about.

I'm fairly freakin confused, but I have been assured by my mate that this is the point of the show and that you only learn a little more each week. Needless to say, and I'm sure it's up there ^ in the thread where I haven't had a chance to read, but how addictive is this show with its interesting characters and intriguing plot line. As I described to my mate, the whole plot line with the chick getting into the case was all there just to get you to the start of a whole new plot line about wtf is the go with the little plane? Considering I'm the first person to post on Ep23 I'd better tag this
SPOILERS!!!!
Holy shitting dick nipples Batman! A pretty awesome episode all in all. Russoe's tale was creepy, and I can't wait to see the next night when these apparent "Others" come into play, maybe with their pet hyper-polar bear.
Nice to see Sun and Jin get back together, and good to see the dog didn't die at the end like I had a sinking feeling it would.
Poor Sawyer, nobody loves him :( was hoping Kate would somehow get back in time but it wasn't likely considering how they just reached The Black Rock (I'm assuming that's the boats name maybe?)
I wasn't expecting the boat to actually get launched, but you know somethings going to go awry.
At the very end of the TCM version, something got cut off, from the half a second we get to see of it, it looked like a monsoon report on a news weather station. I'm guessing this was in relation to the boat leaving, they are going to get monsowned.

was a great episode to make up for the previous two. those two showed they really had made up their mind of the plot of the finale, and when the season was extended they were just stalling for time.
i loved the short scene with michelle rodriguez. the first thing that came into my mind was why hadn't she and jack talked on the island, considering they were basically fucking eachother at the bar. to find out she was in the back of the plane confirms my belief that we will be seeing from those surivors soon
a couple weeks ago i speculated that the second season would move camp completely, and solely focus on the lives of those at the back of the plane. of course it's impractical for a tv show to actually do this (hiring and firing the entire cast with a season), but i still think that would be pretty cool
DeathRow
20-05-2005, 02:22 PM
I'm still wondering why they put in that scene with michelle rodriguez, her having to sit at the back and getting a call, and telling jack that the worst put is over. And she leaves.
I'm thinking terrorist... and Sayid leaving his bags unattended....could this be another twist...

i dont know which version i downloaded
but at the end last shot of the boat, it went black like it was going to an ad that had been cut and then when coming back, very faint looked like it was going into a shot of the black smoke again over the tree line, but then it ended. Only for a second and faint but i cant see it on my computer version, only on the TV.
Sayid leaving his bags unattended....could this be another twist...
wasnt there a thing of him having a problem with airport security in one of the previous episodes?

That episode was fan-bloody-tastic!!
EP. 23 SPOILERS...
I have to admit that I had tears in my eyes when Vincent (the dog) tried to swim after the raft, when he turned back...a tear rolled down my cheek! What a pathetic girl I am. Mind you, I cry at the NSPCC adverts on TV, so it's hardly suprising.
Am I dreaming, or was there an episode where Locke told someone about the time his sister died and his labrador jumped onto his sisters bed and his mum decided that the dog was actually the re-incarnation of the dead girl? Is Vincent some sort of re-incarnation of Boone?!
I love it that finally the monster, when Russoe et al were approching the black rock, finally sounded properly mechanical. I have been thinking it sounded like a machine for ages, but I wasn't 100% sure. It bugs me that Russoe obviously knows a lot about the island, but always talks about events on the island in such a cryptic way.
I loved it when Sawyer told Jack about meeting his dad in the bar. Couple that with the scene when Sawyer walks onto the beach with the mast for the raft, shirtless, sweaty and tanned, and I fell in love with him all over again!
The column of black smoke was incredibly freaky.
I wonder what Hurley wrote on his note that he didn't want Charlie to read? Something about the numbers?
I feel that we will get to know a whole lot more about the island by the end of the series as the makers seem to be wrapping up loose ends now.
I can't wait for the last two episodes. I have no idea what I am going to do when the series finishes...I think I might stop watching anything at all since I'm not sure anything can match up to Lost.

Yeah it' s written in huge letters across the back of the boat.
How cool is that, I was expecting a shrine thing, coupled with the black and white rock they found on adam and eve in the cave.... How come that hasn't come back up again! And Locke's whole discussion about the two sides while teaching Walt how to play backgammon.
Will these questions be answered this series or go to the next...

Son of a bitch, the version I have cut off in the last five minutes. Right as Charlie hands back the baby and the chick goes to hug Sayed the avi crashed. From reading some summaries I missed:
- Locke and Jack met eyes on the flight
- Virgin Mary statue in Charlies backpack
- Hurly reading that spanish comic book on the plane
- A look into the hatch
I'm not sure if I can be bothered re-downloading another 650MB for a lousy 5 mins, so can someone post a screenshot of a look down into the hatch? I read that its like a tunnel downwards with metal sides and a ladder down, but I'd like a lookie for myself.

I was always trying to follow the belief that there has to be something physical and not mystical about the island, so I'm kinda dissapointed by this whole smoke thing. Makes it harder to try and second-guess what they're going to do next. Now that we've seen this, ANYTHING can happen later, you can't rule ANYTHING out. Half the fun of shows like this is second-guessing the writers.

When I was watching those bits, I was expecting them to cut to a shot of gnomes from WoW in some of the whacky mechanical things they have created in the game.
... I'm NOT an addict, dammit!
All I can say is, thank fuck we don't have to wait a full year for more. Come on "Fall 2005"!

That was good!
Again with the numbers!
Remember the bit where Hurley buys the old man's scooter?
He is driving through the air port, past some chicks in netball uniforms?
Notice the numbers on their outfits?
4 8 15 16 23 42

Also, when Hurley's car dies at the start, the dash board shows he has travelled 42km, the temperature is 23c and the speed of the car goes from 16 to 15 to 8 to 4.
Glad they had the brains to do it metric, I am still pissed about the “Aussie” travel agent saying he wouldn’t fly Locke back “on our dime.”
edit: Then the numbers show up again in the plane departure times at the airport.

I managed to track down (I was looking for it, gave up, then stumbled over it) the comic that Hurley took on the plane and that Walt ends up reading. You know the one, it is the one with the polar bear, it also features and island that sits atop a….
Ahhhh, you can read it yourself, enjoy!
(Yes, this version is in English.)
http://members.iinet.net.au/~steve.g/waltscomic.pdf
What I don't get is that the number's Hugo (Hurley) is associated with are meant to be bad luck... BUT the bad luck he has (the alarm clock power point being faulty for example) before he makes his trip tell me the numbers were trying to STOP him from taking that flight.
I find this a bit strange UNLESS him going to the island was GOOD luck and not BAD. Don't know how this would work.
What I also find odd is that he said earlier in the season that the numbers brought him to the island (he says this to the french lady) when in fact they almost stopped him from getting there. (i.e. making him get the next flight)
I'm rambling.. it's late and i'm tired but yeah.... I just found that a bit inconsistent. :)

Whenever people from the crash are away from camp and having a conversation they often refer to the rest of the people from the crash as “the others.”
Fitty

Yeah, I guess that could be strung out, I mean Arzt was going on about how they were forming some clique... perhaps the real the others are older survivers... who knows.

29-05-2005, 08:48 AM
To draw it out some more (with some heavy theorising) from the preview of the second series all you see is the main characters running away. Maybe the rest of the 42 survivors (the real "others) revolt after Arzt's death, sick and tired of the main group.
Sounding less and less feasable the more I type on, but hell, with a smoke jaguar and robot anything could happen :P ....except my scenario :D
1. If Walt is psychic (as is hinted in the series) why did he say in a previous episode that they "Had to" go on the raft.. even after he burnt the first one? If he was psychic couldn't he see what was going to happen out at sea?
If not then maybe all he could see was something bad happening on the island and all he knew is he had to get off it and fast!
2. Maybe the guys who took Walt out at sea were from the tail section? It's odd they were 15 miles out to sea (Michael mentions how far they're out before he fires the flare) in such a shitty little runabout.

I dont like the nano robot swarm idea. Cant the smoke be insects or something? they seem to swarm like insects, maybe they are just attracted to the mechanical security system thing
when kate and jack see the smoke for the first time it sounds like insects
lock getting pulled into the ground, it reminded me of that old series Earth 2 where those people were on a planet that was alive. Maybe the islands meant to be alive or some shit?
it shits me having no clue
also was the ladder broken?
Yep the ladder sure was broken.. not too far down either :)

Basiacally the last thing I saw was the raft launching...
Now, having read precious little of the last part of the thread here (basically because I'd be spoiling something I'm going to watch in the coming days), but why isn't Arzt wearing a red shirt? I mean they had the cool-as reference to Empire Strikes Back between Michael and The-Korean-Guy, why couldn't they just have Arzt in a red shirt? the "others" are a bunch of old survivors from the black rock ship or even decendants of the original sailors and slaves.

yeah, i also dont think they want walt for his special powers, does he even have special powers and if so, how'd they know.

i was trying to think of original Idea, and Nazi's, some sort of refuge from the end of the WW2, and then shit you could tie in so many sort of fictional shit about them trying to get holy relics, demons and stuff, advanced technology? Some now disorganised group of people for no purpose on the island, doing bad shit and their cause is long gone. Maurading off passing shits.

Not sure what the whole 'They're not the survivors they thought they were" bit means... maybe they didn't survive.
Maybe there was no crash... Maybe they just put the wreckage onthe beach and then left the people there to think that's what happened. It would explain why they had no injuries (Well some did but maybe again that was part of the whole setup)
That means that some of the passengers may not be passengers at all.
It's a pretty wild theory especially since they all remember the crash but... I'm clutching at straws here people! :p

It all leads me down one path. The Forbidden Planet.
For those who haven't seen The Forbidden Planet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049223/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj 0wfHE9Rm9yYmlkZGVuIFBsYW5ldHxodG1sPTF8bm09b24_;fc= 1;ft=20), let me explain. It's a sci-fi made in 1956. There is a science post on this planet, all communication from there stops. A party is sent out and discover only Dr Morbius and his daughter are still alive. Dr Morbius is very protective of his daughter. Suddenly monsters start attacking the party's base. They set up protective shields and defensive lasers. As the movie goes on, they communicate more with the doctor & his daughter, the attacks get stronger.
They eventually discover that the doc and his crew were researching this alien technology they found on the planet, he had sort of figured it out - it could read your mind and make your thoughts REAL. You think of a bowl of fruit, one appears. There was one thing he didn't count on though, the human subconscious, which he called Id. The machine also read human's Id, all their paranoia, subconscious thoughts were manifested - the doctors protectiveness for his daughter came out and became real (yet invisible) monsters who were attacking others that his Id saw as a threat to his daughter. He didn't want them attacking consciously as he knew they really weren't, and didn't want anyone to die (he wasn't a bastard, he was actually a nice guy), but could not consciously stop them, his unconscious was too strong - they killed his crew and were now attacking the rescue party.
The Island in lost, similar thing - except its affect is stronger on younger minds such as the black kid, and more dangerously to everyone on the island - Claire's child. The French chick could just be a manifestation of the survivors subconscious, or she could be real, with her being the Dr Morbius, and very protective of her son.
Curious. During my three months offline due to my home computer crapping out on me, I too came to this same conclusion - that the producers and writers of Lost were using Forbidden Planet as their template. It's refreshing to know that there's at least one other person out there who thinks along the same lines.
Speaking of which, you'll be hearing from my lawyers about thought infringement you pilfering bastard.

That's so shit. I bet it sells well too.
OK my theory..... I told astro the other day and he said it made sense but I think we were both drunk at the time ;)
OK so going off the "There were no survivors of flight 815" thing... I'd say they're actually (imp's wild LOST theory number 1 billlion ;)) all dead. The island itself is actually purgatory.
Stay with me on this one ;) Each of the main characters we've seen have something to keep living for or something they want to resolve.
Kate still hasn't come to terms with what happened in her past, Jack can't let go of the feeling he caused his father's death and his responsibility for others, Sawyer wants to kill .. well "Sawyer", Michael has a relationship to build with his son, Hurley still blames himself for all the bad luck of everyone around him and so on.
This would also explain why Locke can now walk.
Let's look at Boone. He died after he'd come to terms with his feelings for his half sister and let go. He didn't worry anymore and his one burden in life was gone and so he was free to pass on. Maybe the science teacher who exploded was a very selfish man and so in him helping the others out with the dynamite he died and passed on as well by peforming a selfless act.
It's all pretty sketchy I know... I figure maybe the trapdoor is a gateway to hell which is why it was sealed form the inside out.
Maybe the people trying to leave the island can't b/c they're not meant to.
This could be the same with everyone on the island but we just don't see their story much.
So there's my wild theory.... :) I'm probably way off but there it is :p
That or i'm way off and the other theories out there are true and they weren't actually on 815 but a different flight

some updates from
http://www.spoilerfix.com/lost.php
Quotes from Lindelof and Grillo-Marxuach at a Lost convention: We won't kill sawyer. The theory of all the survivors being dead is not true. The plane did not crash by accident, it crashed for a very specific reason. But he dismissed speculation that someone aboard the plane caused the crash. What's in the hatch will have an effect on Locke. The rear section of the plane — and additional survivors — will be discovered during the second season. The people who kidnapped Walt, the young boy, are the "others" on the island.
Josh Holloway will be back! I hear that first episode next season they are going DOWN the hatch, so hopefully we will finally SEE the light! Malcolm David Kelley will be back to work on Lost next season. But there are definitely issues with his rapid aging (remember, each season is only 40 days), so don't be surprised if a big twist is in the making. Someone wants of the show, and it's not certain it's a 'he'.
i assume it means off not of the show
I believe Mira Furlan (Rousseau) will be back but so far, not full-season contract.... JIN IS ALIVE!!!!! ANd I hear he's getting an ever BIGGER part next season. one final note to those of you freaking out that Naveen Andrews is going to be written off: I really don't think Sayid dies. That is not the cast member I was talking about who's getting written off around October.

My brother just read some book about Disney and Michael Eisener the CEO and he was telling me it mentioned lost and how he didnt want to make it. Also some of the guys there didnt like the show because they were involved with Twin Peaks and how when making it they hadnt even decided who killed the chick and it was a debarkle. Apparently that was there feeling with lost as the people making it didnt have an idea of where it was going and were just making stuff up as they went along.

Heres an update from the Oceanic-Air website I got in the mail.
Greetings from the Writers' Room of Lost!
It was almost a year ago that over ten thousand future fans of Lost joined us on the shores of Waikiki Beach, O'ahu, for the Premiere of our two-hour pilot as part of the city's popular Sunset on the Beach series of screenings.
Today, we are proud to announce that Lost will once again return to Sunset on the Beach. On September 14th, at 6:30 PM, those of you lucky enough to live or travel to O'ahu will be able to watch the season premiere of Lost — entitled "Man of Science, Man of Faith" — projected against the glorious background of one of the world's most beautiful beaches!
Now, we know what you are thinking... "this is all very exciting, but what about those of us who neither live in nor will be traveling to O'ahu on that day?"
To show that, here at Lost, we are sensitive to your needs as well, we have decided to whet your appetite with the following exclusive teaser: a dialogue sample, taken completely at random, from Executive Producer and series co-creator Damon Lindelof's original script for the Lost season premiere...
...it's not quite a picnic on the lovely shores of Hawai'i, but we hope this tides you over until our Network Premiere on September 21st!
LOCKE
You're lighter. I can belay you down and bring you back up just as easy. Shaft may be narrower down there, too.

You left out the part where you just wanna see if I'm gonna be eaten by something.
And that's all we can show you for now!
Thanks for getting Lost with us!
Guess the locals get to see the first few episodes before the rest of us, any chance of them recording it and uploading....LOL

Correct. It's just that if you are one of those folks that likes to download or tape it, and then re-watch it to analyse it, those are the most pivotal moments.

such a good show
but folks lets here be honest, people would have had condoms packed in their luggage, they would have found them, so where's the shagging!!!
SPOILER!!!!
Anyone else notice in the second episode of season 2, Adrift, that the "shark" had a symbol printed on it's tail? When Sawyer is about to go for the larger bit of raf there's an underwater cam shot of the shark and you see it as it swims past. I checked again and it's the same symbol the guy in the bunker wears on his shirt!
As for the "others" Jin pointed out at the end of the ep., I think they're survivors of the same plane crash... I don't think they're actually the "others" that the crazy french lady was speaking of.

That guy creeps me out. Did you see how many lines on the wall there were? He's been down there for a while! I wonder who this "Him" he's waiting is as well..... It looked like maybe he's expecting a superior or someone to say he can go home.
Here we go.. I got a screenshot of the shark's tail with the mark on it. :)

Nice work on noticing that detail on the shark's tail. Some +rep coming your way. It's little things like that that add to the mystery of the show.
Speaking of that symbol. It's a slightly altered Feng Shui "compass" (see image below). The only thing they've changed is they've put a large S in the center. Now, here's my theory on it all. Feng Shui is a Japanese approach to architectural art, particularly insofar as it referrs to interior design. Think about those two words - interior design. Hmmmmm. Genetic manipulation, perhaps?
In keeping with this theory, I think Desmond was a scientist ("almost a doctor", hehe) with this corporation that was tinkering with DNA mutation. Either a virus got out, or both he and the company thought a virus got out (maybe one did, maybe one didn't and he's under the delusion one did) and he's the last hold out in the quarantine bunker thinking he's the last living soul on earth (remember his cryptic question to Locke about Sydney and LA still being "there"?). The computer - which is an old Commodore 64, by the way, controls some sort of self destruct mechanism that was activated upon lockdown. So long as he is alive to reset it, it doesn't go off.
Again, this is just my theory and could end up being little more than bullshit as the story plays out.
Oh yeah. Here's the Feng Shui Compass.
I'm with you on the self destruct thing. He seemed pretty panichy about that whole situation. It's wierd that he enters in (or gets Locke to enter in) the "cursed" numbers too, I said to astro I think maybe that's his station number, which is why it was written on the side of the hatch.
The virus theory sounds pretty good too since he asked how many people had gotten sick and the whole Quarantine thingy on the hatch. I say he's probably lost contact with whoever he was working for and just keeps on putting in his station number every 180 minutes b/c he thinks everyone else is dead. An experiment gone wrong? I'd say so. :)
What did one snowman say to the other snowman?
Do you smell carrots?
Have an ice day?
Something interesting I found on a LOST forum:
"Didn't Hurley use that joke in Season 1?"
"So perhaps Hurley is the next to be chosen to be the caretaker? Maybe the guy in the mental institute was the caretaker prior to Desmond, and he kept repeating the numbers because he was led to the island, took over the caretaker position from someone else, and went crazy from both the solitude and having to type in the numbers every so often. The numbers then draw the next person in (they used to be broadcasted, until the French Woman changed it), they find the hatch with the numbers imprinted on it, open it up, unwittingly relieve the prior caretaker, and the old caretaker gets released to go rope in the next one by imprinting both the numbers and the passcode on them."
Fitty
05-10-2005, 09:55 PM
I remember the joke, cos it was lame as, can't remember the episode. Hurley's answer was "Freeze!". Also, the clock reset to 108, which is strange, but it's also the amount Hurley won in the lotto and the sum of all the mysterious numbers - 4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42 = 108. I don't know what to make of it all, it's probably just useless crap the producers put in there to keep us guessing, but the upshot of it is, I think Hurley is somehow involved with this Desmond fella.

This hurts. I just saw EP 3 of season 2 and I'm dying to discuss what was a monster episode, but I think it's going to take the folks here a day at least to torrent the file and watch it.
For once they kept the flashbacks to a bare minimum and moved the story forward by a few leaps. I think they unveiled more info in this one episode than they did all of last season.
I won't spoil it for you, but if you haven't seen it yet, please pay extra special attention to the movie that Jack and Locke are told to watch by Desmond. It explains so much, and yet, I never quite picked up on whatever explanation it carried as to why the counter had to constantly be reset. What would happen?
Sorry folks if I've already blabbered too much already. I'll shut up now.

I don't have to download Lost as it's shown locally on TV, but for Battlestar Galactica, which isn't, I use Bittorrent (http://www.bittorrent.com/) (get a good front end GUI like Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) or ABC (http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/) though) and use these sites as standbys from which to obtain the download torrents.
Torrent Spy (http://www.torrentspy.com/)
Torrent Reactor (http://www.torrentreactor.net)
and Seedler (http://www.seedler.org)
You have to register with them but it's free and none of them mind if you supply them with a Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail address, and none of them require you to validate after registering.
Generally, one or all three of the above sites will have a torrent for the each episode up and running inside of a day of airing. Plus, you can easily find individual or one big honking torrent for all of season 1's episodes.
As for watching. I generally watch the Battlestar episodes on the computer. I can't be bothered going through a conversion process to burn them to DVD or VCD. For one thing the files are generally AVI's that have been Divex'ed or XviD'ed and converting them (using something like the free yet powerful Tsunami MPEG Encoder (http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html)) can be dodgy, with the audio often either not rendering at all or rendering hopelessly out of sync.

According to the orientation film Desmond tells Jack and Lock to watch, the island was (or is still) used as a giant laboratory by the mysterious DeGroot Foundation, helmed by a mysterious patriarch shown only faintly and fleetingly in the film. Apparently the island was selected due to its electromagentic "properties" and was home to scientists, physicists and mathematicians who were keen on carrying out biological, electromagnetic and parapsychology experiments.
This, in and of itself, explains alot. It's no coincidence that the when the film's narrator was talking about the various experiments, that when he mentioned "biology" the film showed a clip of two polar bears fighting.
It would also explain why the still mysterious "others" were so keen on kidnapping Walt, giving his apparent heightened psycho-kinetic ability, although it's unclear how they would be aware of this given that his own Dad doesn't appear to have cottoned on.
Desmond claims he was sailing round the world when his ship ran aground on the island, where he was rescued by the DeGroot Foundation's original occupant of the station (which is number 3, BTW - which means there's at least two more of these underground bunkers out there). He explained his mission to Desmond and recruited him into taking turns punching in the code to reset the countdown clock, only to later die leaving Desmond alone to carry out the function.
I never clued in as to why the countdown clock had to be reset, nor what would happen if this failed. If anybody manages to catch this info upon watching the episode, please post it here.
As for the others that have captured Sawyer, Michael and Jin, what do you think? Are they indeed the survivors from the rear end of the plane that broke off before impact (as Michelle Rodriguez's character claimed) or something more sinister?

Right on the first count, and possibly on the second. The project's actual title was The Swan, hence the large S in the center of the logo, but the whole thing was definitely bankrolled by this DeGroot fellow.

I was thinking about the fact that the bunker is underground too, coz when you watch the film, the scientist guy has a model which shows it as a white dome above the ground.
Also, when you see the inside, the ceiling looks like it's made of some opaque stuff with a sort of greenish light coming through. Maybe the bunker was originally above the ground?

Haggis I get the hint (if that's what it is :D) but when you go there (as I can now 'cos it's not busy) it just shows you two polar bears and a red dot.
I can't wait for the next episode. You seen it yet?
Two polar bears and a red dot? What site are you looking at?
Episode 4 of season 2 aired tonight. Nowhere near as forward moving as the last episode, but still good nonetheless. A little more exploration of the bunker. A whole side storyline dealing with Hurley's issues with being put in charge of overseeing the bunker's food stocks. And more on Michael, Jin and Sawyer's capture by the mysterious folk who, it appears more and more, are actually the survivors of the back end of the plane that broke off.
Oh yeah, there's another bunker (or some such underground concrete structure), which they revealed quite casually in the latter sub-plot.
I don't want to tell much more. I've already been deliberately superficial with the episode so as not to ruin it for those who haven't seen it.
Also got to see the preview for next week's episode. Based on that, plus the page from the script of episode 6 that can be called up from that web page (see previous post), I have a feeling they will be introducing a zombie element to it all.

You know that rep message you sent? Well if you put www. in front of it and paste it into your browser you get the polar bears with the red dot.
Just about to convert and burn the new episode. :woot:

Yeah. I finally clued in and tried that. Eh.....
After rewatching the orientation film a few times, and seeing how they mentioned that the Degroots were following the research pioneered by B.F. Skinner, I now think this whole island is one big experiment in social engineering. Sort of akin to the survivors being monkeys in a lab. I think Jack was right when he claimed that nothing would happen if the countdown clock wasn't reset. It's all one big head fuck.
The appearance of a rival band of survivors from the tail section now sets up a Lord of the Flies type scenario.
Much was made early on in the series about the rivalry between light and dark, good vs evil.
Perchance this is all part of the experiment? Put two groups of people on an island and see what happens?
My prediction. The writers will eventually have Charlie take a turn manning the computer resetting the countdown clock. Only Charlie will by then be into the heroin found on the smugglers plane, and will pass out or doze off, thus allowing the clock to tick down to zero.

Definitely - eventually they have to make the clock tick down to zero and Charlie is the prime character to make it happen.
The rest of what you say is quite plausible too. I'm pretty sure that bunker is an experiement in faith, to see how long someone will wait around and enter a code every couple of hours after being told catastrophic events will happen if they don't do it. The quarantine sign in the doorway is there to squash any doubts and thoughts of escape. The "induction video" looks really dodgy too, there's so much that's just not right about it...
And finally, if not entering the code would really result in the end of the world, they have a computer there, why not enter a script of some sort to enter the code automatically? And why would the they abandon it, leaving someone there for so long when they know if anything happens to him, everyone is fucked?

Some interesting reading for those unfamiliar with the research of BF Skinner (referenced in the Darva Initiative's orientation film). Taken from http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/skinner.html
B. F. Skinner’s entire system is based on operant conditioning. The organism is in the process of “operating” on the environment, which in ordinary terms means it is bouncing around it world, doing what it does. During this “operating,” the organism encounters a special kind of stimulus, called a reinforcing stimulus, or simply a reinforcer. This special stimulus has the effect of increasing the operant -- that is, the behavior occurring just before the reinforcer. This is operant conditioning: “the behavior is followed by a consequence, and the nature of the consequence modifies the organisms tendency to repeat the behavior in the future.”
Imagine a rat in a cage. This is a special cage (called, in fact, a “Skinner box”) that has a bar or pedal on one wall that, when pressed, causes a little mechanism to release a foot pellet into the cage. The rat is bouncing around the cage, doing whatever it is rats do, when he accidentally presses the bar and -- hey, presto! -- a food pellet falls into the cage! The operant is the behavior just prior to the reinforcer, which is the food pellet, of course. In no time at all, the rat is furiously peddling away at the bar, hoarding his pile of pellets in the corner of the cage.
A behavior followed by a reinforcing stimulus results in an increased probability of that behavior occurring in the future.
What if you don’t give the rat any more pellets? Apparently, he’s no fool, and after a few futile attempts, he stops his bar-pressing behavior. This is called extinction of the operant behavior.
A behavior no longer followed by the reinforcing stimulus results in a decreased probability of that behavior occurring in the future.
Now, if you were to turn the pellet machine back on, so that pressing the bar again provides the rat with pellets, the behavior of bar-pushing will “pop” right back into existence, much more quickly than it took for the rat to learn the behavior the first time. This is because the return of the reinforcer takes place in the context of a reinforcement history that goes all the way back to the very first time the rat was reinforced for pushing on the bar!
Schedules of reinforcement
Skinner likes to tell about how he “accidentally -- i.e. operantly -- came across his various discoveries. For example, he talks about running low on food pellets in the middle of a study. Now, these were the days before “Purina rat chow” and the like, so Skinner had to make his own rat pellets, a slow and tedious task. So he decided to reduce the number of reinforcements he gave his rats for whatever behavior he was trying to condition, and, lo and behold, the rats kept up their operant behaviors, and at a stable rate, no less. This is how Skinner discovered schedules of reinforcement!
Continuous reinforcement is the original scenario: Every time that the rat does the behavior (such as pedal-pushing), he gets a rat goodie.
The fixed ratio schedule was the first one Skinner discovered: If the rat presses the pedal three times, say, he gets a goodie. Or five times. Or twenty times. Or “x” times. There is a fixed ratio between behaviors and reinforcers: 3 to 1, 5 to 1, 20 to 1, etc. This is a little like “piece rate” in the clothing manufacturing industry: You get paid so much for so many shirts.
The fixed interval schedule uses a timing device of some sort. If the rat presses the bar at least once during a particular stretch of time (say 20 seconds), then he gets a goodie. If he fails to do so, he doesn’t get a goodie. But even if he hits that bar a hundred times during that 20 seconds, he still only gets one goodie! One strange thing that happens is that the rats tend to “pace” themselves: They slow down the rate of their behavior right after the reinforcer, and speed up when the time for it gets close.
Skinner also looked at variable sche
